America's Wild Horse Problem
With news of the U.S. Forest Service culling cattle in the Gila National Forest last month, I felt it was a good time to provide information on the Wild Horse and Burro problem in America. The population of Wild Horses and Burros has climbed North of 82,000 in the last year and current management strategies are not capable of achieving the appropriate management level "AML" of around 26,000. Join me today to learn more about how this issue is causing problems across the nation. The Rise of the Lazy S Ranch
This is the second in our three part series on C.C. "Lum" Slaughter. The Lazy S Ranch was Slaughter's plan to build an "insurance policy" for his descendants. Contemporary to Charles Goodnight, and a witness to the Fence Cutting wars, Slaughter built his ranches in the golden age of ranching just after the days of the major cattle drives. Tune into to day's episode to learn how this famous Texan and how he built his 250,000+ acre ranch in West Texas!

Legendary Ranchers: C.C. "Lum" Slaughter
Join me today in learning more about the legendary rancher C.C. Slaughter and his Texas Empire. From his Wikipedia: Christopher Columbus Slaughter (a.k.a. C.C. Slaughter or Lum Slaughter) (1837–1919) was an American rancher, cattle drover and breeder, banker and philanthropist in the Old West. After serving in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War of 1861–1865, he came to own 40,000 cattle and over one million acres of ranch land in West Texas. He became the largest taxpayer in Texas, and used his wealth to endow Baptist institutions. He was known as the "Cattle King of Texas." The Rancher
Legendary Ranchers: Ellen "Cattle Kate" Watson
This week's episode focuses on a truly legendary rancher: Cattle Kate. Rarely does a rancher meet mythic proportions, but Ellen Watson and her partner Jim Averell became the topic of legend through the tragedy that befell them on their homesteads near the Sweetwater in Rawlins, Wyoming. Listen in to learn more! From her Wikipedia: Ellen Liddy Watson (July 2, 1860[1] – July 20, 1889) was a pioneer of Wyoming who became known as Cattle Kate, an outlaw of the Old West, although the characterization is a dubious one, as subsequent research has tended to see her as a much maligned victim of a self styled land baron. Watson had acquired homestead rights on land with water resources vital to the wealthiest rancher in the county, Albert Bothwell, when she was accused by him of cattle rustling. She was abducted from her home and lynched along with her husband by Bothwell and some other ranchers he had incited against her. The bodies were left hanging for 2 days, and the reputation that attached to her until recently was quickly established by newspaper publicity. Accounts of Watson as a rustler are now regarded as highly biased. Her life has become an Old West legend, and inspired a number of television and film accounts. Interview with Dr. Rebecca Bellone, Director of the UC Davis VGL
I am joined on today's show by Dr. Rebecca Bellone of the UC Davis Veterinary Genetics Laboratory to talk more about genetic diseases in horses, the testing they do at UC-Davis, and the importance it has on our industry. Dr. Bellone earned her Ph.D. in Equine Genetics from the University of Kentucky in 2001.  Subsequently she was on faculty in the Department of Biology at the University of Tampa for twelve years while there she was a three time recipient of the College of Natural and Health Sciences Outstanding Scholar Award She relocated to California and joined that faculty of UC Davis in 2014.  Since 2002, she has led an equine genetics and genomics research program investigating many diverse traits in the horse including pigmentation and genetic disorders. The overarching goal of her research program is to identify and understand genetic variation that can explain phenotypes of interest and those of medical importance. Her research team has discovered causal mutations for several pigmentation traits and ocular disorders in horses including Appaloosa spotting, congenital stationary night blindness, and ocular squamous cell carcinoma, among others.  She is currently investigating the genetics of several additional ocular disorders, as well as pigmentation traits, performance triats, and genetic diversity in horses and is working with the team of scientist working to gain a better understanding of the regions of the horse genome that regulate tissue specific gene expression.  Dr. Bellone is a Professor in the Department of Population Health and Reproduction and is the Director of the Veterinary Genetics Laboratory, a unit of the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of California, Davis with an international reputation as experts in veterinary genetic testing.
