The Art and Psychology of Police Interrogation

A police interrogation is a formal questioning of a suspect by law enforcement to obtain evidence that could lead to a prosecution. Interrogations can occur in many settings, including police stations or on the street, and can take place during an arrest, criminal investigation, or after a suspect is in custody.

Police interrogations are often accusatorial and manipulative, and can include:

Confronting the suspect with accusations of guilt

Minimizing the severity of the crime

Providing moral justification for the suspect's actions

Using the Reid technique, which involves methods to detect signs of deception in body language

Threatening consequences

Promising leniency in return for a confession

Denying the suspect their rights

The Fifth Amendment of the United States Constitution protects individuals from self-incrimination and guarantees the right to remain silent. Before questioning, the suspect must be warned of their rights, including:

The right to remain silent
The right to have an attorney present, either retained or appointed
The fact that any statement they make may be used as evidence against them

However, the Supreme Court has stated that police interrogations are "inherently coercive". Despite this, confessions are often trusted and offered as conclusive evidence of guilt, even when made by innocent suspects.

She killed him. Cut him to pieces... and kept him with her for months.
She Murdered and Dismembered a Disabled Man — Then Lived With the Body

🚨 She killed him. Cut him to pieces... and kept him with her for months.
This is the shocking story of Penny Pospisil and the trailer-of-terror that hid a dead man.
🎧 Listen now.
#TrueCrime #PennyPospisil #RVHorror #Podcast

In the summer of 2018, Penny Pospisil was living with her 55-year-old, physically disabled boyfriend, Anthony Mitchell, in an RV village in Sumter County, Florida. 🎧 Months later, neighbors noticed a horrific odor coming from her trailer.

When authorities finally conducted a welfare check in December 2019, they were met with a scene that defied explanation — Anthony’s dismembered, decomposing remains, hidden in the RV shower

Penny claimed self-defense, saying she was a victim of domestic violence but the evidence showed she murdered and dismembered Anthony, then kept his body with her in a moving RV, traveling across counties with no one aware

In March 2023, after pleading guilty to second-degree murder, abuse of a dead body, and grand theft, she received the maximum sentence: life in prison plus consecutive terms

This episode unpacks:

Penny’s twisted justification and chilling actions post-murder

How forensic and neighbor reports as well as bodycam evidence broke the case

The psychological depths of someone who could live with a corpse

Legal proceedings, sentencing, and the unanswered questions about what she was thinking

Content Warning: Graphic descriptions of dismemberment and body concealment. Listener discretion is strongly advised.

In July 2015, a seemingly routine welfare check in Pensacola, Florida turned into a nightmare. Police found three members of the Smith family—Voncile (77), Richard (49), and John (47)—brutally murdered, their bodies buried under piles of clothing and blankets, surrounded in a scene that hinted at dark ritual

The suspect? Donald Wayne Hartung, half‑brother to two of the victims and his estranged mother’s son from a previous marriage. Hartung, who practiced Wicca, claimed he merely cooked them meals—but his DNA on cigarette butts, his motives tied to inheritance, and jailhouse admissions detailing torture and attempted extortion—painted a chilling portrait .

Far from ritual, prosecutors said Hartung killed the family for money—he’d been written out of a $900K estate and stood to inherit only if they were gone. In February 2020, a jury convicted him of three counts of first‑degree murder. He was sentenced to life in prison without parole

In this episode, we examine:

The bizarre crime scene dubbed the "Blue Moon" massacre

Family tension and financial motives behind the killings

Forensic breakthroughs linking Hartung to the scene

His chilling jailhouse bragging and lack of empathy

The trial, verdict, and ongoing ramifications for the community

Content Warning: This episode includes graphic details of violence, family betrayal, and torture. Listener discretion is strongly advised.

SAN ANTONIO San Antonio police have released a 911 dispatch call reporting a Bigfoot sighting.

The audio recording between a dispatcher and the homeless couple lasts more than eight minutes. In it, the primary caller appears sober and deliberate as she describes the beast Nov. 30.

And I know you guys are going to think I m crazy, but I m dead serious, she says on the recording. This big thing was 75 feet away from me, smelled awful, devoured a whole deer carcass, and then took off and screamed, screeched, and took off across the street

I m going to tell you right now, I ve lived in the woods six years. Swear to God, I ve never seen nothing like this. I m 6 feet 3 inches; it s bigger than me, said her 63-year-old husband.

The couple claims the creature walked upright as it carried the deer carcass off into the woods.

Police reports indicate dispatchers sent an officer by the location that night, but he found no sign of the couple or the beast.

The callers said they were living in a tent in the woods in northwest San Antonio, near the intersection of Highway 151 and Loop 1604. The area has acres of wooded terrain sur

On Halloween night 2014, 22-year-old Chelsea Bruck disappeared after attending a costume party in Frenchtown Township, Michigan. She was last seen in a Poison Ivy outfit. Months later, her body was discovered in a wooded area, sparking questions that cut deeper than any costume.

In January 2020, Sasha Krause, a 27-year-old Mennonite Sunday school teacher, disappeared from Farmington, New Mexico. Her body was found a month later, face down in a remote Arizona forest clearing—hands bound and a fatal gunshot wound to the head.

Investigators traced her abduction to Mark Gooch, a U.S. Air Force airman stationed at Luke AFB. Cell phone data, surveillance footage, and financial records showed he drove over 400 miles to abduct her, then returned to Arizona, cleaned his car, and deleted his phone’s location data.

Gooch—who grew up Mennonite but rejected the faith—claimed he went searching for spiritual connection but denied any crime. Prosecutors said he acted out of resentment toward the Mennonite community. In October 2021, he was convicted of kidnapping and first-degree murder. In January 2022, he was sentenced to life in prison without parole

This episode explores:

The motives and mental state behind targeting an innocent teacher

How forensic technology tied him to the crime

The trial’s shocking revelations and courtroom testimony

The Mennonite community’s response—some prayed for him even after conviction

What this case says about faith, resentment, and violent crime

True Crime Podcast 2025
Full Police Interrogations, 911 Calls, and True Crime Investigations - True Crime Podcast 2025
