Listen to the Podcast:

On this recap, recorded LIVE on Sunday, August 10th, Josh Wigler (@RoundHoward) is joined by co-host, Antonio Mazzaro (@ACMazzaro), to recap episode 5 of The Strain: “Runaways”.
Josh Wigler is joined tonight by Antonio Mazzaro.  Josh thinks the show is starting to get real here.  Unfortunately, Rob can no longer do recaps for the Strain moving forward in order to accommodate Big Brother over RHAP.  They do hope this becomes a smooth transition though.
Antonio says he’s on the Strain Train.  Some vampire killing is what he wants to see.  It’s great that Eph and Abraham are finally getting together for some vampire-slaying action.  Corey Stoll with a nailgun is not so bad.
The Wigler Wig Watch:  They hope Corey is putting the hat on for the rest of the show.  Josh is pretty down with the wig this week, saying it’s worse than it was last week especially in the scene at the end of the episode during Eph and Jim Kent’s scene.  Unfortunately, it was so clear it was a wig.  Hopefully, he will shave his head off eventually.  Is it possible it’s because he’s gonna go smooth?  Is he the character who can still hang on to his humanity?  We’ll see.
Which is a better weapon – nail gun vs. chain sword?  Josh thinks there might be something more about the sword.  Antonio would go for the sword. At this point, Josh is scared getting close to any vampires.  He thinks the nail gun isn’t gonna kill anybody and not a lethal weapon against these vampires.  Josh says Antonio cannot count on him and he might point the nail gun to his head before any vampire could attack him. He would be the last guy you could count on when it’s the end of the world. But then Antonio offered him some pizza and Josh says he’s coming back in without any hesitation at all.
What Antonio thinks is making this show interesting is that aside from the unique kind of vampires which is nothing like those in other shows, he likes how this is being a coordinated campaign to really spread the virus.  It’s planned and purposeful.  Josh thinks Eichorst is not just dangerous for being a vampire but because he has a silver tongue.
The monster thing is a witty, sharp, dangerous-thinking creature as well and Abraham spells that out tonight.
The flashbacks of Abraham back in 1944 with Eichorst there – Antonio thinks we’re definitely not done here.  Josh thinks this is the Chapter 1 in the story showing Abraham’s history with the vampires which is barely a taste.  He wonders if this is going to be a big storyline.  We don’t get much elaboration on Eichorst though.  Although we can conclude here that Eichorst definitely hasn’t become a vampire here yet seeing that he could stay out in broad daylight.  But he could be working with the vampires. At this point, not enough information is being divulged yet.
Josh is fascinated with what Abraham revealed in the modern day that silver affects them since it’s the weakness of the werewolves.  So there might be more in the can here.  What’s for sure is that their expectations are being flipped.
The Master manipulating things as an explanation as to why the four survived the flight which is for disinformation purposes is good.  Antonio appreciates this.  He likes how they are building the Master up into something.
Ansel’s wife killing herself came as a surprise though.  Antonio explains what’s the deal with the silver mirrors.
Finishing off Eph’s storyline, Josh likes the scene under the shed when Eph goes in with the camera phone out and he’s shaking.  He thinks it is so 2014.  That is definitely what you would do in the modern day vampire world.  Vampire may just go into doing selfies as well.  So Eph records the assault against Ansel and it’s a surprise Ansel is gone too soon.

The Strain, Episode 4 Recap: “It’s Not for Everyone”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_gLXFDRfsv0
Watch the Show on YouTube   –   RSVP for the Event
Listen to the Podcast:
Rob Cesternino is joined by co-host, Josh Wigler, to recap episode 4 of The Strain: “It’s Not for Everyone”.
The show starts with Rob asking about Josh’s reaction to the transformation that happened with Gabriel in last week’s episode and he thought it was silly and wonderful.  While a lot of time was spent on Gabriel last week, much time is spent on Ansel in this week’s episode.  Josh is fully endorsing the “where’s the pilot’s penis?” flashback episode.
Eph and Abraham are finally on the same page.  Now Eph’s finally hooked up with the vampire slayer.  Josh imagines this is where we should be headed.  Josh is also hoping to see more of the Nazi Eichorst.  He adds that being a vampire and a Nazi would be the most terrifying combination.
