Thoughts on Practicing Openness and the Active Stance.

Among people both inside and outside Christianity, the true depth of Christ's philosophical and spiritual ideas and the implications of those ideas have been neglected and left unexamined for at least sixty years. We are left with a vapid, shallow, essentially dead religion which has no notion of what it would mean to live life or operate in a way based on the teachings of Christ. Today's "Christians" are left grasping for models exclusively drawn from the past. If they grasp at all. Most are content with the feelings of sanctimony and vague spiritual comfort granted by any belief system that claims to give the user eternal security as a reward for subscription. I expound slightly on my own belief in Christ and His Symbolic Meaning and Reality. In the future I will attempt to discover what the implications of the truths of Christ tell us about how we might better organize our world and live our lives. Enjoy!

A section from a recording I made on March 6th. I discuss the origin of public education, its effects on cultural and individual psychology, and the ways it has become effectively useless except in instilling a unified, society-wide groupthink constructed to propagate and uphold the institutions and systems upon which our current form of civilization relies. The advantages and disadvantages of these systems and institutions at the time of their foundation notwithstanding, times are changing. The modality of life has changed in ways which make the flourishing of individual lives incompatible with the continuation of the systems and institutions as they have existed. I mentioned the date of the recording above because, interestingly, I recorded this audio prior to any of the state-ordered school closures we are now experiencing. Families have been brought together forcibly by the direct orders of the organizations I am referring to, due to the incompetence of those organizations and their inability to prepare for and deal with a situation truly outside their control. I believe individuals, families, and natural communities will begin to appreciate the value of what we have given up, culturally and as individuals, in trading control over our lives in exchange for the illusion of security found in taking on preformed roles within a complex web of institutions and systems designed to propagate themselves politically and economically, and not to provide for the actual well-being of communities, families, or individuals. This episode is a small section of a longer recording in which I speak about how we might potentially build a society which bypasses and negates the need for the institutions and gives power over the individual's life back to the individual. The First-Level Problem with social media: how we are divided.

The grand narratives of the past upon which we built our civilizations - religion, law, democracy, socialism, capitalism, the state, reason, postmodernism - have been dismantled. The rationality and the scientific materialism, which we expected to lead us to the final answers, seem to have reached their explanatory limits without delivering. We are left with more questions: what is the nature of consciousness? is there a sensible foundation for ethics and morality? how do patterns emerge in a quantum universe? how does the capacity for experience arise from or interact with an inert, material universe? The world is in need of a new story. We need a new class of people who are willing to go beyond a vague nostalgia for the order and truths of the past and to face the world as it IS, accepting the limitations of our capabilities, the implications of our advances, and to delve into the vast potential which rests largely unrealized in humankind. The mission of the New Illumination podcast is to explore what leaps in thinking, understanding, and living might be not only possible, but necessary in order to break out of the stagnation within which our species has existed for the past few hundred years.
