In this episode we talk about the Black Lives Matter movements, we touch on whether the term microaggression is another way to minimize the movement. We talk about the removal of Edward Colston's statue and whether Winston Churchill's statue should also be taken down.
We discuss the idea that we should all go back to Africa and take our skills and resources to serve our homelands rather than our oppressors and discuss whether we would be guilty of trying to gentrify Africa?
We talk about how the Somali diaspora provides much financial aid to relatives in Somalia and whether we have created false expectations of wealth.
We talk about the benefits/welfare culture in the UK Somali community.
We talk about the pressures placed on Somali girls to succeed both inside and outside the home and how this has created a distance between Somali girls and boys.
We talk about sexual assault in the Somali community and how often the victim is silenced and we try to understand why this happens and how we can prevent this from happening in the future.
We talk about our experiences in mosque/Islamic school and how they have failed us.
We talk about being silenced in the workplace.
We talk about different types of relationships whether it be familial, friendship or romantic, and the importance of building a strong network of people who share your morals and values, especially when it comes to parenthood as it is your responsibility to choose the best person to be a parent to your child.
As you can see we have touched on many different topics in a short amount of time and have not done any of them justice. All of these talking points and more cannot be summarised in one or two conversations and they are conversations that we need to continue having and normalising within our communities.
As long as we shall live the Black Lives Matter movement should never cease. They will try to distract us with other stories in the media or they will try to tarnish the integrity of the movement so we should not stop our efforts and allow them to tell our story for us. They have been speaking on our behalf for way too long and painting a picture in their favour.
Although we have not been regular with this podcast at all we will try our best to change this as this was the reason we started this podcast in the first place. We started it due to being frustrated with how the mainstream media portrays of people like us and attaches labels to us as though we are still their property.
