When the Bolsheviks clawed their way to power after the October Revolution of 1917 it was the first time since 1789 that a European power had fallen to such a radical ideology. In doing so, they brought Russia down the path of totalitarianism and eventually a global struggle for ideological supremacy that dominated the second half of the twentieth century. To many the creation of the USSR seems a foregone conclusion... but what if these events had played out differently?
