Culture, Traditions and Legacy
Sharing this conversation from several years ago was like taking a gentle walk down memory lane with my dear friend Cornelia Bailey. It stirred up so many moments we’ve shared over the years — long talks about culture, tradition, and the meaning of legacy. But this time felt different. This one reached deeper.
Watching culture come alive before my eyes — standing beside Cornelia and her family as they harvested whelks — was something truly special. It wasn’t just about the shells or the sea; it was about witnessing a living tradition, one that carries the heartbeat of generations.
Take a listen, and then browse through the photos below. You’ll see it — the beauty, the rhythm, the strength of Sapelo’s traditions — all shining through every image.
Check out this video about harvesting whelks.

You'll find the Knobbed Whelk along the shores on Sapelo

Up on the North end of Sapelo island gathering whelks with the buckets in hand.

Sapelo's Knobbed Whelk ready to boil

Fall Leaf Peeping Near and Far

Today, if you're like me, you  can feel it in the air… fall is finally here! It's Fall Leaf Peeping near and far and it's time for you to start planning.

The temperatures are cooling, the air feels crisp, and those first hints of gold, crimson, and fiery orange are starting to paint the treetops. For me, autumn isn’t just a season—it’s a vibe. It’s that cozy sweater, the first sip of hot cider, the sound of leaves crunching under your boots… and yes, it’s prime time for one of my favorite seasonal adventures: fall leaf peeping near and far!

Brandywine falls in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park

Why We Love Autumn
Now, sure, we all love the brilliant colors, but fall brings so much more:
-That extra excuse for weekend getaways
-Football games, pumpkin patches, and cozy cabins
-And, let's not forget the festivals - apple cider, pumpkin spice everything, and those little local treasures you can't find any other time of year

And here’s a little fall trivia for you: Did you know that the brightest, most vibrant leaf colors happen when we have warm sunny days and cool crisp nights? That’s nature working double-time for our Instagram feeds!

Where to Leaf Peep + Do More
Now, if you’re looking for the perfect places to soak in the colors and enjoy a little extra fun along the way, I’ve got several destinations you need on your radar this fall.

Shenandoah County, Virginia
Let’s start with Shenandoah County, where you can go from mild to wild:

Meems Bottom Covered Bridge – Built in the 1890s, this 204-foot charmer is Virginia’s longest covered bridge still open to traffic. Snap a photo here—it’s picture-perfect in fall.
Shenvalee Golf Resort – Play 18 holes while surrounded by mountain views and rolling waves of color.
Murray’s Fly Shop – Learn fly fishing from the experts, or book a guided tour on Shenandoah’s peaceful waterways.
Woodstock Tower – Built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1935, climb to the top and you’ll see all seven bends of the Shenandoah River, with views stretching across the valley.”

Branson, Missouri
Next up, Branson—a small town with big fall energy.

Start at Table Rock Lake: 750 miles of shoreline with fiery reflections of autumn leaves—and yes, the water stays warm enough for a swim!
Branson’s Fall Fest: Scavenger hunts, apple cider demos, shopping, and Instagram-ready selfie spots.
Don’t miss Silver Dollar City’s Harvest Festival (Sept. 12–Oct. 26): Think Hallmark movie set meets theme park, complete with pumpkin carving, spiced treats, and tens of thousands of pumpkins!”

Gatlinburg & The Smokies, Tennessee
Heading south to the Smoky Mountains—a fall classic. Peak colors hit mid-October to early November, and you’ve got options:

Drive Kuwohi Road or the Blue Ridge Parkway for sweeping vistas.
Explore Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail for historic cabins and quiet forests.
Hike to Alum Cave or Charlie’s Bunion for jaw-dropping views.
And if you love festivals, you’ll want to check out Dollywood’s Harvest Festival (Sept. 12–Oct. 27) and Anakeesta’s Bear-Varian Fall Festival—fall fun meets mountain magic.”

Blairsville, Georgia
Closer to home, Blairsville is the North Georgia gem you’ve been missing.

Hike up Brasstown Bald, Georgia’s highest peak, for 360-degree views across four states.
Wander through Vogel State Park for waterfall trails and serene lake reflections.
Downtown Blairsville brings small-town charm with shops, wineries, craft beer, and chocolate shops circling a historic courthouse.

Egypt- Ancient History
Pharaohs, Queens and Kings
Hello, hello, hello and welcome aboard travel with annita & friends.  Today, I’m taking you on a journey of Egypt ancient history - pharaohs queens and kings. We're going along one of the most legendary rivers in the world—the Nile. I recently sailed with AmaWaterways from Cairo down to Luxor and Aswan, retracing routes that highlight Egypt's ancient history of pharaohs, queens, and conquerors once traveled.