Dr. Nora seems to be drifting away from Eph’s cause since she says can’t bring herself to kill innocent people and Josh finds this frustrating considering that she was the first person who urged the squad to talk to Abraham and explore the possibilities and that she even survived two vampire attacks.  And now that she’s no longer on board in doing what needs to be done just seems weird based on where she started.
Josh thinks the show is super fun, gnarly, and really disgusting.  It can be very funny but it also has got moments of intense drama.
And now, for Wigler’s Wig Watch:  Josh thinks we need to get used to it.  We can’t get obsessed over it otherwise we’d go crazy.  Rob says any time Corey Stoll’s hair is messed up, it’s interesting to look at.
Ansel has been going through some changes as well as his wife, Annie.  He has the foresight to get his wife and kids out of the house and she sends her away but asks her to leave Gertie with him.  Rob wonders why dogs have to be killed in all serialized dramas.  Josh suggests that it’s because we care about dogs more than we care about people so it’s a way of making us feel bad.  A good move to punch us in the gut.
When Annie comes home, she found the dog lying dead and she does this eulogy.  Rob feels Annie has got some mental issues.  She heads to the shed and finds Ansel.  Ansel says the voices in his head are telling him to eat his wife if she doesn’t leave.  Josh guesses the Master can speak to all of them.  Josh thinks Ansel and Gabe (the ones who survived the plane crash) are of higher order than those vampires at the morgue.  Then Trip Taylor enters the scene and Rob thinks this is a little over the top.
The autopsy scene was a fun one.  Eph’s motivation for not getting anybody else involved in the situation is that he is just not trusting anybody because nobody believes him.  The top three things from  the autopsy that grosses out Josh are: the lack of genitalia, removing the six-foot python of a tongue, and fart and ammonia.
That scene of Eph punching Jim in the face is a little weak for Josh because just one punch for a guy who ended human civilization is just not enough justice.  Although Josh imagines a horrible demise is in Jim’s future.  He is sympathetic to a degree but he has to redeem himself by throwing himself in front of a vampire.
Gus returns and Rob thinks he is not connected to anything that’s interesting at this point.  He goes around stealing cars.  What’s going on here? This left Josh wondering although Rob thinks Gus is headed to a direction where Gus would be a part of the Justice League, along with Eph and Abraham.
Gus’ cousin, Felix is introduced in this episode.  Josh plays Ding, Marry, Kill on Felix, Gus, and Gus’ brother.  Josh would marry Felix.  He’d kill Gus’ brother.  And he’d ding Gus.
At this point, Josh is marking all supporting characters on the show for death ...

Listen to the Podcast:
Rob Cesternino is joined by guest co-host, Antonio Mazzaro, to recap episode 3 of The Strain: “Gone Smooth”.
Rob claims this is the most disturbing thing he has seen this week.  Antonio agrees and says it is terrifying.  After three weeks of The Strain, the show is really intense!  There is no place to hide.  Things are getting worse.  The rats are fleeing.  Human genitalia falling off.  Just when you think it can’t get any worse or grosser, they are just outdoing themselves every week.
So we get to see Eichorst in the top of the episode and then we get to see the finished products, seeing a couple characters in their transformation.  Gabe, the rocker guy goes to urinate and something splashes in the toilet.  His penis falls off.  He just flushes it and moves on.  He is obviously turning into a vampire.  But if it were Rob, he would’ve fished it out and not flush the toilet and keep it as a souvenir.  Antonio says it’s possible that these vampires may have rapid healing capability.
Antonio thinks this episode is better than the earlier episodes.  Rob says the show creeps him out and he has been itching even after the show.  It’s creepy and terrifying.
However, Rob’s one major gripe about the show is the ongoing custody battle between Eff and his ex-wife and the kids.  We get 5-10 minutes every week that is totally a different show.  And Antonio thinks enough time is already being spent on Eff.
