The West Ham Breakdown
#93 History Repeating
Jack Elderton and Darcy Cox break down West Ham's 2-1 loss to Leeds United in the Premier League. Nuno Espírito Santo took a risk at Elland Road by picking a similar line up to that from the previous fixture, a 0-2 loss to Brentford, which ended up backfiring as the Hammers' put in yet another hugely concerning performance that saw Daniel Farke's team ease past a fragile West Ham. The introduction of Freddie Potts, Mateus Fernandes, Soungoutou Magassa and Kyle Walker-Peters might have given West Ham a lift in the second half, but first half goals from Brenden Aaronson and Joe Rodon meant Fernandes' 90th minute header was too late to salvage any points in what is fast becoming a massive fight for survival at the bottom of the Premier League table. Jack and Darcy dissect the game, discussing the surprising team selection from Nuno, including the repeated use of inverted full-backs in Oliver Scarles and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, as well as the inclusion of Tomáš Souček and Andy Irving in the middle of the park at the expense of Magassa, Fernandes and Potts. They also break down the tactical ideas from both sides, the importance of physicality in the Premier League and West Ham's struggles to compete, how and why the side improved in the second half and if it's possible to find any positives in the underlying data to suggest the London Stadium might not be hosting Championship football next season. The West Ham Breakdown
#92 Existential Dread
Jack Elderton and Cal Goodall break down West Ham's 0-2 loss to Brentford in the Premier League. Nuno Espírito Santo rung in the changes at the London Stadium on Monday night, with surprise inclusions for West Ham academy graduate Oliver Scarles and Scottish international Andy Irving starting the game against The Bees. Goals from Igor Thiago and Mathias Jensen were enough to give Keith Andrews an away league win, the first of his nascent managerial career, with very little response from Nuno's side. The West Ham Breakdown
#91 The Baptism of Fire
Cal and Darcy break down Nuno Espírito Santo's second game in charge of the Hammers, Arsenal 2-0 West Ham in the Premier League. We discuss what we expected from the game and whether it ended up being a case of West Ham playing badl or if Arsenal are just that good. We analyse how Nuno attempted to stop Arsenal's onslaught, what tactical changes he made during the game and how Mikel Arteta responded. We also talk through both of Arsenal goals and the tactical underpinnings and mistakes which lead to them. We also use the international break as an opportunity to evaluate West Ham's performances so far under Nuno, what improvements we've seen since the former Nottingham Forest Head Coach took charge, what we haven't liked as much and ultimately if the switch in manager was the correct call and what the rest of the season looks like for West Ham now Nuno is in charge. Timestamps: (00:00) Intro (01:43) Arsenal 2-0 West Ham review (15:15) The Tactical Breakdown: How Nuno attempted to stop Arsenal (and why Arsenal dominated anyway) (33:10) The Big Picture: Early Nuno evaluations, what does West Ham's season look like now? #90 Nuno’s New Narrative
Find out more about the Stay Tuned campaign with CALM here: https://tilt.fyi/mOy6uJwuy0 Jack and Cal break down Nuno Espírito Santo's first game as West Ham Head Coach, Everton 1-1 West Ham in the Premier League. We discuss a potentially crucial point away from home at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, analysing the immediate tactical improvements in box defending and compactness, highlighting the excellent form of Crysencio Summerville and El Hadji Malick Diouf on the counter and what the match tells us about the rest of the season. Beyond the match, we talk the fundamental differences between Nuno's player-focused philosophy and the more rigid structures seen under Graham Potter and Julen Lopetegui, as well as how Nuno's approach of reducing the cognitive load and prioritising player instinct will shape the Hammers' performance going forward and build new foundations at the club. Timestamps: (00:00) Intro (01:43) Everton 1-1 West Ham review (23:18) Thoughts on Graham Potter’s departure (41:10) Nuno Espírito Santo’s arrival (48:48) How West Ham’s In-Possession solutions change under Nuno Please do leave us a review and subscribe to the podcast to catch every episode.