Along the way, I stood before the great pyramids of Giza, wandered through ancient temples etched with stories of gods and kings, and uncovered the fascinating lives of Egypt’s powerful queens—women like Hatshepsut and Nefertari, who shaped the destiny of empires.

This isn’t just a cruise—it’s time travel. Imagine gliding past palm-lined shores, watching the desert meet the river, while every stop reveals another layer of history thousands of years old.

So settle in—as I share my journey with AmaWaterways starting in Cairo and exploring Luxor and Aswan — pyramids, temples, and the powerful queens who ruled Egypt — and I’ll be joined by Randa Abdelwahav the Egyptologist on my Amawaterways cruise, she brings these stories into focus. Together, we’ll explore the mysteries, the monuments, and the magic of one of the world’s greatest civilizations.”

I’ve always wanted to visit Egypt and my first trip was back in 1980 when I backpacked around the country visiting temples, pyramids and staying with families as my travel buddies and I journeyed from small city to another small village.  Somehow people in the villages knew Americans are traveling through the area.  Children ran greeting us and inviting us to come and visit. It was very warm and engaging.  The people were fascinated with us as we were with them and they wanted us to enjoy tea with them. Women gave their babies for us to hold, considering it an honor for us to hold them.

With visits to Luxor for valley of the kings, aswan for the great temples…. It was a very memorable trip and one that has remained with me for years endears. You can imagine my excitement when I was invited to sail along the nile with Amawaterways.

Starting with two days in Cairo and a stay at the St. Regis.  While in Cairo I visited the Egyptian Museum and King Tut’s treasures.  We visited the Alabaster Mosque and Saladin’s citadel.  The Grand Egyptian Museum had a soft opening while there and it was amazing to have a chance to have a first view of the artifacts spectacularly exhibited and displayed.  This new museum is an exciting addition to your Egypt itinerary.

Once onboard our ship, we started sailing the Nile. I couldn’t wait to get back to the Valley of the Kings where you can visit King Tuts tomb & Seti I Tomb, the temple of Hatshepsut while in Luxor.  Heading on to Edfu we visited the temple of Horus the Falcom headed god,and Karnak Temple. My favorite spot in Egypt is Aswan where you’ll find Abu Simbel World Heritage site… the temple and of Ramsey II and Nefertari.

Such a surreal experience, walking the same paths of the pharos and sailing the same waters where Cleopatra sailed.  Amazing. While cruising, I sat down with Egyptologist Randa Abdelwahav for a long chat. We talked about Egyptian culture and history … her fascinating life and extraordinary knowledge made learning more about Egypt during the trip very easy.  I wanted to know more about her and how she chose to become an egyptologists.

Take a listen to her story. And, make sure to listen on when the show ends. I share  a few more minutes of my conversation with Randa. She's amazing.

Take a look at some photos.

River Cruising - It’s your next journey on the water
I hope you’re ready and excited today because, we’re going to set sail and go river cruising with AmaWaterways through the waterways around the world. Those small rivers and waterways where you’ll find history, culture, traditions and fascinating stories of the people who call them home.

Today, we’re taking a smooth turn off the open ocean and into the winding waters of Europe, the U.S., and beyond—welcome to the world of river cruising. I’m often asked…. What’s a river cruise and why do I hear so many people talking about them.  What makes them different from sailing the deep blue sea?  I'll share my time river cruising with Amawaterways.

Well If you’ve ever wondered what sets a river cruise apart from those big ocean liners, sit tight—because it’s a very different experience… that’s different in all the right ways, in a good way, a way that will have you choosing river causing for your next big adventures.

Intimate Ships
– Typically 100–200 passengers max. Which means More personal service, less crowds and more opportunities to have your own space or meet new people.  Ship size does matter. River cruise ships are intimate—and with just 100 to 200 passengers. That means no long lines, no massive crowds on excursions, events on the ship, entertainment, dinner reservations….. all those things that can cause you to “wait your turn” are not there and with some large oceanliners with passenger capacity at 6000 plus passengers - more people - means more crowds, more waiting.  Also, those large ships can leave you  feeling like you’re in a floating theme park.

