Happy New Year 2022 ! Last year I watched 314 movies including documentaries, plays, standup specials, and tv series. Most were good, some were great, and some I could have done without. Death hadn't shook me like this ever before. I woke up to the news that Norm Macdonald has died after nine year long battle with cancer. He has talked about death, meaning of life, and joked about death so much that is seems unfair not to take his passing in the same manner. He lived for comedy. He was great at it. In fact he was the funniest comedian of all time. Maybe not the most famous, maybe not the most successful, but definitely the funniest. His book 'Based on a True Story' is a work of creative genius and the amount of profound ideas he's shared throughout his career takes him a grade above your standard "comedians". He was to me, as for many other, a great source of joy and a master who showed with example how to look at life. And also, how not to look about life. He was a great gambler and today finally the house have won. With all naivety I actually thought I'd meet him someday. Well, goodbye Norm. I love you.

I recently watched and read some pieces of art that were surprisingly similar in themes they dealt with. The novel Atonement, the film The Straight Story, and the short story बखतेले आमा मार्यो, they all talk about the ideas of growing old and living with some unresolved issues. Today let's talk about making amends. What it means to make peace with things you can't resolve. How ageing, death, and the guilt of having to survive with death all around changes people.

Burden of dreams is a documentary that follows the making up process of Fitzcarraldo, a 1982 film about a would-be rubber baron Brian Sweeney Fitzgerald, an Irishman known in Peru as Fitzcarraldo, who is determined to transport a steamship over a steep hill to access a rich rubber territory in the Amazon Basin. It was directed by Werner Herzog and is considered one of the most troubled production of all time. Like the story of the lead character Fitzcarraldo, this saga of making a movie against all odds has a bitter sweet ending as well.

I recently saw Bo Burnham record himself turning 30. It was one of the most eye opening moment from his special. To be aware that you're constantly changing, ageing each year, crawling towards the inevitable. As Heraclitus mentioned “No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it’s not the same river and he’s not the same man” I wanted capture/record the person I was at this time. I have been very lucky with life. This episode is my contemplation on mortality and denial to the fact that I am no longer 21.
