Introducing "The Trouble with Politics" – a dynamic podcast hosted by journalist & broadcaster Marverine Cole, who seeks to explore how far politics is working for people in the UK, at a time when trust in British politics is at an all time low.
Join Marverine as she aims to shed light on perspectives often skimmed over on mainstream news programmes, examining the major challenges facing our nation through the lens of those who feel they are left on the margins of politics. She'll also be talking to people working within the political system in various different roles, hearing their views on what they are hoping to achieve.
With insightful analysis, candid discussions, and expert insights, the podcast will take a hopeful look at how far there might be an appetite for new fresh ways of doing politics, and what politics could look like when members of the public are put at the heart of it.

Welcome to the FINAL episode of the podcast. I’m your host Marverine Cole and this has been the series which has looked at politics from the POV of those who feel left out. And the election results are finally in: Sir Keir Starmer – leader of the Labour Party - is the UK’s New PM! We hear voter reaction, a business view from the CEO of Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce and analysis from editor and critic, K Biswas. It's a lively one!
Campaigners on women’s issues have highlighted that there’s scant mention of the rights for women and girls in any of the political party manifestos for 2024 General Election. They want the public to act NOW. To vote and to push newly elected MPs to go much futher than those election pledges
This episode of TTWP we speak to Professor Helen Pankhurst CBE. As you will guessed by her surname – Helen is the great-granddaughter of Emmeline Pankhurst and granddaughter of Sylvia Pankhurst, who were both leaders in the suffragette movement.
She has over 30yrs experience as an activist, a writer, a scholar as well as currently being CARE International's senior advisor working in the UK and Ethiopia. In 2018 Helen convened and remains the head of Centenary Action, one of the UK’s largest coalitions of women’s rights activists and organisations - a group of 127 organisations no less. The group is campaigning on a vast range of urgent and pressing issues, affecting over half the population of the UK – the 51%
This long overdue episode is laser-focused on the housing crisis in the UK. Lock in. It makes for shocking listening.
TTWP talks to three people from unique perspectives:
1. Giles Grover is someone who, along with hundreds of thousands of other people in Britain, is stuck living in a high-rise block covered in dangerous, life-threatening cladding, and who's being asked to stump up thousands of pounds to pay for remedial works;
2. Jasmine Basran is a policy manger at the national homelessness charity, Crisis
3. Kwajo Teneboa who's a well-known campaigner in social housing.
This episode is POWER-PACKED with a compelling range of voices about WHY Black British voters are saying they will Not give Labour their vote on the 4th July Polling day for the General Election.
You’ll hear from a range of Black British voters, and a former aspiring Labour parliamentary candidate who was blocked from standing in 2019 for apparently being ‘far left’) – all of whom are disgusted with the few weeks’ events.
Also I went on the road to a Black Voter registration event and spoke to a co-founder of Operation Black Vote, and the chairman of the Windrush National Organisation.
A bonus episode with reaction to the announcement of the General Election - from YOU the voter and special guest political commentator, Esheru Kwaku giving me his opinions on the recent events!
With the local elections taking place on Thursday 2 May 2024, ‘tactical voting’ is the phrase buzzing around at the moment. Many of the top political commentators and influencers around have been talking it. Carol Vorderman, Femi Oluwale & Supertanskiii to name a few.
But what does it mean in practice? Listen to my conversation with the main organiser rallying the troops aiming to get you clicking on the website: https://stopthetories.vote/
This edition features a chat with Vaughan Gething, the new First Minister of Wales, as he settles into the new role, as elected a month ago by Welsh Labour. We discuss all manner of issues including the state of discrimination and trolling on social media, whether being the first Black leader of any country in Europe has any significance at all, and how he likes to relax away from the world of politics.
This edition looks at what happens at local council and metropolitan mayor level in differing regions of England, from the view of prospective candidates, academics, journalists, elected leaders and, of course, VOTERS. Listen, then do your research for your local area and don't forget to get out and vote! These elections COULD be a big signal for the major parties about how the general public will vote for the General Election this year!!
Welcome to Edition 1 of the TTWP pod. Dr Shola Mos-Shogbamimu & Nels Abbey, two of Britain's foremost political commentators, who are also both authors, join journalist and broadcaster, Marverine Cole. They reflect on the rollercoaster of last week's fallout from the comments made about Diane Abbott - Britain's first ever Black MP - by Conservative party donor Frank Hester. They discuss their personal views on the comments, as well as reflecting on the Conservative and Labour party's respective reactions Hester's comments, with an assessment of how Black British communities are likely to interpret it all (19 March 2024)
Introducing The Trouble With Politics podcast. Host Marverine Cole explains what the podcast is about, and where she's coming from and where she might be headed with it. All in the name of British politics!