Scenic Cruising All Day
– You’re rarely staring at open water—how about castles, vineyards, sleepy villages drift by constantly or open fields of flowers - You’re always close to shore, which means one big plus: the view never stops changing. And —you don’t need binoculars to enjoy the scenery, it’s right outside your window - large windows in your stateroom means you get a room with a view.  It’s important to note - Most of the river cruise ships may not have balconies due to the more slimmer ship configuration to get through small waterways and lock systems - especially in Europe.  However their huge upper decks mean wide-open views and places to sit and watch the world go by. .
Daily Port Stops
– Rivers are lined with towns and cities. You dock in the heart of town—no tenders, no port shuttles. Just get off and go. Take a walk around the city on your own or join a tour or excursion.  You stop every day. River cruising is all about immersing yourself in the destination. You dock right in the center of town—walk off the boat, and you’re in the action. This also means river cruise itineraries are a much better fit for anyone needed more accessible travel  - travelers with limited mobility will find this is a much easier way to enjoy traveling the world.
Included Excursions
– And here's another bonus: many river cruises include excursions, wine, beer, and Wi-Fi in the fare. It's more of an all-in-one experience than most ocean cruises. Most river cruises offer included daily guided tours, often culturally immersive.
Less Motion = No Seasickness
– I’m sure you’ve heard the saying - “The Motion of the ocean!” Well there is truth to that. I’ve been on ocean liners where the sea is rocky and you’re balancing yourself as you walk around the ship. Rivers are calm. You’re not likely to feel much movement at all. It’s very rare to find yourself with rough waters.
Cultural Focus
– My most favorite part of river cruising is the opportunity to experience and enjoy local food, music, lectures, and activities often reflect the region you’re sailing. With stops in many of the small towns and villages,

Destination:  Steelpan Music
Caribbean and New Orleans
Glad you're here for a replay of this musical and cultural show.  Listen in to learn about the history of steel pan and how music in the Caribbean and in New Orleans have connections that bind us through history, people and places.

Here are photos from the Steelpan In The Courtyard event.

Here's a transcript of the show:

Hello, hello—and welcome to the show. I’m Annita, and today, we’re taking a journey through rhythm, rebellion, resourcefulness and creation. This is the story of the steel pan—the only acoustic instrument invented in the 20th century.

And where did it all begin? The twin-island nation of Trinidad and Tobago, where creativity and resistance collided to create a sound that now resonates across the world.

Let’s rewind to the early 20th century, when Trinidad was under British colonial rule. African drumming—deeply rooted in spiritual and cultural traditions—was seen as threatening. Colonial powers banned it, hoping to suppress community gatherings and rebellion. But as history often shows, you can’t silence the beat forever.

Out of necessity, the people of Trinidad turned to everyday objects to reclaim rhythm. Bamboo tubes, biscuit tins, garbage can lids… whatever they could find. Then came the oil drum—a symbol of the island’s industrial age that would become the backbone of a new musical revolution.

Through trial and error, steel workers, musicians, and street performers learned to shape and tune the drums into instruments. They pounded the metal, heated it with fire, and painstakingly created concave surfaces that could carry multiple notes.

It wasn’t just about the sound. The steel pan became a form of cultural expression—and defiance. It told colonial powers: We’re still here. We will be heard.

By the 1940s and 50s, steel bands were forming in communities across Trinidad. Groups like the Desperadoes, Renegades, and All Stars—names as bold as their sound. And each band wasn’t just music—it was identity, family, and pride.

Today, the steel pan is more than an instrument—it’s Trinidad and Tobago’s national treasure. Every year, during Carnival, thousands gather for Panorama, the world’s largest steel band competition. Bands spend months preparing, fine-tuning not just instruments, but complex musical arrangements that rival symphonies.

In just a few generations, the steel pan went from outlawed street music to concert halls, universities, and world stages. It’s a testament to Trinidad’s enduring spirit—transforming struggle into celebration.

And when we come back, we’ll explore how this proud island sound didn’t stay put. Steel pan music has spread far beyond Trinidad—across the Caribbean, and around the globe. And it’s found its way into jazz, classical, pop, reggae, and more.

Welcome back to Steel & Soul. In our first segment, we traced the steel pan’s rise from the streets of Port of Spain to becoming Trinidad and Tobago’s national instrument.

But steel pan didn’t stay home. It traveled. Across the Caribbean. Across oceans. Across musical genres.

From Barbados to St. Lucia, Grenada, Antigua, and St. Vincent, steel pan music became part of island life. Each country added its own flavor—some integrating it into Carnival, others teaching it in schools, and many forming youth steel bands to pass down the tradition.

Why did it spread so quickly? Because it speaks to the Caribbean soul—joyful, resilient, and unbreakable. And then… the world took notice. Today, you’ll find steel pan orchestras in London, New York, Toronto, Tokyo, and even Sweden.

