The Wolfriders are not made to sit underground in the troll caverns, they want to be outside to be free, to be in fresh air. Therefore, Scouter is allowed a trip outside and ventures out through the pig stealing hole in the human village. Lehrigens dog sniffs out Scouter and Scrabble and the animals start fighting, not to be fought by humans Souter and Scrabble must get down to the troll caverns again, but they are now badly injured. While the rest of the Wolfriders try to help, they notice some grey powder entering the tunnel. It is going to explode. To save themselves they have to leave Scrabble behind.  Flem is mad that the wolfroders have ruined one of her tunnels, and orders them to leave her kingdom as soon as Scouter can manage. They think they find a safe spot out, but they are wrong. Both Lehrigen's men and Rowb's men are waiting by the forest to attack them upon arriving.  Teir is using his powers to make a horse stamped. Many humans are injured and dead, which gives the elves time to flee into the forest and hide. After Lehrigens and his men have rested up and tended to their injured Lehrigen carefully chooses four men to go with into the forest. Rowb disagrees with Lehrigens ways, he decides to take a couple of men himself into the forest. He thinks he can outshine Lehrigen, but the elves have different plans for the humans and turn them against each other.
