Actor Ed Begley Jr. - Surviving a Bizarre Gardening Accident
Just in time for Spinal Tap 2: Ed Begley Jr. is our very first TMEP Show guest who actually appeared in "This Is Spinal Tap." In Ed's memorable scene, he shows up as Spinal Tap's original drummer John “Stumpy" Pepys looking like Buddy Holly behind the kit -- instant classic. Begley tells us about the time Harry Nilsson surprised him with a dinner invitation at John and Yoko’s place at The Dakota; smoking a J with Charles Manson; and, of course, how filming a “test scene” that actually ended up getting use in the movie led to him being enshired in Spinal Tap lore. In this short VIDEO, Ed describes that homecooked meal with the Lennons. Quick Taps - Paul McCartney | Penny Lane For Your Thoughts
Enjoy an entire Quick Tap dedicated to the guy who wrote “Good Day Sunshine” because, well, it sounds like he spreads that wherever he goes - Beatles bassist Paul McCartney. Yes, that same Macca who is making a much talked about cameo appearance in the feature film, Spinal Tap 2: The End Continues - coming out on September 12th!!! You'll hear from host of the Bad Decisions podcast, Scott Nathan, about the time Nathan introduced a friend to Paul back in the '90s and everything went Helter Skelter (not really); former senior head of rock promotion at Columbia Records, Paul Rappaport, who tells us about the night he got a little help from his Beatle friend; and Gary Anthony Williams - the voice of Uncle Ruckus on The Boondocks - who saw Paul standing there at a script reading and was offered some delicious pita by the charming Liverpudlian himself. It sounds like everyone has got to get a little McCartney into their lives! The Police's Stewart Copeland - Stalker Anthems + Temper Tantrums
Late May and early June 1983 is when The Police's defining song "Every Breath You Take" was released and promptly steamrolled its way to #1 in the UK (hitting the top spot on June 5th) before conquering America a month later. While Sting's creepy-but-catchy ode to obsessive surveillance was busy becoming the band's biggest hit and the year's most-played song, Copeland admits the trio was so dysfunctional they could scarcely record in the same room together. Stewart says about Sting, "The times when it was most annoying was when he was right. That's when the homicidal urge, I couldn't resist it. My fingers would be reaching for that jugular." Enjoy this short VIDEO where Stewart's storytelling chops go to 11 when he describes getting lost on the way to a show and then the band having a blowout fight onstage in front of 80,000 fans. Don't stand so close to me, indeed! WATCH HERE: https://youtu.be/4bozB5MqLZc In this episode, The Police drummer waives his rights and confesses to fracturing Sting’s rib over a copy of the New York Times; how many more albums the band could have cranked out if they hadn’t split up in 1986; and why it was necessary to call 911 when Cream drummer Ginger Baker paid a noisy visit to Stewart's Sacred Grove Studio. --- ***http://distrokid.com/vip/tmep*** Too Much Effing Perspective is grateful to be sponsored by DISTROKID - the best way for Musicians, Songwriters, Producers, DJs to get their original music into Spotify, Apple, TikTok, and all the major platforms. Julie Bowen - Gettin' Down On Jim Morrison's Grave
The 49th anniversary of Jim Morrison and the Doors taking the stage for the first time as the house band at LA's legendary Whisky a Go Go is May 23, 2025. Just over a year later their song Light My Fire would go to #1 on the Billboard charts. But none of that compares to the release An American Werewolf in Paris -- a film in which future Modern Family star Julie Bowen makes history with a werewolf on top of Jim Morrison's grave. Bark at the moon, indeed! The hilarious VIDEO where Julie recounts the awkward logistics of pulling off this funky cinematic feat is not to be missed. WATCH HERE: https://youtube.com/shorts/Xycl9OzzD04 Julie Bowen's Spinal Tap Moments run the gamut from a very uncomfortable rainbow-afro-wigs incident with her Modern Family co-stars, to auditioning for the show while pregnant with twins, to career lowlights such as appearing (barely) in the movie, Amy's Orgasm...all told with Julie's punchy, self-deprecating sense of humor. Violent Femmes Brian Ritchie - Just Keep Going
Among auspicious April events in rock 'n' roll history, April 13, 1983, is the date that Violent Femmes released their beloved, eponymous first album and gifted the world with Blister in the Sun, Add It Up, Gone Daddy Gone, and other instant classics. The album has ascended to the status of "generational hand-me-down" according to Violent Femmes founding member and our fellow Milwaukeean, Brian Ritchie. April 5, 1994 is the date that Nirvana's Kurt Cobain passed away. Both topics loom large in this conversation with Brian. The Replacements Tommy Stinson - Getting stupid (and clever) with Axl Rose, Gene Simmons, Tom Petty and...of course...Paul Westerberg
Before January wraps, let's celebrate that 39 years ago this month on January 18, 1986, the Replacements got banned for life from SNL. In the middle of playing "Bastards of Young" on live TV, singer Paul Westerberg yelled to guitarist Bob Stinson, "Come on, F*cker!" during this guitar solo. In a combo platter of VIDEO and audio featuring one of our favorite guests, Tommy Stinson tells the story of yet another rowdy New York incident when the band played at the legendary CBGB. When the God of Thunder, Gene Simmons from KISS, walked in the Replacements decided that being on their worst behavior was exactly what the occasion called for.