Island Rhythms & Colorful Strolls: Curaçao’s Art, Soul, and Sea
Today, I’m taking you to an island that’s got rhythm, soul, flavor—and some of the bluest water I’ve ever seen. Welcome to Curaçao: a gem of the southern Caribbean, where each corner holds something special. This island is filled with wanderment and my show gets you ready to explore it all…

Speaking of exploring—I just got back from diving into this vibrant destination, and let me tell you, it’s more than just a pretty beach. Picture colorful street murals splashed across historic Dutch architecture, artists painting in open courtyards, and plates full of stewed goat, fried plantains, and seafood so fresh it’s practically still swimming. You know how I feel about trying local cuisine—yes, please!

While I cooled off in the sparkling turquoise sea, I also indulged in a little R&R at the stunning Marriott Curaçao Beach Resort. This elegant property sits right on the ocean, and from my room, I could walk directly onto the beach. A cozy patio let me enjoy the sunset with my toes in the sand. The breeze, the view, the service… yes, I was spoiled. Marriott Curacao Beach Resort has so many amenities - it's a premium six-acre beachfront resort in the lower Caribbean (out of the hurricane belt!). Just 15 minutes from the airport and 5 minutes from the downtown district, you're in your room and ready to start relaxing in no time. Come with all your travel buddies because with 336 modern, spacious rooms and suites there is room for everyone. You may want to skip the beach (can't believe I'm actually saying that) and enjoy the 2 pools, one of which is adults-only. After a day of touring you're ready for dinner and there are 5 on-site dining concepts for breakfast, lunch and dinner. And, top off the evening with live entertainment most evenings

But Curaçao is more than picture-perfect—it’s full of history, warmth, and a relaxed vibe that makes you want to slow down and stay awhile.

So grab a drink, kick off your shoes, and come along—because for this trip, I called on my local friend Tirzah, owner of Lokalish by I Am Tirzah. We chatted while her adorable pups Ozzie and Louie played nearby, and we mapped out the perfect day to take in Curaçao’s thriving street art and cultural scene.

Here's a list of tips and info to help you plan one of my favorite parts of visiting Curacao, the street art.

Destination: Nova Scotia and Jekyll Island Adventures
Destination:  Nova Scotia and Jekyll Island Adventures
History, Adventure and Cuisine

Nova Scotia and Jekyll Island adventures are waiting for you. I can take you on a journey to the world’s most captivating destinations! Today, we’re heading to the stunning province of Nova Scotia, Canada and Jekyll Island, Georgia for adventures, history and cuisine. Known for its rugged coastline, breathtaking landscapes, and rich maritime history, Nova Scotia is an outdoor lover’s paradise. Whether you're into hiking, whale watching, or just soaking in the salty sea air, there’s something for everyone in this coastal gem. It is truly an outdoor playground.

Nova Scotia and Jekyll Island adventures are on a long, long list. So, let’s start with hiking and Coastal Adventures along the beautiful shores of Nova Scotia. One of the best ways to experience Nova Scotia is on foot. The province boasts hundreds of scenic trails, but if you’re looking for the ultimate hike, the Skyline Trail in Cape Breton Highlands National Park should be at the top of your list. With sweeping views of the Gulf of St. Lawrence, this easy-to-moderate trail offers a chance to spot bald eagles, and even whales from the cliffs above.

For those who prefer a mix of history and nature, the Old Town Lunenburg is a must-visit. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site… I love finding these historic sites and this is one of the best-preserved examples of a British colonial settlement and offers colorful 18th-century architecture, along with charming waterfront trails.

I think everyone loves to see whales in their natural habitat and whale Watching in Nova Scotia is certainly a highlight.  You can also get out on the water for sporting activities.  Nova Scotia is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, making it a haven for marine life. Hop on a boat in the Bay of Fundy, home to some of the world’s highest tides and an excellent place to spot humpback, minke, and even the rare North Atlantic right whale. There in the Bay of Fundy an astonishing 160 billion tons of seawater flow in and out every day, creating dramatic tidal shifts up to 50 feet. When you visit, it is a magnificent site to see the drastic change in water level as the tides change. This unique environment not only supports diverse marine life but also offers incredible experiences like tidal bore rafting on the Shubenacadie River, where visitors can ride the powerful incoming tides in a thrilling adventure. Kayaking along the coastline is another unforgettable experience—paddle through sea caves, past rugged cliffs, and alongside playful seals. It’s all there…. All you need to do is bring along you desire to have a grand adventure. This is one you can definitely share with family and friends back home. You may even have a chance to brag a bit about this one.

