In her poem “Deliverance” about her son’s birth she writes “What is the word for when the light leaves the body?/What is the word for when it/at last, returns?” Through poems that are as unforgettably beautiful as they are accessible, Kate Bear proves herself to truly be an exemplary voice in modern poetry. Title: Finna: Poems Author: Nate Marshall Narrator: Nate Marshall Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 1 hour 36 minutes Release date: August 11, 2020 Genres: Poetry Publisher's Summary: Sharp, lyrical poems celebrating the Black vernacular—its influence on pop culture, its necessity for familial survival, its rite in storytelling and in creating the safety found only within its intimacy “Terrific . . . illuminates life in this country in a strikingly original way.”—Ron Charles, The Washington Post NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY NPR • The New York Public Library • Tordotcom Definition of finna, created by the author: fin·na /ˈfinə/ contraction: (1) going to; intending to [rooted in African American Vernacular English] (2) eye dialect spelling of “fixing to” (3) Black possibility; Black futurity; Blackness as tomorrow These poems consider the brevity and disposability of Black lives and other oppressed people in our current era of emboldened white supremacy, and the use of the Black vernacular in America’s vast reserve of racial and gendered epithets. Finna explores the erasure of peoples in the American narrative; asks how gendered language can provoke violence; and finally, how the Black vernacular, expands our notions of possibility, giving us a new language of hope: nothing about our people is romantic & it shouldn’t be. our people deserve poetry without meter. we deserve our own jagged rhythm & our own uneven walk towards sun. you make happening happen. we happen to love. this is our greatest action.

Selected Poems by Denise Riley
Please visit https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/1/audiobook/390606 to listen full audiobooks. Title: Selected Poems Author: Denise Riley Narrator: Denise Riley Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 3 hours 46 minutes Release date: October 3, 2019 Genres: Poetry Publisher's Summary: Denise Riley has pursued her singular path with a determined disregard for poetic fashion: a poet of immense musical gifts and formal skill, as happy in traditional forms as experimental, her non-alignment with any ‘tribe’ has led to a rich and various poetry that, while densely allusive and intellectually uncompromising, remains emotionally open towards the reader at the most profound level. Say Something Back, her lyric meditation on bereavement, won Riley universal acclaim – and a wide and long-deserved readership. Her Selected Poems offers a generous overview of a working life which has taken in philosophy, feminism, literary history, song and aphorism – and within which the old certainties are interrogated and shaken at every turn. Hers is a voice through which we come to better understand one another, the meaning of our time here, and the nature of human communication itself. ‘Wide-ranging, sometimes anguished, her poems are fascinating and often beautiful, and certainly more than usually thought-provoking.’ - Guardian

Title: Walking Backwards: Poems 1966-2016 Author: John Koethe Narrator: John Koethe Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 2 hours 10 minutes Release date: September 10, 2019 Genres: Poetry Publisher's Summary: Collected poems from America’s searching and thoughtful philosopher-poet. ...There’s something Comforting about rituals renewed, even adolescents’ pipe dreams: They’ll find out soon enough, and meanwhile find their places In the eternal scenery, less auguries or cautionary tales Than parts of an unchanging whole, as ripe for contemplation As a planisphere or the clouds: the vexed destinies, the shared life, The sempiternal spectacle of someone preaching to the choir While walking backwards in the moment on a warm spring afternoon. John Koethe’s poems—always dynamic and in process, never static or complete—luxuriate in the questions that punctuate the most humdrum of routines, rendering a robust portrait of an individual: complicated, quotidian, and resounding with truth. Gathering for the first time his impressive and award-winning body of work, published between 1966 and 2016, Walking Backwards introduces this gifted poet to a new, wider audience.

Like: Poems by A. E. Stallings
Please visit https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/1/audiobook/369934 to listen full audiobooks. Title: Like: Poems Author: A. E. Stallings Narrator: A. E. Stallings Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 2 hours 3 minutes Release date: August 6, 2019 Genres: Poetry Publisher's Summary: A Finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in Poetry. A stunning new collection by the award-winning young poet and translator. Like, that currency of social media, is a little word with infinite potential; it can be nearly any part of speech. Without it, there is no simile, that engine of the lyric poem, the lyre’s note in the epic. A poem can hardly exist otherwise. In this new collection, her most ambitious to date, A. E. Stallings continues her archeology of the domestic, her odyssey through myth and motherhood in received and invented forms, from sonnets to syllabics. Stallings also eschews the poetry volume’s conventional sections for the arbitrary order of the alphabet. Contemporary Athens itself, a place never dull during the economic and migration crises of recent years, shakes off the dust of history and emerges as a vibrant character. Known for her wry and musical lyric poems, Stallings here explores her themes in greater depth, including the bravura performance Lost and Found, a meditation in ottava rima on a parent’s sublunary dance with daily-ness and time, set in the moon’s Valley of Lost Things.

Far from heroic, Jason is the typical everyman. He is given to intense bouts of nervousness and anxiety, and is saved on more than one occasion by the sorceress Medea, Jason's love interest, and his band of heroes: Castor and Pollux, Heracles, the musician Orpheus and the flying brothers Zetes and Calais. They encounter clashing rocks at the Bosphorus; an all-female parliament at Lemnos, where the women have slaughtered the men; harpies who plague the prophet Phineas; King Amycus, a champion boxer; an army of men who spring from the ground; and, of course, the never-sleeping dragon who guards the Golden Fleece. Often compared with Homer's Iliad and Odyssey, Jason and the Argonauts is the only poem from the Hellenistic period and was hugely influential on later literature, especially the Roman poetry of Virgil and Ovid.

