9 And to some who trusted in themselves as just, and despised others, he spoke also this parable:

Mary was cared for by St John for twelve years after our Lord's Ressurection. Her life was spent in helping the Apostles and in praying for the conversion of the world. Jesus Himself came to conduct here thither; the whole court of heaven came to welcome with songs of triumph the Mother of the Divine Word.

The Cur d'Ars was born at Dardilly, near Lyons, in 1786. The sanctity of St John Vianney gives to the obscure village Ars a universal fame. As parish priest he converted sinners and directed souls, not only those of his own flock, but people of all nations and conditions who came to consult this Spiritual Director. He died on August 4, A.D. 1859, and was canonized A.D. 1925.
24 No man can serve two masters. For either he will hate the one, and love the other: or he will sustain the one, and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.

St Cajetan founded the Order of Theatines, who endeavoured to imitate the Apostles in absolute poverty, trusting alone in the divine Providence. The "Hunter of souls" as he was called, died A.D. 1547, after a life of extraordinary austerity and mystical experiences.

The Dedication of the Church of our Lady of the Snow
The Church was built at Rome, on Mount Esquiline, in the fourth century during the pontificate of Pope Liberius. In the middle ages a graceful and popular tradition ascribed its foundation to a noble patrician who, having been favoured with a vision of Mary, caused it to be erected on a spot covered by a miraculous fall of snow.

Dominic Guzman, born in Spain, opposed the errors of the Albigenses. He founded the Order of the Friars Preachers, contributing to devotion to the Rosary, saving the Wester Church from heresy and anarchy. He died A.D. 1221.

4 I know what I will do, that when I shall be removed from the stewardship, they may receive me into their houses.

5 Therefore calling together every one of his lord's debtors, he said to the first: How much dost thou owe my lord?

6 But he said: An hundred barrels of oil. And he said to him: Take thy bill and sit down quickly, and write fifty.

7 Then he said to another: And how much dost thou owe? Who said: An hundred quarters of wheat. He said to him: Take thy bill, and write eighty.

8 And the lord commended the unjust steward, forasmuch as he had done wisely: for the children of this world are wiser in their generation than the children of light.

9 And I say to you: Make unto you friends of the mammon of iniquity; that when you shall fail, they may receive you into everlasting dwellings.

Parable of the unjust steward, reminding us of our duties, for we are the children of light, who must not be outdone by the children of this world in zeal.

2 And he said to them: The harvest indeed is great, but the labourers are few. Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he send labourers into his harvest.

3 Go: Behold I send you as lambs among wolves.
Ite : ecce ego mitto vos sicut agnos inter lupos.
4 Carry neither purse, nor scrip, nor shoes; and salute no man by the way.
Nolite portare sacculum, neque peram, neque calceamenta, et neminem per viam salutaveritis.
5 Into whatsoever house you enter, first say: Peace be to this house.
In quamcumque domum intraveritis, primum dicite : Pax huic domui :
6 And if the son of peace be there, your peace shall rest upon him; but if not, it shall return to you.
et si ibi fuerit filius pacis, requiescet super illum pax vestra : sin autem, ad vos revertetur.
7 And in the same house, remain, eating and drinking such things as they have: for the labourer is worthy of his hire. Remove not from house to house.

This Neopolitan nobleman renounced all earthly things. He established the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (Redemptorists) to preach the Gospel to the poor. Illustrious by his preaching and writings, he was made to accept the bisopric of St Agatha in Southern Italy. He returned to his congregation and died A.D. 1787.
13 And Jesus came into the quarters of Caesarea Philippi: and he asked his disciples, saying: Whom do men say that the Son of man is?

The Church venerates on this day the basilica of St Peter "ad vincula" on Mount Esquiline at Rome, the chains with which the prince of the apostles was fettered.
The seven Machabees, who were brothers, were martyred with their mother under Antiochus Epiphanes. Their relics are kept at Rome in the Church of St Peter's Chains.

Ignatius, courtier and knight, was wounded at the siege of Pamplona. During his long convalescence his reading of the lives of the Saints revealed to him that the Church militant needed an army of glorious soldiers to fight the forces combined against it; Pagans, Mohammedans, Protestants, etc. He founded the Society of Jesus and as first General of this new spiritual chivalry he moved to the attack under the motto: "Ad majorem Dei gloriam--To the greater glory of God!" He died with the Holy Name of Jesus on his lips A.D. 1556.

Abdon and Sennon, natives of Persia, were arrested and brought to Rome. They suffered martyrdom under Decius A.D. 254.
38 Now it came to pass as they went, that he entered into a certain town: and a certain woman named Martha, received him into her house.
Factum est autem, dum irent, et ipse intravit in quoddam castellum : et mulier quaedam, Martha nomine, excepit illum in domum suam,
39 And she had a sister called Mary, who sitting also at the Lord's feet, heard his word.
et huic erat soror nomine Maria, quae etiam sedens secus pedes Domini, audiebat verbum illius.
40 But Martha was busy about much serving. Who stood and said: Lord, hast thou no care that my sister hath left me alone to serve? speak to her therefore, that she help me.
Martha autem satagebat circa frequens ministerium : quae stetit, et ait : Domine, non est tibi curae quod soror mea reliquit me solam ministrare? dic ergo illi ut me adjuvet.
41 And the Lord answering, said to her: Martha, Martha, thou art careful, and art troubled about many things:
Et respondens dixit illis Dominus : Martha, Martha, sollicita es, et turbaris erga plurima,
42 But one thing is necessary. Mary hath chosen the best part, which shall not be taken away from her.
porro unum est necessarium. Maria optimam partem elegit, quae non auferetur ab ea.
Martha, sister of Mary Magdalen and Lazarus, lived at Bethany a humble active life. She often gave hospitality to our Lord. According to one account they ended their days at Marseilles-St Lazarus as Bishop, St Mary Magdalen as anchoress, St Martha as head of a small community of holy women.