Speaking of being out on the water. There are tasty bites that come from the waters too.  What’s top of the list is Lobster!

After a day of adventure, there’s no better way to refuel than with some fresh Nova Scotia seafood—especially lobster! For an authentic experience, head to The Shore Club in Hubbards, where they’ve been serving traditional lobster suppers since 1936. If you’re in Halifax, don’t miss The Five Fishermen, known for its rich seafood history and legendary lobster dishes. But, my favorite and I highly recommend this experience of eating, driving to the area and seeing the climate and weather change right before your eyes. Come for a casual but equally delicious meal, at Hall’s Harbour Lobster Pound where you’ll enjoy a classic maritime experience -  you can choose your own lobster fresh from the tank and enjoy it overlooking the Bay of Fundy. Afterwards, walk around the small town and check out the area. You’ll thank me for this one… for sure.

Traveling along the shore has always been fascinating … to see small towns and fishing vil...

Canada Black Loyalists
and American Revolutionary War
Canada Black Loyalists and American Revolutionary War have a very unique Black history connection. Our history dates before Harriet Tubman and her march to freedom. The underground railroad’s path to Canada is well known and documented. From 1820 to 1861, those seeking to find freedom would go north to Canada on the Underground Railroad’s secret network - a path helping those enslaved find freedom.

Did you know, that more than 30 years before the underground railroad, Blacks immigrated to Canada. Here’s the story, where we learn more about the things we thought we already knew.

The American Revolution which started in 1775, was not just a war for American colony’s independence—it was also a fight for freedom for thousands of enslaved Blacks. Both the Patriots - the Americans and British - the Loyalists used enslaved people in their armies. It was the British who offered a path to freedom for those who were - loyal to the British military.  Many were able to escape their enslavers in Virginia, the Carolinas and Georgia, joining to support the British.

With the signing of the Treaty of Paris in 1783, the war ended. And, now it was time for the British to hold true to their promise of freedom. New York was the last British held port and it became the place of gathering for those who had fought with the British. For more than 3000 British loyalist, both black and white, it was the location to get their names on an important ledger.

There were two ledgers created, one for the Americans listing those who had escaped documenting their financial value and help with compensation for their loss. For the British, it was the list of those who would embark on a journey to a British held land…. The journey to freedom, to a new life, to a choice to be valued as human beings.

This list became known as the Book of Negroes, listing if they were a slave or free, indentured servant, age, their enslaver, their work, also listed was their ship’s name, and the port they would enter in their new home - Nova Scotia. One settlement is Birchtown, the location where today you can visit the Black Loyalitst Heritage center where you’ll be immersed in the history, bravery, courage and fortitude of the Black Loyalist. The museum features exhibits the names and stories of thousands who escaped the bounds of slavery to freedom.

On our show, we talk with Andrea Davis, Executive Director of the Black Loyalist Heritage Center and a descendant of Black Loyalists about the history of those who sought freedom and their stories.

Take a listen. We think you'll find this history fascinating and more about the things you thought you already knew.

Cayuga, New York
Harriet Tubman & Cayuga, New York are both a story of resilience, commitment and dedication. Harriet Tubman chose Cayuga, New York as her home Choosing the city of Auburn as the place to settle with her family.

After working on the Underground Railroad, she moved to Cayuga County. Although she is best known for her daring missions to free enslaved people via the Underground Railroad, her work as an activist in her new hometown is one not as well known. In her later years, Tubman settled in Cayuga County, NY, with her family. She continued to fight for justice, dedicating her life advocating for civil rights, women's suffrage, and providing care for those in need. Tubman's great, great, great grand-niece Deanna Stanford Walz shared, "Harriet was courageous to put her life in danger to not only be a spy in the armed forces but also to go back to Maryland to bring family and friends up north and into Canada; that's so courageous to care so much about your people to put your own life in danger to set them free and take care of them."

On this show, Deanna talks with Annita about her great, great, great grand aunt and how she was dedicated to helping others.  Also, during the Civil War, Tubman was a nurse, cook, and spy for the Union Army. She played a critical role in the Combahee River Raid in 1863, guiding Union forces to liberate over 700 enslaved people in South Carolina. She is the first woman in U.S. history to lead an armed military operation.

As an activist and humanitarian she established the Harriet Tubman Home for the Aged, assisting elderly and formerly enslaved people. She became an advocate for women's suffrage, aligning with leaders like Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton. Her speeches inspired many, as she linked the struggles of Black Americans with the broader fight for gender equality.

