Christopher Willits, an artist renowned for creating meditative sonic landscapes, built the Envelop software which allows listeners to experience three-dimensional sound. Willits partnered with B&O Play, maker of the gorgeous A9 speaker used here to create a spatial audio sound bath for guests of #outposttrade at Camp Navarro.
Christopher is a musician, artist, and educator based in San Francisco who believes that music and deep listening can catalyze inner change. Focusing on three-dimensional ambient electronic music, created with processed guitar and voice, the weaving and folding of sound is designed to be within. Often overlapping with earth-inspired photos and videos he creates, the music has forged a world-wide audience that listens intently. Pioneering solo albums on 12k and Ghostly International, along with collaborations with Ryuichi Sakamoto, Tycho, Zach Hill and many others, has created a prolific and diverse catalog of sound. As an experienced educator, Christopher strives to illuminate people’s vision and creativity in music, art and life, and has lectured at many leading institutions in the world. Christopher also teaches meditation techniques that often accompany his music. Here’s more from him about the weekend and his approach to sound, music, and meditation.
Outpost's Brands, Ingredients, and Processes panel at Outpost : Mammoth. We brought together representatives from the spirits, wine, and beer industries to tell us more about how their ingredients and processes shape their respective brands. In particular, our panel focused on how ingredients and processes effect the marketing of their products.
LORO is an Asian smokehouse and bar brought to you by James Beard Award winners, Chef Tyson Cole of Uchi and Aaron Franklin of Franklin Barbecue. During SXSW, Outpost Trade hosted several hundred guests in the not-even-open-yet restaurant. A Hai Hospitality restaurant, it was obvious that the team had been expertly crafted to impress and serve all attendees a unique selection of foods devised by the LORO team. The podcast was recorded at the opening of the event with host Michael Coleman while guests were receiving their first taste of what LORO had been developing.
Scott Hansen is known as the embodiment of Tycho and the go to composer behind many creative professional’s inspirational background music since launching Past Is Prologue in 2010. Even Hansen acknowledges that his music is great background for creative endeavors as the meditative quality of it helps you work through your process.
A two-time Outposter, Scott has played under the redwoods at Camp Navarro for our growing community and underscored our belief that being productive professionally can be enjoyable personally. Outpost’s attendees are a familiar crew for Hansen, who worked for years as a graphic designer. Now working full-time as a musician, Hansen is still in contact with many photographers, videographers, and creative technologists to create the signature Tycho immersive musical experience at shows all over the world.
Many of the attendees at Outpost are there to connect with “media and influencers” – but who is that exactly? Well, Terry Stanley is one (or both?) of them. With 30 years of furiously-paced journalism behind her, Stanley has influenced the point of view of millions of readers with articles about marketing and advertising, entertainment and pop culture, startups and Fortune 100 companies. As a veteran print and digital journalist, Stanley treats the reporting business like a full-contact sport. After graduating from Columbia, Stanley came up in a world of journalism before the Internet in what were male-dominated press rooms. She now can be found on any given day writing for Adweek, L.A. Times, DGA Quarterly, Emmys.com and then heading over to the gym to teach a killer boot camp. We sat down with her at the Outpost Trade Retreat at The Fort at Mammoth Mountain to hear some of her story and her point of view as a journalist.
Stanley has stayed successful over the years by pitching the stories that no one else was pitching. In her 20+ year relationship with the AdWeek family, they now come to her for trending stories and new ways to connect the dots in the barrage of information available to us all day, every day. “There’s a story around every corner” is an age-old truism, but in today’s deluge of content it’s the stories with quality observations and consideration that gets shared around on our feeds. So amongst all the click-bait headlines out there, Stanley strives to ensure that her smart-ass commentary gets published via syndicated channels and cuts to the bone of the cultural zeitgeist we are all hurdling through together.
Yvonne Cagle is a NASA astronaut thinking about our survival on Mars and beyond. She sees “Earth as its own spaceship, a mothership” that ensures human and natural species are highly adaptable to new environments. She looks for solutions in earth’s natural environment to problems we will face as move out into space. By “mimicking” these survival traits we can design and engineer space environments that better adapt for our survival. Yvonne also believes these same strategies can help us better confront many of the challenges we face here on earth.
