Unfolded Episode 14 — Penuel by Callid Keefe-Perry

Unfolded. It’s not dead, it’s just been in cryosleep. Sorry to stay away so long. We’re hoping to put episodes out more frequently but, honestly, it takes great skill and a lot of free time to make great podcasts (free or not free). So, we don’t feel that bad.

Speaking of great skill, I’d like to welcome a new producer to the show. A longtime homebrewed deacon, Will Houk, joins the team. Will is a husband, father, teacher and very talented musician. Check out his music on bandcamp, and follow him on twitter for sure.

So, anyway, this episode is very special. It’s a beautiful, poetic and evocative short story written and read by HBC’s very own Callid Keefe-Perry! He really needs no introduction, but for those who don’t know, Callid is a grateful husband and father. He is also a member of the Religious Society of Friends and travels in the ministry within and beyond that denomination. He is the author of Way to Water: A Theopoetics Primer, a founding editor of the journal THEOPOETICS, and of course a co-host on the Homebrewed Christianity podcast. Currently his work focuses on the development of a public theology of public education, but he also juggles several side projects related to creative and critical pedagogies for adult religious education. Hello Deacons! Unfolded has returned, and we’re back with a remarkable short story by Lutheran Minister and writer Jake Bouma.
The Mute Monk is a captivating parable that will have you contemplating themes of grace, forgiveness, memory, and fate long after you’ve finished listening.
Jake is an ecclesial junkie, aspiring polymath, and cancer survivor who currently serves as Director of Youth & Family Ministry at Faith Lutheran Church in Des Moines, Iowa. In 2012, Jake was diagnosed with and treated for Hodgkin lymphoma, a journey which is intimately captured in a forthcoming feature-length documentary titled “Let’s Do This: Facing Hodgkin Lymphoma.” During treatment, Jake solicited contributions from distinguished Christian thinkers like Brian McLaren, Carol Howard Merritt, Kester Brewin, and more for a series on his blog titled “Cancer & Theology,” which will is available on Amazon and features exclusive new essays. Unfolded is back from hiatus. We missed you all. We hope you missed us. There is lots of fun stuff coming up in the near future. Here is a taste:

* While we were gone, we spent some time with the Homebrewed Crew down in Asheville and recorded a LIVE Unfolded story at Wild Goose. It was choose your own adventure style and the audience at the event helped write the story. Look for it to be released shortly
* We have some great written pieces in the hopper that were written by some very talented contributors, one of them being HBC’s very own Callid Keefe-Perry.
* Unfolded: Interviews That Reveal – we will begin interviewing our talented contributors to learn about them, and glean greater insights into their creative process

Unfolded Episode 7 – Beelzy’s Lot

Unfolded is back! And this episode is very, very special. Lyle Enright, an MA student in the English department at Loyola University (Chicago), is our guest contributor this week and he does NOT disappoint. In this episode, Lyle weaves us a frenzied tale of misgiving, infuriation and terror that will blow your mind, and Matt does his thing on the 1’s and 2’s crafting some sweet original sounds.
Lyle has written numerous articles on faith, art, and culture for Relief Journal, Catapult* Magazine, and Antler, and will be presenting as part of the scholarship symposium at the NecronomiCon H.P. Lovecraft Festival in Providence, RI this coming August. His fiction has been featured in Relief, Catapult*, Flashes in the Dark, and the anthology The Dark Side of the Womb.

Unfolded: Stories that reveal…is a podcast that attempts to reveal great meaning without, necessarily, committing the error of defining it. You’ll find that this show–created by Matthew Barlow and Jesse Turri–is quite different from the other fantastic podcasts on the HBC network. Every other week, Unfolded will feature original written content from one of the crew members which will be supported by astonishing sound design.
You essentially just have to listen to understand.
This week’s premier episode features a short story that takes place in a supermarket located in a small rural town, where eating chitlins and possum is the norm. Some mighty weird things start to happen in this market and there is a LOT of wine involved.