Adventures In
Botswana and Zimbabwe
Some places are magical with the people and spaces you visit. Africa holds some of the worlds most dramatic locals where you can have the best time of your.  Having adventures in Botswana and Zimbabwe is on so many bucket lists and here's a plan for taking it off your bucket list and making it happen.

Take a listen to the show where I act as your safari guide taking you from the fascinating ecosystem of Botswana's Okavango Delta to Zimbabwe's Victoria Falls. It's a spectacular journey and you'll hear all about it.

On the show I share my favorite adventures in Botswana and Zimbabwe however, I can say my most memorable and the one which took me completely out of my comfort zone was staying in the wild camp or bush camp as it is also called. Before I go into it all, let me tell you a bit about Botswana and the Okavango Delta.

The Okavango River is located 995mi from the highlands of Angola where it's water originates. It reaches the Kalahari and spreads into a large swamp where the water feeds  the plant life, evaporates, and stays there, never reaching the sea. Some refer to the Okavango Delta, as a swamp however, I prefer delta. It is one of the largest inland deltas on Earth and a true natural wonder and should be on everyone's bucket list. It is an African jewel. The area is  home to a vast array of wildlife - elephants, hippos, lions, zebra and more along with a long list of birds.

Adventures in Botswana and Zimbabwe are not complete without maneuvering through the waters and through the delta's think, tall water grasses. You're gliding through in Mokoro dugout canoes poled by local villagers who have grown up here. The highlight is reaching your camping site where our local guides jump in right away to preparing the camp.  The polers are multi-talented and get our camp prepared with canvas dome tents with camp stretchers, mattresses, sleeping bags and pillows all provided to make bush camping comfortable. In the delta, you get to experience African wilderness at its fullest - day time walking safaris and night time around a campfire admiring the Milky Way and sky with a billion twinkling stars.

There so much more. Take a listen to the show by clicking the link below. I share the whole experience and how you can too. You can do it all with Exodus Travels where they'll give you the choice of all camping or camping and lodging.  Visit their website - Exodus Travels.

Adventure Canada Expedition Cruises let you go exploring the Arctic and Inuit towns offering a unique and enriching experience, combining stunning landscapes with the opportunity to learn about the rich cultural heritage of the Inuit people.  I had a chance to travel with Adventure Canada Expedition Cruises on their Heart of the Arctic itinerary.  There were vast tundras, icy fjords, glaciers and the polar nights were filled with bright stars.

Wildlife included polar bears, whales and migratory birds nesting and circling the rocky sea side, making our expeditions extraordinary and spectacular.

Adventure Canada takes you on a cultural experience. Visiting the Inuit villages and towns were a great way to learn about the traditional practices such as hunting, fishing, and dog sledding. I had a chance to see artists working with tricot carvings... right in front of you. Artists making beadwork clothing and jewelry.  So much of what they use is locally sourced materials like bone, ivory and sealskin.

Community Life on Adventure Canada Expedition cruises is an opportunity to visit with close-knit communities and see how they adapt to extreme weather conditions, learn about day-to-day life, try local foods including seal, caribou, Arctic char and if you're lucky a little taste of whale.

Visit their website - Adventurecanada.com
Bring along your travel insurance too - Allianz Travel Insurance

Take a look at the photos below for a view of life on a journey with Adventure Canada. The photos can only slightly capture the beauty, the wonder and the amazing time sailing through the Arctic. The cold breezes on your face while watching waterfalls, the spectacular luckiness catching an iceberg shifting and turning, spotting a polar bear swimming along the shore. It is all so unbelievable and breathtaking. It is a dream trip and one to put top of your list for your next adventure. You won't be disappointed.  Enjoy the photos.

Old Ninety-Six District, South Carolina

Georgia’s neighboring state and Old Ninety-Six District is close by, filled with opportunities to hike, fish, learn more about history, experience old traditions and two of my favorite things to do; shop and eat.

A couple of years ago I was invited to visit Old Ninety-Six District, South Carolina located in the Upper Western section of the state.  First I was excited to find how close it is and how easy it is to discover so many things to do over a weekend. Next, I loved how relaxed the area is for time to shop, enjoy the local cuisine and explore historic sites.  The friendly and warm people were welcoming made it feel like home. Driving around the area made this road trip one I have been recommending for years.

The Old 96 District is home to amazing outdoor adventures -  from hiking, biking, walking trails and my favorite is getting out on the several lakes you’ll find in the area. Walking along the shore or deciding any one of the lakes is perfect for paddle boarding. I loved a stroll along the lake side.

