The Mess Behind the Success - Therapist Confessions
Johanna Badenhorst on Podcasting

Podcasting can be a wild ride—a beautiful dance between imperfection and passion. And it’s not just about hitting record and hoping for the best. It's about finding your voice in a world that often tells you to stay quiet. Nobody understands this better than Johanna Badenhorst.

Johanna is a previous business coaching client of mine. We first crossed paths in 2023 when she approached me with the dream of starting her own podcast. Fast forward a couple of years, and Johanna’s podcast "ADHD Her Way" has become a beacon for many. As an ADHD Coach, psychologist and director of her coaching business, Johanna has turned her passion into a platform that supports women who've been masking and second-guessing themselves for far too long.

Today, Johanna's sharing the real story behind building her podcast—the wins, the challenges, the messy bits that nobody talks about and how she keeps showing up even when the going gets tough.

We dive into how she defined her mission early on—creating a space for neurodivergent stories—and why sticking to that vision has been crucial to her success. Her vibrant discussions with guests haven't just enriched her content; they've fostered genuine connections that extend far beyond the microphone.

Johanna gets refreshingly honest about her biggest lesson learnt: embracing imperfections and keeping the process enjoyable. In the early days, she was trapped by deadlines and perfectionism, but discovering the magic that happens when you allow flexibility and fun changed everything. It's not about perfection; it's about the incredible, messy journey of authentic storytelling.

Beyond podcasting, Johanna has seamlessly woven her show into her broader coaching business, creating programs specifically for women with ADHD who've spent years masking and second-guessing themselves. Her advice for aspiring podcasters? Start simple, stay true to yourself and let your passion guide the way—because authenticity is your greatest asset, and it's what will make your podcast a joy for both you and your audience.

The Mess Behind the Success - Therapist Confessions
Dr Rebecca Ray on Failure as Fuel

If you're navigating the choppy waters of online business, you know the struggle is real. Maybe you're like me, lying on your kitchen floor wondering why your course isn't making the six-figure splash you expected. Today I'm chatting with Dr Rebecca Ray, a brilliant clinical psychologist, bestselling author and speaker who has spent years in the entrepreneurial trenches.

Rebecca's path includes the highs of a thriving psychology practice and the lows of burning out from it. When she decided to dive into the online business world, she did so with complete openness about the wins, the flops, and everything in between.

We're talking about the online entrepreneurial rollercoaster and the frustration of pouring your heart into projects that don't get the response you hoped for. Rebecca is one of the rare voices who strips away the gloss to reveal what it really means to hustle online. She's refreshingly candid about botched launches, exhaustion and admitting when strategies simply don't align with your wellbeing—the type of truthfulness that resonates when you feel like you're the only one not hitting those 'big' milestones.

Rebecca shares how the pressure to succeed led to trying every tactic under the sun—email blitzes, podcasts, building online communities—only to find that the revenue didn't match the effort. We explore the importance of recognising when something's not working, not just for your bank account but for your mental health too. She shows us that being truly real can lead to more fulfilling connections and achievements, and how her successful ventures into book writing allowed her to engage deeply with her passion in a way that felt right to her.

These days, Rebecca's back to practicing psychology, but only in ways that don't compromise her wellbeing. Her books are still speaking to a global audience, proving that we can pivot and redefine success on our own terms. This conversation reaffirms that it's perfectly okay to change direction, to say no when something doesn't serve us and to openly admit our missteps.

So, if you're in the thick of it, doubting yourself amid the online noise, remember: you’re not alone. Let’s keep the conversation open, embrace our uniquely messy journeys and lift each other up as we all figure this e-business thing out.

The Mess Behind the Success - Therapist Confessions
Dr Sophie Brock on creating practitioner training

Meet Dr Sophie Brock, a motherhood studies sociologist who transformed her academic expertise into a thriving practitioner training programme—all while navigating life as a single mum. Sophie's entrepreneurial journey began not from ideal circumstances, but from necessity, as she needed to create sustainable income while raising her daughter. Her story reveals the raw reality of starting a business when the stakes are higher and traditional safety nets are on the line.

We'll discover how Sophie built her business in the "cracks of time"—editing podcast episodes during naps and seizing every moment between motherhood demands. She shares the practical challenges of wearing multiple hats without formal training, from marketing to tech solutions (including using stockings as a microphone muffler!). Sophie's resourcefulness and creative problem-solving demonstrate what's possible even when ideal conditions aren't available.

Despite the challenges, Sophie has not only built a thriving business but also a supportive community through her motherhood studies certification. Her story is a testament to the power of perseverance, adaptability and the never-ending journey of learning and growth. Whether you’re a single mum starting your own venture or pursuing another dream, I hope Sophie’s insights encourage and inspire you as much as they did me.

The Mess Behind the Success - Therapist Confessions
Caroline Burrows on delivering EMDR workshops

A lot of us reach a point in our careers when the need for change becomes undeniable. Caroline Burrows is someone who has gracefully navigated such a transition. I recently had the pleasure of chatting with her, as she shared how she transformed her passion for trauma therapy into a thriving practice, while also imparting her expertise through EMDR workshops.

Caroline's journey is super relatable. Imagine having a long-standing career only to realise that maybe, just maybe, you want to steer it in a new direction. Specialising in mental health and social work for over 20 years, Caroline found EMDR therapy incredibly effective for her clients dealing with trauma. But she also noticed something else: delivering therapy services was taking a pretty huge toll on her. Opting for a change, she shifted gears, moving from one-on-one client sessions to empowering other therapists through training.

