We stumbled across the idea in our very first episode, and then unearthed it with its recent remaster...
In this episode, we gather up our favorite songs with "Ballad Of" in the title. Most are true story-songs, as traditional ballads should be, but others are ballads in name only. It's a loosey-goosey exploration of theme, with more than a few trips down memory lane.
Did we forget a great Ballad Of? You know where to tell us!

Chrissie Hynde's gravitational presence put her right at the heart of rock & roll's most famous scenes over and over again. And that happened before she recorded her first Pretenders album. Lex and Dave devote over two hours to the indisputable Queen of Cool, who paved the way for the raw energy sound of '90s female rock stars. From the streets of Ohio to the streets of London, this tale tracks the birth, death, and afterlife of punk. Unfasten your safety pins!

The episode that launched it all... is back, cleaned up and injected with archival clips and new music.
If you've never listened to our first episode about Mott The Hoople or found it unlistenable because of amateurish audio quality, we encourage you to check out this fresh version.
There are a still some imperfections, to be sure, but our conversation has some terrific nuggets and Mott's music always delivers. We recorded this episode at Common House in Charlottesville, VA, and you can hear some background ambiance.
At the time, we recorded the episode with the hope that people might find our mutual Hoople and Hunter obsession engaging enough to come back for more, but we weren't totally confident that we had gold. 30+ epic episodes later, it's hard to believe there was ever any doubt. Thanks for your support along the way!
Enjoy and don't forget our companion Mott playlist...

If you have a knee-jerk reaction to the name Meat Loaf, we get it. Like Phil Collins, he and his collaborator Jim Steinman hit oversaturation status by the early '80s and then came back for revenge in the early '90s. But Meat & Jim's journey that weaves around these mega-milestones is simultaneously fascinating, bizarre, charmed, and unlucky. From stage to stereo to screen, the supporting players who pop up along the way might surprise you. Settle in for a ride that takes you to hell and back... over and over... and over again.

The follow-up to the TWOS "Genesis in the '70s" episode has finally arrived. It's time to Spa-go for it, strap on a headband, a pastel blazer, and parachute pants and enjoy Phil and the boys' journey to peak stardom. Dave and Lex discuss Phil's "cultural ubiquity," the evolution of the Genesis sound, and whether "Tonight, Tonight, Tonight" is genius or drivel. This is a fun one, and yet another epic-sode, clocking in at 2-1/2 hours long.

More about The Well Of Sound on Patreon...
If you like your podcast episodes good and free, we get it. We're not messing with the formula. You'll still get the deep dives you know us for, for free. But we're trying to make MORE of those episodes every year, and patreon.com/wellofsound is the way for us to do that.
We have three subscription tiers and the breakdown is basically this: 1) You like us and you want to support us. 2) You like us but you want bonus content. 3) You're a superfan and like the idea of hearing your name on the show and getting a vote on future eps! These are all great things to be and we're so grateful for your support.

It's been a long wait, but Dave and Lex are back with Part 1 of the Genesis saga. Before neon palm trees and Spago lunches were on their radar, these legends of 1980s pop found their footing during the early days of prog rock with songs of knights, dukes, deadly croquet games, foxes in red dresses, and castrated slippermen. Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins, Mike Rutherford, Tony Banks, Steve Hackett, and more harmonize, clash, and synth their British hearts out across the '70s. Plus, Dave and Lex are finally converted into full-blown prog-heads. You won't want to miss this deluxe epic-sode.

All hail the Basher. Nick Lowe has shaped the course of punk, pub rock, power pop, and more, but no genre can hold him. From Brinsley Schwarz early years to Stiff Records to Elvis Costello to indie rock headmaster, Dave and Lex chart the evolution of the wriest rocker in the land. Prepare for puns.

Time to kick off Season 3 of TWOS! Marvin Gaye was one of Motown's biggest stars and helped bring social commentary to the mainstream with his concept album, What's Going On. Before People magazine appropriated "Sexiest Man Alive", Marvin was the reigning champ. He was also one seriously sorrowful dude. Dave and Lex dig deep into the catalog and troubled life of MPG. Topics of discussion include PCP, the Cowardly Lion, and porn. Buckle up.

Lex calls up shredder extraordinaire Stephen Heath to get a musician's point of view on how Eddie Van Halen changed the game and what sets him apart from other guitar gods.
A little about Stephen... He currently plays guitar for LA Takedown and last year was touring guitarist for Weyes Blood. He's also played with Paul Bergmann, Death Valley Girls, DA Stern, and JT Leroy. You mighta seen him on Twin Peaks too.