Abraham is back in the mix this week.  Abraham is one character who has got a lot of answers and Rob thinks he has all the pieces. But Abraham tells Dr. Martinez that she’s not ready for it yet.  Antonio thinks nobody is ready to handle it as of yet since they are kind of dancing around it. Being men of science, they want to explain it away, but there’s no explaining this one.
The breaking point for Rob is when they shine the infrared light over Captain Doyle Stevens and a million worms are floating around.  Antonio’s breaking point is seeing lots of dead people and the giant coffin.
Eichorst killed the guy who’s the head of the airlines and the reason behind that remains a mystery for now.  Jim Kent, on the other hand, has a wife who has cancer and he’s trying to get her into a treatment plan and he pretty much sold out the world to help out his wife.  In this episode, you would kind of feel bad for him compared to the past episodes when you’d really be thinking of him as a mole.  So far, he has let the coffin go.  But it also seems he has done this on more than one occasion.
It’s going downhill fast for the fourth survivor, Ansel,.  He eats the blood in the steak marinating in the fridge and his wife sees him, which is just plain awkward.  Who knows where she will go from here?
Kevin Durand playing the role of Vasiliy  is on the trail of more rats.  Antonio thinks he really is a great and nice guy.  There seems to be intelligence and worldliness in him too and not just a pure killing machine.
Abraham is definitely on the case as he traded the Xbox 360 for the manifesto.  And the first name on the list is that of the guy with the daughter in the bathtub.
The hosts seems to be weirded out by Corey Stoll having to wear a wig in this show.  Rob raised a good point, though.  Corey might just turn into a vampire and his hair will eventually fall out and this makes sense.  But Antonio hopes that would not be the case.
Rob and Antonio take questions from the audience.  Antonio is actually surprised to see the full frontal.  Rob thinks FX is leaving nothing to chance.  This show certainly is crossing all kinds of comfort lines and zones.  It’s brutal.
Seeing the captain’s head crushed and deflated i...

Listen to the Podcast:
Josh Wigler is feeling things he hasn’t felt ever.  Rob asks if it’s normal for him to have worms crawling under his skin.  A lot more gross stuff and a lot more deaths on this episode.  Josh still doesn’t have an idea of what’s going on with this episode.  He hasn’t read the book so he doesn’t know what direction this is going so he’s enjoying this.
Beginning with the end, Emma killed her dad and drew a blood bath.  It’s madness with vampires in the city.  Josh really didn’t feel bad about Emma’s dad after that sloppy slap that he gave to F in the previous episode.
What Rob realized in this show is that the happier the music, the more gruesome the scenes are.  Josh is waiting for a vampire scene with a Lion King soundtrack.  We still don’t know the extent of the spread of this disease so it’s interesting what’s going to happen with the dad.
The Goth guy in the van, Gabriel Bolivar may not be into ruining the orgy.  He seems to not know what is happening to him right now but his vampire instincts may just take over.
Emma has got this queen alien tongue going on which is an iconic visual thing.  F seems to be getting the Kate Morgan treatment at work. Josh thinks Dr. Nora is also super on the ball and she may be a little more prepared to take this thing on.
Things are moving really fast and the episode showing the personal life of F may just be the weak point of the show.  Josh enjoys the scene with F and ex-wife’s new boyfriend.
The old guy, Palmer is the head of the Stoneheart Group and wants to live as long as possible with whatever means possible.  So he made a deal with the Nazi vampire and so they are shipping the monster vampire to New York as part of the deal.  Although Josh thinks it’s not gonna turn out the way Palmer wants it to.
The vampire Eichorst visit Abraham in jail and they have a very interesting conversation.  Definitely, there is an ancient feud happening between the two which goes back to World War and the Nazi era.  Eichorst also talks about the sword and it seems to play a big role.  The heart that was shown in the first episode belongs to someone that Abraham loves and whom Eichorst killed.  It also seems Abraham has killed someone close to Eichort’s heart, River Haven.
What is the master’s master plan?  Maybe just eat as many people as it can and hang out with as many vampires as it can.  Abraham being in jail as the safest place to be may just be sensible.  Rob says a jail is the worst place to be if there is a virus.
