As I correctly predicted, Battery Day was a masterclass in economics from Elon Musk and the rest of the Tesla team. Chances are even if you watched the whole event, you missed some key points about how Tesla plans to dominate over the next 10 years. The summation of the technological innovations in this investor presentation are the groundwork to a base trillion dollar valuation.
Battery Day was an incredible presentation that came from the heart of Tesla, what they stand for, and what they are going to achieve. In this brief earnings recap video, I will talk over my single biggest takeaway from hearing the executives talk, explain the stock’s reaction, and tell you why I think Tesla’s future is brighter than ever!
Tesla says they had a $535M increase in their cash and cash equivalents in Q2 were raised to $8.6B. Free cash flow was $418M in Q2 with $327M GAAP operating income, a 5.4% operating margin in Q2, $104M GAAP net income, and $451M non-GAAP net income. That marks four quarters of sequential profitability for the company. Tesla revenue hit $6.04 billion during the second quarter of 2020, with about 7% of that, or $428 million, coming from sales of regulatory credits allowing profitability, and, now, S&P500 inclusion.
How does Tesla use regulatory credits to log revenue and offset operating costs? It’s a great question and now is a great time for me to clear up any confusion.

Firstly, there is the basic flywheel of Tesla — a company many may refer to as an energy company after seeing this visual. It is a sustainable flywheel with the electric car driving with zero emissions, the solar powering the home, the battery storing the energy, and the car getting charged back up again in a seamless, undeniably beautiful experience.

I think that Tesla will one day surpass Apple in terms of market capitalization. Apple being the great American technology company that was the first to reach the illusive trillion dollar market cap. Now in my recent video explaining the Tesla ecosystem I compared Tesla to Apple. Once again I will be making that comparison. I clearly offended some of you by even mentioning Apple in the same sentence as Tesla and I don’t get why you feel that way. You can’t say that Apple got to become one of the most valuable companies in the world by scamming customers and making terrible products. I’m trying not to over explain this point, but I think that Tesla is on a path similar to Apple’s early one. In this short video, I will explain how Tesla will eventually leap frog Apple’s market cap because of how they have countless more opportunities for future success.