There are several counties which make up the old 96 district.  Abbeville, Edgefield, Greenwood, McCormick and Laurens.  Each county is filled with history, perfect for those who love exploring the areas where our U.S. history took place. It's a history lover's destination.

I love the feel of Stepping back in time  - the historic homes and buildings, town squares and the ease of walking the cities blocks to check out shopping, restaurants, distilleries and attractions.  If you love the feel of visiting small towns… you know the stepping in to a norman Rockwell painting…. Old Ninety-Six District, South Carolina is your spot.

Take a listen to my chat with various chefs in the area who share the culinary experience you can have while visiting. It's a delicious destination.

Bad Weather Travel Tips

Travel is all about the fun and excitement of all your plans coming together for a wonderful getaway. What happens when travel is impacted by bad weather? One thing is we are very disappointed and can even be devastated. Our plans are delayed or, in some cases, completely changed or canceled. Allianz Travel Insurance -  bad weather travel tips can help you ensure your travel investment, worry less, and focus on getting back on track.

Planning travel during the seasons where the weather is lousy means paying close attention to all aspects of our travel itinerary. I talked with my travel buddy, Allianz Travel Insurance, about the steps we can take when booking travel, while en route, and when we are at our destinations having fun.

I asked my friends at Allianz Travel Insurance U.S. to come on the radio and share tips for being prepared. Dan Durazo, director of external affairs at Allianz Partners talked about several scenarios. His tips are helpful.

There are many situations which are caused by bad weather and storms impacting travel in many ways, including:

Flight cancellations and delays
Storms can cancel or delay flights near the airport you're leaving or heading to.

Hotel closures
Hotels may close in preparation for severe weather and not just once the storm starts. They may also be damaged and unavailable for vacationers before starting or completing their stay. They can remain closed for days after the weather has passed. This can directly affect plans where you feel you've dodged the storm, but nope, the destination may have damages that last long into the next weeks or months.

Transportation delays
There are more ways to travel than airplanes. Trains, planes, and automobiles are getting us to our vacation spot.  What about once we're there - public transportation and other commuter travel may be delayed before a storm or may be damaged or closed during the storm. Allianz Travel Insurance -  bad weather travel tips can help us with what to do next when things change before or during our travel.

Evacuations
The weather can take the fun out of our vacations. Sometimes, we must get out of the way even before the weather comes our way.  This is an important part of vacationing during rough weather seasons. During hurricane season, evacuations from areas with forecasted stormy weather are essential. You certainly can't play around with this. Bad weather reports to evacuate means it's time to go now—no questions about it. If a hurricane's path is in a major travel destination, travelers may be ordered to evacuate, with no option to stay.

Cruise lines
Heading out on a cruise during hurricane season means being flexible. I know you've wanted to go to dream ports, but here comes the storm. Cruise lines may alter their itineraries or delay departures from certain ports. Make the most of it. What's fun about cruising is the cruise line's ability to change the itinerary yet keep everything focused on exploring great destinations.

Tours and attractions
Plans can change, and disappointment is a real thing. Tours, attractions, events, festivals - all the things you plan to do can be affected by the weather. It is no fun to arrive at your event and see a sign saying - canceled. Yikes, that's the worst. It happens, and you need to know the next steps. Hold on to those tickets and receipts and get ready to make new plans. Tourist attractions may close in preparation for severe weather and may be damaged and remain closed. We can't tell Mother Nature what to do. There are no magic wands to wave, but there are ways to keep the stress down, feel comfortable being flexible,

Alaska Bear Camp

When the call of the wild beckons, the Natural Habitat Adventures Alaska Bear Camp offers a unique opportunity to observe Coastal Brown Bears in their natural habitat. You'll be privileged to witness these magnificent animals' daily lives in a sustainable base camp designed for bear-watching. This is a chance to immerse yourself in the pristine natural habitat of Alaska's coastal grizzly bears, with a strong focus on conservation and sustainability. The camp provides comfortable wilderness accommodations with minimal impact on the environment, and the scenic flight to the camp offers breathtaking views of glacier-covered volcanoes, sapphire waters, and snow-capped mountains.

While some camping may sound outside their comfort zone, Natural Habitat Adventure Alaska Bear Camp is more like clamping than camping. Their private fly-in camp is located on the beach, where bears stroll by searching for a snack from the shore or roaming to their next spot to forge in the meadow. The roomy tents are more of a cabin setup than what we consider a tent. Each is furnished with two beds, a porta-potty, and a heater. The bathhouse has two private stalls with a shower and a state-of-the-art composting toilet. For a campsite, this truly brings creature comforts. The dinner area has a long table perfect for mealtime gatherings, guide presentations, snacks, and happy hour after excursions. There are also charging stations for cameras and phones in the dining tent.

