Rundown

Mexie speaks with returning guest, Dr. Kristen R. Ghodsee, about her new book, Everyday Utopia. Everyday Utopia explores two millennia of human experiments in living differently to inspire radical hope in building a post-capitalist, post-patriarchal world. Kristen is the critically acclaimed author of Why Women Have Better Sex Under Socialism, and Red Valkyries: Feminist Lessons from Five Revolutionary Women. Kristen joined Mexie on the show once before to speak about Why Women Have Better Sex Under Socialism and decommodifying our relationships, an important talk which is linked below.

96. ‘Post-Veganism’: Beyond the Diet w. Ash

Rundown

In this episode, Mexie and Ash from the Horror Vanguard podcast analyze the vegan consumer boycott as a tactic towards total human and animal liberation. As two long-time vegans who have had a rocky journey, Mexie and Ash grapple with how to build a liberated world while honouring differences in ability and tradition. It’s a vulnerable, raw and, we think, important conversation.

95. Trophy Hunting, the Wildlife Trade, and “Sustainable” Use w. Jared Kukura

Rundown

Mexie speaks with conservation writer, Jared Kukura, about the history and political economy of trophy hunting, the wildlife trade, and the concept of sustainable use. We discuss the colonial-capitalist history of ‘fortress’ and neoliberal conservation around the world, and how trophy hunting furthers neo-colonialism. We talk about the philanthrocapitalists involved in promoting these industries, and end with a discussion of what alternative approaches to conservation might be, including Indigenous-led conservation and convivial conservation.

93. The Dark History and Politics of Birth Control w. Nic & Kathrin

Rundown

This episode shares a stream that Mexie, Nic (of Pynk Spots) and Kathrin (of the Kathrin YouTube channel) did on A Little to the Left all about birth control. It’s basically everything we wish we knew before we each opted to take the pill at a very young age.

We’ll talk about the necessity of birth control options, of course, and how liberatory its access has been for many people. However we’ll also be digging into the disturbing history and politics around the birth control pill, and looking at the health impacts it has had for people with wombs. We’ll discuss the racist and eugenicist history of the pill and other forms of birth control, and dig into the politics around condom use and ‘stealthing’. We’ll end with exploring other options for birth control, and the importance of informed choice. As always, we’ll be bringing in our own experiences along with historical facts and political analysis.

87. Half-Earth Socialism: A Plan To Save The Future From Extinction, Climate Change and Pandemics w. Troy Vettese

Rundown

In this episode, Mexie talks with Marxist, vegan academic and activist, Dr. Troy Vettese, about his new co-authored book (with Drew Pendergrass), Half-Earth Socialism: A Plan To Save the Future from Extinction, Climate Change, and Pandemics. We start by discussing the importance of utopian socialism and reinvigorating our radical creativity to be daring enough to lay out clear visions for post-capitalist futures. Troy then takes us through his critiques of geogengineering and nuclear power as non-solutions that support the status quo, and the links between animal agriculture, capitalism and ecological crisis. We then get into a brief history of important thinkers in Soviet planning and Cybernetics, and how Troy and Drew drew on these thinkers to develop multi-metric models to determine what possible futures we could imagine that would be sustainable for 10 billion people. Troy also takes us through their specific proposals and exercises in visionary fiction with regards to Half-Earth Socialism. For anyone interested in playing with the models, they’ve developed a video game that allows everyone to try their hand at planning and devise potential scenarios for sustainable, socialist futures.

85. The Imperialist Sex Trade w. Esperanza Fonseca & Khara Jabola-Carolus

Rundown

Mexie is joined by Esperanza Fonseca and Khara Jabola-Carolus of the transnational feminist and anti-imperialist organization, AF3IRM, to discuss the history and present of the global sex trade and the insufficiency of the liberal feminist discourses surrounding it. We’ll discuss the history of the industry, its relation to colonialism, imperialism and militarization (as well as patriarchy and capitalism), the class character and class contradictions involved in the trade, the politics of buying, the voices of the most marginalized often left out of mainstream discourses, and visions for a liberated future. We are of course fiercely in support of the workers, or people selling in the trade, and believe liberal feminist discourses do a disservice to all by falsely conflating a critique of the industry and exploiter classes with a critique of the workers.

Rundown

In this episode, Mexie speaks with Nic (host of the Pynk Spots podcast and YouTube channel) and Kathrin (host of the Kathrin YouTube channel) about the absolute trash fire that is the Johnny Depp defamation trial. We discuss the circus that’s been made of what should be a very somber trial, the rampant misogyny in the public discourse, the lionization of Johnny and demonization of Amber despite the mountain of quite damming evidence against Johnny, menpathy, #MeToo, and the implications of all of this for survivors of domestic abuse and sexual assault. This is a very heavy topic and we’ve used it as an opportunity to really dig in on a number of incredibly important issues and the severity of this cultural moment.

83. Ending Animal Testing w. Monica Engebretson (Cruelty Free International)

Rundown

In this episode, Mexie speaks with Monica Engebretson of Cruelty Free International about two pieces of legislation the organization is putting forward in the U.S. to reduce cruel and unnecessary animal testing. We discuss what life is like for animals subject to various tests and the multitude of alternatives that are far more effective, human-relevant, and humane. We also let listeners know how they can support the bills and similar legislation elsewhere.

Background info: Approximately 60,000 dogs, 18,000 cats and 140,000 rabbits are used in experiments in the US every year and many may be killed and discarded if they are considered no longer useful to the laboratory, even if they could be released for adoption into loving homes. The NIH currently spends at least $12 billion of taxpayers’ money on animal testing every year, but research shows that the return on investment is often low, and the results inaccurate. The NIH reports that approximately 90 percent of promising medications have failed in human clinical studies despite having passed pre-clinical studies, including animal tests.

79. The Male Gaze is Ruining Your Sex Life w. Nic & Kathrin

Rundown

This episode is the podcast version of a conversation Mexie had with YouTubers Nic (YT: Pynk Spots) and Kathrin (YT: Kathrin) on their joint sex stream channel called A Little to the Left. In this episode we dissect the male gaze in media, explain what it is, how it operates, and discuss its various impacts as we all internalize it. We get personal but also tie the gaze to broader structures like patriarchy, capitalism, and colonialism. If you’d like to hear similar conversations, follow us over on A Little to the Left. 😉