La Vita Nuova by Dante

Title: La Vita Nuova Author: Dante Narrator: Jonathan Keeble Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 2 hours 23 minutes Release date: February 5, 2019 Genres: Poetry Publisher's Summary: Written in alternating prose and poetry, La Vita Nuova (The New Life) is a profound reflection on the nature of love, devoted to Dante's muse Beatrice. Following Beatrice's death in 1290, Dante became obsessed with the young Florentine woman, whom he only ever knew from a distance. He believed his love for her was a form of divine love, and saw her as an image of salvation itself - a theme that is later explored in his masterpiece The Divine Comedy, where she guides him through heaven. La Vita Nuova gives a fascinating glimpse into the poet's innermost feelings - his joy, his guilt and his grief - and remains one of the greatest works of Christian autobiography. **Contact Customer Service for Additional Content**

The Poetry Of William Cowper by William Cowper

Title: The Poetry Of William Cowper Author: William Cowper Narrator: Jake Urry, Gideon Wagner, Ghizela Rowe Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 0 hours 58 minutes Release date: January 10, 2019 Genres: Poetry Publisher's Summary: William Cowper was born 26th November 1731 in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire. Traumatically he and his brother, John, were the only survivors, out of seven, to survive infancy. His mother died when he was six.His education, after several temporary schools, was stabilised at Westminster school. Here he established several life-long friendships and a dedication to Latin. Upon leaving he was articled to a solicitor in London and spent almost a decade training in Law. In 1763 he was offered a Clerkship of Journals in the House of Lords. With the examinations approaching Cowper had a mental breakdown. He tried to commit suicide three times and a period of depression and insanity seemed to settle on him. The end of this unhappy period saw him find refuge in evangelical Christianity, becoming the inspiration behind his much-loved hymns. This led to a collaboration with John Newton in writing 'Olney Hymns'.However dark forces were about to overwhelm Cowper. In 1773, he experienced a devastating attack of insanity, believing that he was eternally condemned to hell, and that God was instructing him to make a sacrifice of his own life. With great care and devotion his friend, Mary Unwin, nursed him back to health. In 1781 Cowper had the good fortune to meet a widow, Lady Austen, who inspired a new bout of poetry writing including what some have considered his most substantial work, 'The Task'.In 1786 he began his translations from the Greek into blank verse of Homer's 'The Iliad' and 'The Odyssey'. These translations, published in 1791, were the most significant since those of Alexander Pope earlier in the century.Mary Unwin died in 1796, plunging Cowper into a gloom from which he never fully recovered though he did continue to write.William Cowper was seized with dropsy and died on 25th April 1800.

Title: Selected Milk (Added from Reconstituted Milk Powder Whole Pasteurized Homogenized) Author: Jose Luis Ducid, Alfonso Camarero Narrator: Silvana Sieiro, Richard Hotz Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 0 hours 57 minutes Release date: December 5, 2018 Ratings: Ratings of Book: 5 of Total 1 Ratings of Narrator: 5 of Total 1 Genres: Poetry Publisher's Summary: A twenty-something Ducid from the late 90's, without pasteurization, serves us - sells us - poems with his curdling, his acidic point of sarcasm, and well sprinkled with the powder of realism. The vía crucis, or say: the milky way of this book takes place in non-bucolic spaces and without much meringue. Texts in which people die vomiting custard. Indi-blurp poems - with gestures. Ducid is a skeptical character in the supermarket of life. And he appears a bizarre storyteller. (Estíbaliz Espinosa, prologue to the Galician edition of 'Selected Milk...", 2012) "Selected Milk (Added from Reconstituted Milk Powder Whole Pasteurized Homogenized)", is in the form of a manual for promoters of milk cartons in supermarkets. Meanwhile, the poems are about the flashes of life of a potential client who does not meet the conditions of a milk carton buyer. The translation from the Spanish was lovingly made by Jose Andrés Novio. Each poem has a dedicated soundtrack made by Alfonso Camarero

Title: The Female Poets of the Nineteenth Century - Volume 1 Author: Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Charlotte Bronte, George Eliot Narrator: Ghizela Rowe, Richard Mitchley, Eve Karpf Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 1 hour 45 minutes Release date: August 1, 2018 Genres: Poetry Publisher's Summary: For much of history women have been seen rather than heard. Their thoughts, their views have lain too long in the shadows of our culture. Whilst this traditional view has some merit it is not entirely accurate. Here, gathered together in these volumes, we can, through their words, experience their lives; we can hear their voices, their thoughts, joys, loves and losses. For the Female Poet there was always the confining hand of men to instruct that their time was perhaps spent more productively elsewhere. These lines, these gilded verses often protest otherwise. The contribution of women in these earlier centuries is immense and in this series we bring together poets who have created some of the most beautiful and expressive verses ever written. And remember these words, these telling lines, have been written against the grain of society's male bias. With their remembered words these female poets have given us a history that we can all now share. This volume comes to you from Portable Poetry, a specialized imprint from Deadtree Publishing. Our range is large and growing and covers single poets, themes, and many compilations.