Excursions to view the bears are morning, mid-day, and evening. Luckily for us, daylight extends late into the evening when visiting Alaska. Perfect for catching bears late in the evening when they're grazing and roaming near the viewing stands. Look from the second or ground levels, where watching is perfect from either vantage. Natural Habitat Adventures Alaska Bear Camp is built on a historic homestead on the ancestral land of the Dena'ina people; the parcel was grandfathered in to remain private when Lake Clark National Park was established in 1980. The site allows for immersive Coastal brown bear encounters for Nat Hab guests alone.

Self-Guided and Guided Bicycle Tours

Taking self-guided or guided bicycle tours is an excellent way to see a destination at your own pace and from a different angle. Go at your own pace and take a few moments to enjoy the sights and sounds a little longer. On a self-guided tour, your routing and instructions for a well-planned trip are prepared for you, but you can make it your own. You can go as slow or fast as you would like. Self-guided and guided bicycle tours are very similar in planning attractions and sites. The only difference with a guided tour is having a guide come along to share details and help with routing  - or to give the added confidence some may need to navigate cities and country roads.

Cyclist couple riding together

Either way, self-guided or guided bike tours will take you on an adventure filled with memories to share back home. I speak with Maria Elena Price about her company, ExperiencePlus! Bicycle Tours, on this show. She and her sister co-own the business started by their parents. Their company offers both self-guided and guided tours around the globe.

Family on a bike tour

Next up on the show is the tradition of Geisha in Japan. What are the myths, the impressions, and the details around one of the most fascinating Japanese traditions? For many years, the tradition has been more of a mystery for outsiders to understand the intricate details of this part of Japanese culture. Oku Japan offers self-guided and guided tours where you can explore off-the-beaten paths outside big cities. Tour options allow you to learn about Geisha traditions, hear the history of how the tradition has changed through the years, and how the practice is perceived today.

Dressing as Geisha is a very popular tourist activity

Destination: Little Corn Island Nicaragua- Yemaya Reefs Resort
 Little Corn Island Nicaragua
Yemaya Reefs Resort
Little Corn Island, Nicaragua, has me asking, "Are you ready for a relaxing getaway with cool breezes, blue waters, and a beach to yourself?"  I recently enjoyed four days on the beautiful, pristine, undeveloped island. The cool ocean breeze, turquoise waters, and warm, friendly people made me feel welcome in this hidden gem.

The highlight of my time in Little Corn Island, Nicaragua was the indulgence of Yemaya Reefs Resort. This luxury haven, with its array of amenities and comforts, is designed to make you forget the outside world and focus solely on your time at the seaside resort, ensuring you feel pampered and relaxed.

Little Corn Island is Big Corn Island's little sister, off Nicaragua's coast. Both are part of the archipelago of the Nicaraguan coast in Central America. The Corn Islands are owned and managed by the Nicaraguan government and bordered by Honduras to the north and Costa Rica to the south.  The country has seen its share of influence from various people and cultures calling it home.

What I love most about Little Corn Island is not only the sun and fun but also the quiet relaxation compared to other destinations in the Caribbean. It is a great place to relax and unwind and a laid-back alternative to other "first-consideration Caribbean spots" like the Bahamas, the Virgin Islands, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, and Cancun. Don't get me wrong; those are great, too. However, Little Corn Island, Nicaragua, has the relaxation vibes down perfectly.

Little Corn Island, Nicaragua, is just a few stops from home. Start your journey with a flight from home to Miami or Houston. The next stop is Managua, Nicaragua.  A quick plane ride from Managua to Big Corn Island and a boat ride from Big Corn Island to Little Corn Island starts your time on one of the most relaxing getaways I've had in a long, long time.

The undeveloped vibe of Little Corn Island is immediately apparent, promising a vacation free from crowds. No need to search for a spot on the beach or wait in long lines to enjoy activities and recreation. It's all about nature and more nature. The tall palms sway in the breeze, and the turquoise waters beckon, creating a peaceful and serene atmosphere.

You may ask, what made my stay one where I would stay instead of coming home— it was staying at the luxurious yet comfortable and unassuming Yemaya Reefs resorts? During my stay, I had a chance to sit down and talk with Carlos Ambrosi, the General Manager of Yemaya Reefs luxury resort. He shares all the details and how you, too, can have a memorable experience while washing away all the stress of day-to-day life. Carlos shares how to get your "relax and no worries" vibe all day and into the night.
