Cognitive dysfunction is a common manifestation of multiple sclerosis, and while there has been a lack of research into treatments to prevent cognitive problems, diagnosis and recognition are greater problems. Patients who develop cognitive dysfunction can have difficulty with processing speed, attention, executive functioning, social functioning, and memory. These symptoms can go unrecognized by the patient and their family, and unless specific screening for cognitive dysfunction is done, neurologists are not likely to recognize cognitive decline.