Gus drives the coffin to New York and gets away.  He and his brother may be up to no good.  There is no elaboration on Sean Astin’s character in this episode whatsoever.  Josh predicts it’s either Sean will turn into a vampire or he will become a vampire food.
Josh is happy to see Kevin Durand pop up as Vasilly Fet.  He is such a presence in all the movies and television shows he’s appeared in.  Josh thinks he is taking his job pretty seriouslyand he might just be an asset.  He is Josh’s favorite character right now.
Josh is suspicious of the nerdy guy who was one of the four passengers who survived the airplane crash.  He thinks the pilot is a good guy.  Thumbs up to him.
Rob thinks the Nazi vampire is a lot more put together than the monster vampire.  Josh predicts what might happen in the next episode.  So F and Nora went to the coroner’s office and found all the bodies are missing.  They got the phone call from the French man that his daughter has come home so this is what they might be seeing in the next episode.  And they may end up chasing down their next best lead, Abraham.
Rob and Josh takes questions from the audience.

Rob Cesternino and Josh Wigler will recap the premiere episode of The Strain, “Night Zero”
The hosts are just grossed out at this point.  Rob is wondering whether they are vampires or zombies.  The Strain has 13 episodes so they’re definitely gonna be here for a while.
Josh thinks this is a weird show.  It’s unlike anything that’s on right now and it’s scratching off the Walking Dead itch he has been having since the show ended. It has a little bit of a 24 vibe because of the cast. Josh thinks it is a very weird vampire show.  He hasn’t read the books and decides to just enjoy the show.
Rob agrees it’s like a Post Show Recaps All Stars because of the cast who also appeared on other shows aside from 24 like Game of Thrones and Lost.  A lot of familiar faces here.
Rob comments that the show is interesting but it takes a little bit of time to get into the cool stuff by the end.  Josh has got vague notions about what’s happening.  He doesn’t understand why Sean Astin is working with the Stoneheart Group and how did they vampire turn all of the passengers of the Regis flight.  Just based on where they left off with the ending, Josh feels the pace of the show is going to be frantic.
Rob has got a lot of questions and asks Josh to talk him through it. Rob says the coolest scene of the episode is when all of the dead people getting autopsied and they come alive and kill the guy conducting the autopsy.  When a happy song is playing, something very disturbing is more likely about to happen.  Rob is confused if the four people on the plane are zombies.  The creepy guy with flickery eyes has to be a vampire.  Rob is just having a hard time putting these people into the appropriate categories of what they are.  There are some mysteries that need to be solved.
Because people didn’t listen to Abraham’s advice to destroy the coffins, these people are in deep trouble.  The beating thing in the jar that feeds off Abraham’s blood seems to belong to someone that Abraham cares about.  Obviously, Abraham has dealt with something like this before.  We can assume that Abraham is some sort of a vampire slayer.
Josh says he would not be surprised if there are no Nazi and World War II scenes considering that Guillermo del Torro is the director.  Josh is also expecting some holocaust flashbacks with Abraham being a holocaust survivor.
Ephraim or F is an A+ employee and an “F” father.  He has got some ego issues.  Rob’s biggest issue with Ephraimis why does he have to drink milk all the time.  Josh says he’s a specific guy and if you are a genius, then you have to be crazy.  Josh foresees that the boyfriend of F’s wife is gonna be eaten by a vampire.
The narration that opens and closes the episode seems confusing and Josh doesn’t know how that ties into the story so far.  Or perhaps there is a romantic factor behind the Stoneheart Group.  Maybe love is going to be a big theme on the show, being that F wants to reunite with his family and be with his kid.
Sean Astin’s character seems like a good guy but turns out to be the prospect”mole” for the season.  This show is occupying Josh’s interest in terms of the mole patrol.  We have to be on high alert regarding Sean’s character.  Otherwise, they wouldn’t be putting a star actor for nothing.
The big thing living in the coffin is also in question.  Is he the man in charge or is he just working for the Stoneheart Group?  What they’re sure of is it has to be shipped to New York.  Josh gets the vibe that the creature is a valued guest. It may be a tornado of blood-sucking disaster that works on its own.  What the creatures does to Mikhail seems to be over the top yet Josh thinks ...
