We sink our teeth into “Blood River” 暗河传, the new Gong Jun-led wuxia drama, and dive headlong into the murky world of assassins, loyalty, and reluctant heroes. It’s a split decision on whether the plot has depth or just stylish swordplay, but there is consensus about likeable characters and surprisingly funny undertones.

Juniper and Elle dive into two wildly different Chinese dramas we recently started — the glossy, deceptive world of “Love’s Ambition” 许我耀眼, where romance teeters on lies and class, and the unexpectedly delightful “Yummy Yummy Yummy” 宴遇永安, a time-travel family comedy with heart (and snacks). It’s a choice between slick drama or laugh-out-loud silliness.

“When Destiny Brings the Demon” hooked us with its refreshing dynamics between a modern slacker woman and a powerful, menacing grandmaster. But somewhere around the middle, the drama took a dive into subpar story tropes and underwhelming villains. Despite this, we managed to make it all the way through, saved by a redeeming ending. Take a listen and learn why we’d still recommend this drama and how we think people could enjoy it.

Let’s take a look at two recent dramas with themes anchored in time travel and transmigration. First, we unpack the first two episodes of the Korean drama “Bon Appetit, Your Majesty”, about a Michelin-starred chef who finds herself sent 500 years back in time, facing a tyrant king. There is much to like about the food and the story. Then, we take a brief detour into Chinese drama “When Destiny Brings the Demon”. Despite seeming simple at first glance, we find ourselves quite amused by the comedic and endearing antics in this story about a slacker modern office worker who finds herself attending to the most feared grandmaster of a cultivation sect.

Who knew watching people make googly eyes while dissecting corpses and solving crimes in ancient China could be so engrossing, but that’s exactly what we get with the costume drama “Coroner’s Diary” 朝雪录. It deftly interweaves medical forensics and swoony romance, helped along by an appealing and convincing cast. Compared to the recent spate of C-dramas that drummed up high promise but became tedious slogfests, this romantic, often funny, and thoroughly enjoyable ride has Juniper and Elle hooked and waiting eagerly for the coming episodes.

Lately, we’ve fallen into a rabbit hole of dramas starring Chinese actor Liu Xueyi, and Elle has been a happy victim ever since. We made it through the end of “Feud” 临江仙 and are here to give a wrap-up assessment. For a drama that promised divine grandeur, this one left us quite underwhelmed and hollow. In contrast, the seemingly silly sounding “Seven Relics of Ill Omen” 七根心简 surprised and delighted us with its spot-on casting, fun character dynamics, and engrossing supernatural mystery adventure story. In this episode, we discuss the latest Bai Lu xianxia drama, Feud 临江仙, also starring Joseph Zeng Shunxi. While the show is nearing its finale, we still aren’t sure what it’s trying to sell the audience. Is the female lead's relentless vengeance relatable or just plain toxic? Is the male lead a tragic wet mop or an enabler? Why are so many female characters written to be unhinged? And how will the show give us its promised happy ending despite the pervasive hate and stabby madness?

After years on the shelf, Chinese xianxia drama Love Never Fails 落花时节又逢君 finally aired recently. In this episode, we share our thoughts after finishing all 40 episodes (plus bonus ones!). For all the flaws and nonsense in this old-fashioned story, we grew quite fond of it. The green screen chemistry of the main leads worked its charm against all expectations, and the lovable bromance between the two heavenly brothers brought a smile to us. Join us for a fun chat about an unexpectedly watchable xianxia release.
(00:31) Introduction & Overview
(05:29) Questions, flaws, and the good stuff
(16:04) Favorite story arcs and the bromance deviation from the novel
(21:28) The visuals, other characters, and unnecessary shirtlessness
(26:55) Ratings, wrap-up, and why we're not finishing Prisoner of Beauty
