Near-Death Hunts and Unbreakable Spirit: Caleb’s Wild Stories
EP 667: Caleb Brewer | Stick Sniper Archery
In this inspiring episode, host Cody Rich  sits down with Caleb Brewer, a former Green Beret who lost both legs in an IED explosion in Afghanistan on his birthday. Caleb shares his remarkable journey from military service to discovering archery and hunting as an adult, overcoming immense physical and mental challenges to become a passionate bow hunter and owner of Stick Sniper Archery in Tucson, Arizona. From dry-firing his first bow to epic backcountry hunts, near-death experiences like nearly drowning while pursuing antelope, and lessons in resilience, Caleb’s story highlights the power of mindset, community, and embracing the outdoors. Whether you’re a hunter, veteran, or anyone facing adversity, this conversation is a testament to turning trauma into triumph and finding joy in the hunt.

Three Key Takeaways

* Resilience Through Adversity: Caleb’s story shows how traumatic events, like losing both legs, can lead to unexpected positive paths—such as discovering archery and owning a business—if you maintain a problem-solving mindset and refuse to let challenges define you.
* The Power of Passion and Community: Getting into hunting later in life ignited an all-consuming drive for Caleb, but it was amplified by supportive friends, veterans’ groups, and shared experiences, reminding listeners that pursuing what excites you with good people can transform your life.
* Embrace the Journey, Not Just the Outcome: Caleb emphasizes focusing on the quality of the hunt—the moments in nature, friendships, and personal growth—over the kill, as obsessing over results can overshadow the true joy and lessons of the experience.

In this engaging episode of the podcast, host Cody Rich welcomes back Jared and Zach from Montana Wild to dive into the intersection of competitiveness, skill-building, and hunting mastery. Recorded in Cody’s signature conversational style, the trio explores the mental and physical demands of competitive shooting, backcountry hunting, and the relaunch of Montana Wild. From discussing Wednesday group hikes to dissecting the nuances of long-range shooting and late-season adventures, this episode is packed with insights for hunters and shooters looking to elevate their game. Expect candid reflections, practical tips, and a deep dive into the mindset that drives excellence in the outdoors.

Show Notes:

Introduction & Catch-Up (00:00 – 02:00)

Cody reconnects with Jared and Zach, reminiscing about past episodes and their shared history, including bow-shooting sessions at the South Cottonwood house.
Montana Wild’s return is teased, setting the stage for a discussion about their renewed focus.

Wednesday Hikes & Competitiveness (02:00 – 10:00)

The group discusses their weekly Wednesday hikes in Montana, inviting listeners to join for fitness and camaraderie.
A conversation about competitiveness unfolds:

Jared and Zach describe themselves as striving for excellence while prioritizing being “good humans” over cutthroat competition.
They explore the challenge of balancing the desire to be the best with realistic commitments (e.g., family, finances).
Cody reflects on aging and shifting priorities, noting that the need to “beat everyone” fades but competition remains a driver for growth.

Key takeaway: Competition sharpens skills, but obsession with being the best can detract from personal balance.

Competitive Shooting & Skill Development (10:00 – 25:00)

The discussion shifts to competitive shooting, particularly NRL (National Rifle League) and PRS (Precision Rifle Series).

Challenges: Financial barriers (ammo, barrel life), time constraints (range access), and the need for extensive reps to build experience.
Mental toughness: Top shooters excel by making good decisions under pressure, harnessing adrenaline, and maintaining a “state of awareness” (flow state).
Common mistakes in shooting:

Overconfidence at mid-range distances (300-400 yards).
Poor fundamentals (e.g., excessive cheek or grip pressure) amplified by recoil in hunting scenarios.
Max-zooming scopes, leading to hyper-focus and missed impacts.

Hunting application: Competitive shooting builds muscle memory for target acquisition, position-building, and wind calls, translating to better hunting performance.

Practical tip: Shoot in windy conditions and off natural rests (e.g., rocks, logs) to simulate hunting scenarios.

