Andrew Johnson's presidency began in the shadow of Lincoln's legacy and the monumental task of Reconstruction. The war had ended, but the wounds it had inflicted were deep and raw. The South lay in ruins, its economy shattered, its social fabric torn apart. The question of how to bring the Southern states back into the Union, and how to ensure the rights of newly freed African Americans, would dominate Johnson's presidency. The road ahead would be exceedingly difficult.
