216. Guy Doza: The Language of Evil




Guy Doza is a speechwriter, trainer, and public affairs consultant. He started his career in political research before branching out into corporate speechwriting. He now works independently for a range of international clients whom he writes on a variety of subjects. Guy is a two time TEDx speaker and has lectured on rhetoric at several of the world’s leading universities. He has published two books with Canbury Press.



The Language of Evil



Guy’s book, “The Language of Evil,” was written to demonstrate the dangerous, manipulative side of rhetoric that he often warned people about. His research for the book revealed that tyrants and dictators throughout history, from Julius Caesar to Saddam Hussein, used remarkably similar rhetorical patterns to gain and maintain power.



Guy identified three core manipulative techniques: creating a cult of personality (ethos), twisting an audience’s emotions (pathos), and manufacturing a common, hidden enemy to unify their followers. He argues that rhetoric is most dangerous when used on an audience that does not understand how it works, and he advocated for rhetoric to be taught more widely in schools. Guy believes that modern social media acts as a “megaphone for the most toxic elements of rhetoric,” which has led to increased polarization and a breakdown in civil debate. To defend against manipulation, he advises individuals to critically examine their own enthusiastic agreement with a speaker, to learn the mechanics of rhetoric, and to understand their own fundamental values.

Elevate Your Decision-Making Reports and Presentations
Davina helps executives prepare decision-making reports. These might be any kind of report or PowerPoint that goes to leadership groups. Most executives find this process to be pretty awful, and many view it as a waste of time. This is for many reasons, one of which is that they end up ‘fixing’ other people’s drafts.
Common mistakes presenters make when writing reports

* Lack of structure.
* Leader not briefing the team.
* Mixing the thinking process with writing.

The Elevate framework
From the leaders’ perspective, the framework has four steps (R.I.S.E.):

Ready your team. Before they write anything, help them understand what you need to communicate to whom and what outcome you are aiming for. Do you need them to agree, decide or perhaps do something?
Iterate your message map. Ask the team to prepare a one-pager that includes a short introduction, one main message, and 2-5 supporting points. Make it visual. Get the messaging right here before preparing the full document. It’s easier and faster and cuts the risk that leaders will rework whole documents late at night themselves.
Settle the document. Ask the team to flip the messaging into a report, paper or PowerPoint that you can then quickly review for minor tweaks.
Embed the learning. After the communication has been delivered take a hearbeat to reflect on what you learned. Did you learn more about the stakeholders? Could you have improved the collaboration? Could the messaging have been tighter.

Who is a CTO?

A musician at heart, Paul chased his musical dreams in his early twenties while working a bank job. His father, however, pushed him towards a stable IT career which led him to IBM.