Caliber Selection & Hunting Philosophy (25:00 – 32:00)

Jared and Zach advocate for calibers that inspire confidence over chasing “big magnums” (e.g., 7mm Rem Mag, 300 Win Mag).

Recoil sensitivity (pre-ignition movement) can undermine shot execution, making lighter calibers like 6.5 Creedmoor or PRC ideal for most hunters.
Focus on shot placement (double-lung, behind the shoulder) rather than “dropping” animals with heavy calibers.

Fork’n Chicken – Oregon Blacktail Hunt with Okayest Hunter
This week on the podcast, I’m joined by Eric Clark, the mastermind behind Okayest Hunter. Eric and I dive deep into how the brand began and how it quickly resonated with hunters who are tired of the pressure to be the “best” in the field. We chat about their recent film on a blacktail hunt in Oregon, the lessons learned, and where the brand is heading. Eric also shares the heartwarming and hilarious story of a sleepwalking hunter at camp, and we discuss the importance of creating a brand that feels real and authentic. Tune in for laughs, great hunting stories, and a look behind the scenes of Okayest Hunter’s journey.
Show Notes:

Introduction to Okayest Hunter: Eric talks about the origin of Okayest Hunter and why he decided to create a space where hunters could celebrate their imperfections and experiences without fear of judgment.

Hunting Stories: Eric shares a hilarious hunting camp story about a sleepwalking ex-football player that left the entire camp in stitches.

The Blacktail Hunt in Oregon: We discuss the recent hunt for blacktail in Oregon, what went wrong, what went right, and why it was a perfect example of the kind of content Okayest Hunter creates.

Breaking Down the Brand: Eric opens up about how Okayest Hunter’s message resonated with people, especially with those who are often ridiculed in hunting communities for shooting smaller deer or not living up to the “trophy hunting” expectations.

Growing the Brand: From selling hats to creating original content, Eric talks about the challenges and rewards of building a brand from the ground up.

Advice for New Hunters: We discuss the importance of having fun and enjoying the journey, rather than getting caught up in the pressure to “kill the biggest buck” and the joy of the hunt itself.

As a guy who’s read every mountain man and trapper book I can get my hands on—including Steven Rinella’s new book The Mountain Men 1806-1840—getting to live a piece of that history with my five-year-old son was an unforgettable experience.
But Pete wasn’t born into this lifestyle. He grew up in the suburbs of Cincinnati to parents who didn’t hunt at all. So how did a city kid become a hardcore mountain man, trapper, dog handler, and hunting guide?
In this episode, we dive into:

Pete’s love for the mountains, trapping, and running dogs,
How a kid from the suburbs became a skilled outdoorsman,
Completing the North American Big 10 at a young age with no outside capital,
The power of mentorship—how Pete built relationships that opened doors worldwide, and
His journey to becoming a Montana outfitter and guiding in the wilds of Alaska.

This is a fascinating conversation about grit, mentorship, and chasing a dream. Don’t miss it!

Lessons from Wyoming’s Remote Backcountry: Elk, Bears & Business
EP 654: Making a Living as a Guide & Lessons from Wyoming’s Backcountry with Nate Hommerding
This week, I’m joined by Nate Hommerding, a hardworking guide chasing his dream of making a full-time living in the outfitting world. Nate originally reached out looking for advice on how to make extra money as an outfitter, so we jumped on the podcast to talk through it.
Like so many in this industry, Nate fell in love with the guiding lifestyle after working for an outfitter in Wyoming. He’s built a solid career chasing elk deep in the Thorofare, one of the most remote and rugged areas in the Lower 48, and running spring fishing trips in the Midwest. But now, the big question is: What’s next?
In this episode, we dive into:

* How Nate can turn his passion into a full-time business,
* Ways to create passive income (“mailbox money”) as a guide,
* The realities of making a living in seasonal outfitting,
* Lessons learned from years of chasing elk in extreme backcountry,
* Grizzly bear encounters and hunting in some of the thickest bear country in the U.S., and
* Insider tips for hunting Wyoming elk—especially helpful as I’m planning my own Wyoming hunt this year.

