Park City Professional Ski Patrol Association - A Group of 200 Taking on Vail Resorts

Season 5, Episode 75

This week, two representatives joined us from the Park City Professional Ski Patrol Association (PCPSPA) to discuss its current conflict with Park City Mountain Resort owner Vail Resorts. Katie Lips is the President of the PCPSPA and Quinn Graves is a business manager of the PCPSPA. In addition, Katie and Quinn highlighted what it takes for the ski patrollers of the largest ski resort in the United States to keep skiers and riders safe and out of harm's way.

Since recording this podcast, a lot has changed in the current standoff between the PCPSPA and Vail Resorts, most notably that as of Friday, December, 27th, the PCPSPA went on strike. This has resulted in Vail Resorts having to turn to scabs by flying in other Vail Resort ski patrollers to keep Park City Mountain Resort operational. This is a developing story, but all of the latest updates can be found on SnowBrains.com.

You can support the PCPSPA during its current strike with its GoFundMe here.

Tommy Moe – Olympic Gold Medal Ski Racer, Alaska Heli-Ski Guide, Co-Founder of Tordrillo Mountain Lodge in Alaska

“Downhill ski racing sure is fun. It’s like being your own race car, but there’s no frame around you to save you. It’s just aerodynamics, skis, a skin-tight suit – zip it up, pull up your tidy whities, and go for it.”

– Tommy Moe

My guest today is Tommy Moe.

  • Tommy made the US Ski Team at 16 years old
  • He started competing in the World Cup at 20
  • Tommy was the first American male ski racer to win two medals at one Olympics – one gold and one silver, both at the Lillehammer Norway Winter Olympics in 1994
  • He wore a Cowboy Hat at the Gold Medal Ceremony.
  • He went to three Olympics – 1992 in France, 1994 in Norway, and 1998 in Japan.
  • Tommy was on the cover of Sports Illustrated in 1994
  • He was a five-time national champion
  • Tommy podiumed seven times in the World Cup & skied in three world championships.
  • He was on the World Cup for nine years and on the US Ski Team for 12 years
  • After his impressive ski racing career, Tommy co-founded a world-class Alaska heli-ski company named Tordrillo Mountain Lodge in a roadless, remote zone in Alaska
  • Tommy is a lead heli-ski guide, and his company hosts some of the best skiers and riders in the world, including Travis Rice & Cody Townsend
  • Tommy was elected to the US National Ski Hall of Fame in 2003

“The great thing about skiing that I enjoy is that you control everything happening. It’s like you can turn your brain off and start making turns down the mountain; you just don’t think it’s all reaction. I’m 51 years old, and I still feel like a little kid on the slopes.”

Bode Miller - The Winningest American Male Ski Racer of All-Time

"I don't think I have a lot of fear. I think I'm very respectful of the mountains and understand the danger that's inherently there. I think I have a healthy dose of awareness of the unpredictable nature of being in the mountains and snow conditions, but I wouldn't call it fear. It's more understanding that you're constantly putting yourself in unforgiving environments. Fear is more of a mindset. I don't consider myself afraid."

- Bode Miller

This episode first aired on February 16, 2021.

This week, we bring you Bode Miller. In this episode, Bode and Miles discuss skiing in the Olympics, skiing on the World Cup, losing friends in the mountains, throwing a 360º in competition, his "CBS 60-minutes" hung-over skiing controversy, the dangers of ski racing, and much more.

Bode Miller is the winningest American male ski racer of all time. Bode has won six Olympic Medals - one of them a gold medal. He's podiumed 79 times on the World Cup, with 33 being first place. He's won two World Cup Overall Titles. He's among only five men in history to have won World Cup events in all five alpine ski disciplines. And he's the only skier with five or more victories in each discipline. What I found out in this podcast is that Bode is a general all-around mountain badass who has been almost everywhere and done almost everything in the mountains, including getting caught in gnarly avalanches, throwing misty 720s and double front flips, and losing over 50 friends and acquaintances in the mountains. His stories are one of a kind, and so is he.

“When I was eight, I was following two local ski bums, which I guess I would call my friends, but they were probably 20 years older than me. I don't know that they would have called me their friend at that time. But I just chased them around the mountain all the time. I watched a guy walk out of a pair of MRR bindings and old markers and go straight into a beech tree at about 50 miles an hour. No helmet. I was the first one there because I was just 200 yards behind him, and he was just exploded. His head was just apart, still bubbling breath. That was a pretty nasty eye-opener. He passed away while I was right there."

- Bode Miller

Bode Miller answers these heavy questions:

  • Which ski racing discipline is your favorite and why?
  • How dangerous is ski racing?
  • I've heard you say: "I'm amazed more people don't die ski racing." What makes you say that?
  • How do ski racers make money? Is a good system in place?
  • I recently watched the movie American Downhiller, which focused on the rivalry between Americans and Europeans in male world cup ski racing. What did you experience in your ski racing career in Europe?
  • Are you the only ski racer in history to have thrown a 360º on the racecourse in a World Cup competition?
  • Are performance-enhancing drugs prevalent in ski racing?
  • What was it like partying in the Olympic Village?
  • Have you ever been in an avalanche? What happened?
  • What's your biggest accomplishment in life?
  • What challenges you most intellectually daily?
  • What's your favorite book?

Cody Townsend – Star & Producer of The Fifty Project

“I shit my pants in a helicopter once. Just like trying to press a fart out way too hard and maybe had a little something bad to eat the night before. We were forced to land the helicopter because the pilot got so pissed off.”

– Cody Townsend

Cody will appear on a new episode of The SnowBrains Podcast later this season, but until then, enjoy his great insights and hilarious stories from this episode, which first aired on 01/13/21.

This week, we bring you Cody Townsend, a California beach kid from Santa Cruz who was the high school quarterback dating the head cheerleader while simultaneously winning the Junior Olympics Downhill ski race at 16 years old and ended up becoming a legendary freeskier out of Lake Tahoe, California. He’s done Hollywood stunts for Vin Diesel, he skied “The Most Insane Line Ever” in Alaska, he’s in approximately 1 zillion amazing ski movies, and he now is the star and producer of The Fifty Project, where he’s attempting to climb & ski the 50 Classic Ski Descents of North America.

“We almost got killed by Vladimir Putin, like truly…we got ran off the road while we were driving down this like two-lane highway, all of a sudden a cavalcade of like limos and army cars come racing around the corner in the middle of the road going like 70 miles per hour. We had to slam off into this cliff wall. On the other side was like 400 feet of cliffs. Nearly got ran off the road and killed by Vladimir Putin himself.”

– Cody Townsend

In this episode, Cody & Miles discuss the best stories from The Fifty Project, poohing in helicopters, growing up on the beach in Santa Cruz, climate change, “The Most Insane Line Ever,” Noah Howell, Cody’s favorite mountain ranges to ski, Shane McConkey, Cody’s company Arcade Belts, being a stunt double for Vin Diesel, surfing, avalanches, Cody’s favorite books, and much more.