Caroline opens up about wrestling with the idea that stepping away from direct therapy work might undermine her credibility. Feeling like a “sellout” lingered until she realised the massive positive impact she could make by training others. Now, she’s proud of how her work influences the broader field, as every therapist she trains goes on to do amazing things with their clients.

We chat about Caroline’s candid approach to her neurodivergence (ADHD) and how she chooses to share this aspect of herself openly, making her training sessions all the more inclusive and genuine. She shares her perspective on the power of mentorship and community, where the guidance of business mentors has been crucial to her own growth and expansion.

Each conversation I have in this space leaves me with something profound, and chatting with Caroline was no exception. Her journey of transformation, authenticity and resilience inspires and empowers those who dare to think differently and pursue their own paths in mental health—and beyond.

In this episode, we chat with clinical psychologist Adelle Sushames about her unexpected journey from psychology student to creator of neuroaffirmative resources for the autistic and ADHD community.

Adelle takes us through the challenges that come with product creation, including pricing and the labour-intensive process of manual assembly. With an impressive social media following, she also shares her strategy for creating content that serves the right audience and her thoughts on using social media responsibly. We also hear about her venture into self-publishing with an illustrated book about the autistic and ADHD brain.

The Mess Behind the Success - Therapist Confessions
Welcome to The Mess Behind The Success

Everywhere we look, success seems to be so polished and effortless. We see the six figure launches, the book signings and media gigs, but rarely is anyone talking about the failures; the disappointing launches, the lost revenue, the rejections, the crying on the kitchen floor.

As a clinical psychologist, author, course creator and business mentor, it might look like I’ve got it all together. But trust me, I’ve had my share of falling down.

When I started creating courses six years ago, I really thought I was failing. It felt like there were all these women who knew something that I didn't, that there was a secret playbook everyone else had access to but me. But I know now that the success we see on perfectly curated social media posts is not the whole story - not even close!

That’s why I’ve created this podcast. It’s a space to have real, unpolished, sometimes uncomfortable discussions with therapists and health professionals who have walked this path. We're talking about the juicy stuff that usually stays hidden, because honestly, we learn more from screw-ups than we ever do from the glossy tales of success.

If you're a mission-driven woman who knows deep in your bones that you're meant for more than one-on-one work – whether that's courses, books, retreats or speaking gigs – but find yourself stuck in perfectionism's grip, this is your space.

Join me as I pull back the curtain on what it really takes to build something bigger than yourself, and let’s celebrate the beautifully messy journey of life and business together!

The Mess Behind the Success - Therapist Confessions
Dr Tess Crawley on book writing & rejection

Have you ever felt that strong urge to write a book, only to be daunted by the idea of even drafting that very first chapter?

I had the absolute pleasure of chatting with Dr Tess Crawley, a mentor and friend who knows a thing or two about battling those writing demons. Tess is simply incredible. Our paths crossed years ago, and she’s been teaching me business acumen ever since.

But there’s more to Tess than business smarts. She’s also dived deep into the world of writing, mixing her rich background in psychology with her passion for the written word. From her acting days to becoming a psychologist, Tess’s journey speaks to the beauty of following your instincts, and shares how her career leap into psychology opened new doors, leading her to explore topics around mental health and later business coaching through writing.

Yet, like any seasoned writer, Tess knows rejection well. One failed book project during the lockdown served a tough reminder: failure is part of the deal. It's not about kicking you down but about pushing you toward improvement.

Tess gives us her priceless insights on:

  • Turning rejection into fuel
  • Keeping the flame alive amidst setbacks
  • Rediscovering success in resilience

Writing is not about the final destination, but the countless avenues it creates. Whether you dream of your name on a book cover or simply enjoy the process of storytelling, know that you’re far from alone. It’s a tumultuous road but a truly rewarding one.

For more insights from Tess and to stay updated on her projects, make sure to follow her on her socials. Keep an eye out for her future writing coaching programmes too!

The Mess Behind the Success - Therapist Confessions
Why I'm Here

Welcome to the very first episode of the The Mess Behind the Success Podcast

I created this podcast for you. The Therapist who dreams of bigger impact...

Your 1:1 clients get exceptional results, yet you’re not having the impact you know you could have outside the consulting room.

You have brilliant ideas, but you fear being more visible.

You wonder if you know enough. (Imposter syndrome, again).

You want to speak up about issues that matter but hold yourself back. Maybe you freeze when it comes to taking bold action.

This is a space for you to share a really warm, juicy and honest chat about business. I believe that we learn far more from failure and so I want to have deep, vulnerable conversations about what it really takes to find success. I'm less interested in social media hacks and your 6 figure launch, tell me about a time you failed. Talk to me about how you used posttraumatic growth to move it through your nervous system, and what patterns and stuck negative beliefs you've had to keep working through.

My background as a psychologist and business coach means I hold space for meaningful transformation.

My goal with this podcast is to help you move from self-doubt to courageous thought leader.

This is a space for vulnerability and connection. If you are a bit of a sticky beak then you're going to love it. I'm coming from a place of compassion for a version of myself who used to think "what am I doing wrong?", and "everyone else seems to have this worked out" and even "am I good enough to do this work? Maybe I'll have to go back to a full time job".

I'm also going to be asking the tough questions - of myself and of my guests, which in turn is going to help to highlight any gaps, challenges or blind spots you maybe haven't fully been aware of yet.

You can learn more about working with me: https://doctorerin.com.au/