This is a must-listen for anyone looking to build a career in the outdoors, or for those gearing up to hunt in deep backcountry.
Tune in now and enjoy!

Hunting Blacktails Across Four States: Nathan Endicott’s Unbelievable Season
EP 653 Nathan Endicott
This week, I’m joined by the incredible Nathan Endicott, a diehard blacktail hunter, filmmaker, and all-around great human. Nathan shares the story of his absolutely unreal 2024 hunting season—a year that showcased his resilience, patience, and determination.
Nathan’s journey hasn’t been easy. After battling a life-threatening autoimmune disease that sidelined his college running career, Nathan shifted his focus entirely to health and family. But even as he returned to hunting, his 2023 season was another gut punch, with luck seemingly against him at every turn—even during a tough trip to Arizona in early 2024.
Never one to give up, Nathan set an ambitious goal for 2024: to take a blacktail in every state they roam—Oregon, Alaska, California, and Washington. Armed with more patience and contentment than ever before, Nathan turned the tables and had the season of a lifetime, capturing most of it on film.
In this episode, we dive into:

* Nathan’s journey back from adversity,
* The mindset shift that transformed his hunting success,
* The epic hunts and incredible challenges he faced, and

Overcoming Injury with Gibson Butler
EP 652: Gibson Butler | Archery, Elk, Moose, Goat
This week, I’m joined by Gibson Butler, who shares his incredible journey of recovery, resilience, and success in the mountains.
After a lifetime of knee troubles, Gibson suffered a major blow while chukar hunting in Idaho, sidelining him from his true passion: elk hunting. Frustrated by years of failed attempts with internet rehab programs, he finally found an expert who understood athletes like him. Gibson’s dedication to rebuilding his knee paid off, giving him newfound confidence in his body and his abilities.
But Gibson’s challenges didn’t end there. Just weeks before the season, his trusty bow—the one he’d shot since he was 17—started showing signs of failing limbs. Forced to upgrade, he discovered how critical proper bow fit is for accuracy and confidence. The results? Gibson was shooting better than ever.
With his body and gear dialed in, Gibson entered the season with a whole new mindset. In this episode, we talk about the importance of confidence—not just in your gear, but in yourself—and how that mindset can transform your hunts.
Gibson had a spectacular season, taking an antelope, a moose, and a fantastic bull elk that came down to the wire when he almost called it quits.
This is an inspiring story of perseverance, recovery, and success. Don’t miss it—enjoy!

An Epic Season: Big Bulls, Mountain Goats, and a Wild Wolf Encounter
EP 651: Brandon Purcell aka Durango Boone
This week, I’m joined by none other than Brandon Purcell, aka Durango Boone, who just wrapped up an absolutely epic hunting season. Brandon is no stranger to the podcast or to success in the field—he’s one of the most consistent rifle elk hunters out there. But even for him, this season was one for the books.
We dive into Brandon’s wild string of hunts, ranging from fast one-day tag-outs to those grueling, grind-it-out adventures that push you to the limit. He shares key tips, strategies, and insights that contribute to his incredible success year after year.
One of the most jaw-dropping moments we discuss is a rare, adrenaline-pumping encounter Brandon had with a wolf while hunting for a buck in Montana—a story that very few hunters ever experience.
To top it all off, Brandon recounts his most recent hunt, where he took an outstanding general rifle bull elk in Montana—a hunt that almost didn’t happen. With heavy snow and few elk in sight, Brandon nearly called it quits for the season. But perseverance paid off, and the result is a story you won’t want to miss.
If you’re an elk hunter or just love hearing incredible hunting tales, this episode is packed with inspiration, hard-won lessons, and edge-of-your-seat moments.

Personal Agency with Dustin Diefenderfer
This week on the podcast, I’m joined by my good friend Dustin and Nick from MTN Tough Fitness to dive deep into mental toughness and personal agency.
