228: Kendra Adachi - What's our birth story?

In this conversation, we share our intimate journey through pregnancy and childbirth, discussing the emotional and physical challenges we faced and reflecting on the support from family, the decisions made during labor, and the transition from a home birth to a hospital setting.

Kendra Adachi is walking a path of deep service to awaken a remembrance of the divinity within while encouraging connection with the divinity around us. She practices reverence for the body through emotional, physical, and spiritual modalities and feels our consumption is a choice that creates expansion or depletion.

As a certified health coach with the Institute for Integrative Nutrition (click here to learn more: https://bit.ly/36Ctqhr), having completed the four levels of personal development through Integrity Seminars (click here to learn more: https://bit.ly/39A3HrJ), and having the gift of experiencing depression and mental illness, she has chosen to love her unique story and utilize its lessons to support others on their journey.

She holds space for women and men as a conduit to reconnect with their erotic truth through 1-1 mentorship and group containers. She believes the body is a sacred guide and that as we choose to worship it with acceptance, approval, and permission, we become unwavering in our agency and sovereignty. Kendra believes in honoring our true appetite and savoring life, that food is an extension of our divine experience. She's leading a movement where women are coming together to dismantle the narratives that have starved us and reclaim our innate hunger and satiation with our bodies, expression, and primal power. 223: Ky Dickens - Is telepathy real, and what's it mean for us if it is?

Award-winning filmmaker Ky Dickens is best known for her acclaimed documentaries that shift public policy and culture. She’s been hailed a storyteller at the intersection of film and complex social issues - demonstrated by receiving the Focus Award for Achievement in Directing and the Change Make Award for influencing social change through art and film.

Ky’s fifth film, SHOW HER THE MONEY, featuring award-winning actors Elizabeth Banks and Sharon Gless, was ranked as one of the top financial films of the decade by US News and World Report and won three Jury Prizes for “Best Documentary,” including from the Los Angeles International Film Festival.

Though Ky is primarily known for her work as a documentary filmmaker, she recently ventured into the world of audio storytelling with her latest project, The Telepathy Tapes podcast. The podcast investigates the widespread claims of telepathy within the nonspeaking community, raising broader questions about the consciousness and the potential of human beings. The podcast has been hailed as “groundbreaking” and “paradigm-shifting” and was recently ranked among the Top 5 podcasts on the planet. This podcast will be developed into a feature film in 2025.

Her 2021 Film, #TimeToCare premiered at SXSW and then for the United State Congress. #TimeToCare goes behind the scenes with social influencers whose surreal caregiving journeys made them TikTok sensations. Her film ZERO WEEKS (Amazon), about America’s paid leave crisis, premiered its trailer at the White House Summit on the United State of Women, hosted by Oprah & Michelle Obama. Her 2019 film, THE CITY THAT SOLD AMERICA (Freestyle Releasing), is about Chicago’s crucial place in American consumer culture and modern advertising. The film is a sequel to Emmy-award-winning ART & COPY. Her groundbreaking film, SOLE SURVIVOR (CNN FILMS), profiled lone survivors of otherwise fatal plane crashes. From 2019-2021, Ky rolled out a series of award-winning short films about Americans dying of curable diseases due to the Medicaid Gap (CRITICAL CONDITION, ON THE EDGE & LEFT BEHIND). She just directed her first narrative film, IN THE JUNGLE, slated to be released in 2024. Collectively, her films have won more than 20 audience choice, best film, or best-directing awards.

In addition to her feature film work, Ky directs commercials for some of the biggest brands in America. Her clients include Netflix, Google, Facebook, TikTok, and Johnson & Johnson.  She’s an active member of Film Fatales Los Angeles and a member of the Directors Guild of America.

Having a brother on the spectrum, Ky’s been active in the special needs community her entire life, starting in high school, where she spearheaded the district’s inclusion program. She graduated with Magna Cum Laude honors from Vanderbilt University and lives in Los Angeles.

221: Dr. Pamela Douglas - What's the best way to raise a baby?

Dr Pamela Douglas is an Australian GP, researcher, author, and an international leader in caring for parents and babies, with a special interest in perinatal mental health and breastfeeding medicine.

Over the past 20 years, Pam has published the evidence base to the programs known as Neuroprotective Developmental Care (NDC, or 'The Possums Programs'), translating the research into education programs offering a paradigm shift in the way we help families who face breastfeeding, baby sleep, and cry-fuss challenges. Her groundbreaking work is detailed in 30 international research publications and her best-selling book, The Discontented Little Baby Book.
In this conversation, we discuss how to optimize infant development, parental well-being, and grow joy in early life. Pam emphasizes the importance of experimentation and frequent, flexible breastfeeding in the early days and also discusses the Gestalt method of fit and hold.

In terms of sleep, Pam acknowledges the polarizing nature of the sleep training debate and highlights the need for individualized approaches to sleep based on the unique needs of the baby and family. We also discuss the importance of understanding the biological needs of babies when it comes to sleep, emphasizing that sleep distress in our society is often caused by societal and health system-induced beliefs and practices that are not evidence-based. Pam highlights the variability in babies' sleep needs and advocates for a more evolutionary and intuitive approach to parenting that focuses on meeting babies' sensory and motor needs.

219: Dr. Lyndsey Hookway - What must I know about babies and sleep?

Dr. Lyndsey Hookway is a pediatric nurse, researcher, author, lactation consultant, and advocate for gentle parenting practices. Lyndsey believes that sleep is an art and a science influenced by various factors such as relationships, stress, and social interaction. She challenges the cultural trend of actively managing sleep through non-responsive approaches like cry-it-out methods, emphasizing the importance of communication and responsiveness in parenting.

The amount of sleep a newborn needs can vary greatly, from 8 to 18 hours a day, so it is important for parents to understand their baby's individual sleep needs and cues. Lyndsey encourages parents to focus on the present relationship with their child and make informed choices.

58:33 Building a Compassionate Collective in Parenting

Takeaways

  • Parenting is a journey of uncertainty and constant change, and parents need to embrace this uncertainty and navigate it with grace and compassion.
  • Mainstream parenting narratives often create narrow expectations and can lead to feelings of inadequacy and frustration. It is important to disrupt these narratives and find parenting approaches that align with individual values and circumstances.
  • Open communication and collaboration between partners are crucial in parenting. It is important to have conversations about expectations, roles, and values before a baby's arrival to avoid conflicts and resentment.
  • Western cultures lack adequate training and support for parents, leading to feelings of isolation and overwhelm. Building a community-based approach to parenting can provide the necessary support and guidance for new parents.
  • Babies are highly sensitive to their caregivers' emotional states, and tuning into their needs and emotions can create a strong and nurturing parent-child bond. New parents need support and reassurance from a community or village-like network.
  • Seeking support and validation from others is important to counteract the narrative that parents should cope independently.
  • Breaking generational cycles is a process that involves bending the cycle rather than completely breaking it.
