Nerd discussion: Caleb's Marvelous Marvel rant and gripes against the MCU
MCS1 finally breaks down and lets Caleb rant about the MCU. They share their experiences with watching MCU movies and how they were pulled into the franchise despite not being big fans. The conversation also touches on the history of Marvel movies, including the early attempts with X-Men, Spider-Man, and Fantastic Four. The hosts highlight the challenges Marvel faced in creating the MCU and the success of the first Iron Man movie. They also mention the involvement of Stan Lee and the long-term planning that went into the MCU. Phase 1 of the MCU focused on underdog characters and had a more cohesive vision. Phase 2 introduced more social and cultural events around the movies. Good changes included making Black Widow American instead of Russian and giving Hawkeye a larger role. The Guardians of the Galaxy brought together unlikely heroes. The Deadpool movies made changes from the comics, like not portraying his multiple personality disorder. Bradley Cooper's voice acting in Guardians of the Galaxy was impressive. The A-Team movie watching experience was memorable. Phase 2 of the MCU introduced standalone movies that were both successful and disappointing. The early MCU films focused on making good movies rather than just good comic book adaptations. However, some movies, like Iron Man 3, were a wake-up call for Marvel. The introduction of lesser-known characters like Doctor Strange and Ant-Man brought new dynamics to the universe. The Marvel TV shows, like Agents of SHIELD, were inconsistent and marked the beginning of the end for the MCU. Thor: The Dark World and Thor: Ragnarok divided opinions, with the latter making Thor a more comedic character. Inconsistency in character development and writing were prevalent throughout Phase 2. In this part of the conversation, the hosts discuss the Russo Brothers' work on Arrested Development and Community, and how their connection to Community led to many actors from the show being cast in the MCU. They also talk about their love for both shows and their multiple rewatches. The conversation then shifts to the decline of the MCU, with a focus on Captain Marvel and the issues surrounding the character and the movie. They also discuss the problems with time travel in Endgame and the lack of consistency in Tony Stark's character. The hosts conclude by mentioning the lack of direction after Thanos and the introduction of Kang as the next major villain. The conversation methodically reviewed the principal themes of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The main themes identified were: 1) The portrayal of Kang the Conqueror as a non-threatening character, 2) The shift towards a more comedic tone in the MCU, 3) The focus on quantity and content over quality and art, and 4) The controversy surrounding the MCU and its treatment of certain demographics. The conversation also touched on the importance of caring about the source material and respecting the legacy of franchises like Marvel and Star Wars. In this final part of the conversation, Caleb and MCS1 play a game where Caleb has to guess whether certain movie premises are from the MCU or random movies. They also play a game where Caleb has to guess whether certain lines are from Marvel movies or something else. They discuss the rise and fall of the MCU and how it relates to the concept of businesses being consumed by their own products. They also touch on the issue of American media relying too heavily on brand recognition and not respecting the source material. The conversation ends with a discussion about the book 'I, Robot' and its critique of humans depending too much on technology and corporations.
