The Wolfriders are still searching for their new holt, but while taking a break from that Ember asks Pike for a new howl. A howl she has never heard before, Ember is curious about recognition. Pike proceeds to Howl the tale of Hummer and Buckthorn, two young Wolfriders who grow up in rivalry. Everything they do turns into a competition, this goes on until they one day recognize. They recognize during a staring competition, which has lasted for days. Hummer and Buckthorn live on as soul mates and love mates, and they get two recognized children.  Back on their wolf friends' backs, the Wolfriders are yet again hunting for their new holt. After almost starving yet again, they arrive at Howling Rock. But it turns out someone else is living there, and not everyone is happy to get to know Teir. Ember decides to get to know him more and goes off to talk with him.
