This is a little hint for today’s story, an excerpt from the Tell-Tale Heart, because today I am going to be telling you the true story of the 1830 murder that inspired the short story. We had the honor of visiting the Gardner-Pingree House at 128 Essex Street in Salem one week away, and are still reeling over what we saw. So let’s dive in.

Late in the Summer of 1929, investigators in Cologne, Germany were dealing with a mass murderer that the national and international press had dubbed “The Vampire of Dusseldorf.” At the time, they believed it was possible they were looking for more than one killer, as the victims were very diverse and each was killed with different methods. Their suspect pool was huge, with 900,000 names. They had received more than 13,000 tip letters from the public and 2650 other clues. They interviewed 9000 people, and were obviously having trouble narrowing down their persons of interest.

We are coming up on your last chance to use the code TS12 for 12% off select items in our Bonfire store - the last day to use that is this Friday, Showgirl release day, October 3rd!
On Wednesday, October 28, 1981, in Newburgh Heights, Ohio, three young boys were heading out on adventure near a rocky ravine. When they got there, they soon realized there would be no playing happening. They found the body of a teenage boy wearing a bright yellow t-shirt, lying face-up in the ravine, in a cross-bearing pose. He had some scratches and bruises, but other than that there was no clear sign of injury or cause of death. One of the teen’s shoes was found nearby in a pile of rocks, but the other was never found. Once police were able to get to the scene, it took them a few hours to officially identify the body as that of 17-year-old Kurt Sova.

On February 21st, 2001, 22-year-old Ashley Ellerin was in her home in Hollywood preparing for a date. She had met a cute new guy at a New Year’s Eve party and they had finally been able to plan an evening to meet up and go out for dinner and drinks. She was especially excited because she had recently cut off an affair with her landlord, Mark Durbin. Ashley’s date was running late, having been previously attending a Grammy Awards Watch Party at his friend’s house. When he arrived at Ashley’s door, around 10:45 PM, he knocked, but she wasn’t answering. He tried looking through the front window, and saw spilled wine all over the floor. Assuming his date had partaken in drinks alone, and wouldn’t be coming out with him, he returned to his own home. The next morning, Ashley’s roommate found her body, with 47 stab wounds in her head, neck, chest, stomach, and back.

Travis Herold was born near Festus, Missouri, on October 21st, 1995, to his parents Suzy and Coco, who had come to America from Africa in the 1970s. He was separated from his mother at 3 days old and adopted by Sandra and Jerome Herold, who chose the name Travis after Sandra’s favorite singer, Travis Tritt. They moved Travis to their home in Stamford, Connecticut. Travis’s new home was very different from the home he was born in, a compound owned by a woman named Connie Braun Casey, which was at the time called “Chimparty,” and later renamed the Missouri Primate Foundation. Oh, also, Travis is a chimpanzee.

At around 6 AM on June 13th, 1977, a counselor at the Camp Scott Girl Scout Camp in Mayes County, Oklahoma, was making her way to the camp’s showers, which were on the opposite side of the grounds from the counselors’ tent. It was early morning the first day of camp, and the showers were just in front of tent #8, the seventh and final camper tent in the Kiowa unit of the camp. As the counselor walked to the other end of the camp grounds, she saw a sleeping bag in a wooded area just outside of the tent area. This was odd, as the girls should all have been sleeping inside of their tents. She thought it was possible the busses had dropped off some additional luggage, but this would have been a strange place to leave it all. As she got closer, it was clear that there was a girl laying to the side of the sleeping bag, nude and partially on the pathway, and she was deceased.

When a man sold his house in 1999, the new owners saw the barrel during their final walkthrough inspection and asked that it be removed before their move-in date. The new owner and the current owner worked together to move the barrel down to the curb to be picked up in the trash collection. The day after the trash ran, though, he found the barrel to still be there with a note attached, stating that it was too heavy to pick up and the homeowners would have to find a way to dispose of it themselves. This is when the homeowner and his friend decided to open up the barrel with a screwdriver and see what was inside, likely hoping to break down some of the weight into more manageable pieces. As soon as the barrel was open, the men were met with an unimaginably foul odor, and what looked like a human hand and a woman’s shoe. They closed the barrel back up and called the police.

At around 4:30 AM on Saturday, September 9th, 2017, Teresa Martin got a phone call from her daughter’s friends who had accompanied her to a party. They explained that they had left the party because they couldn’t find her daughter, Kenneka Jenkins, but still had her phone and her car. Teresa immediately made her way to the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Rosemont, Illinois, near the O’Hare airport, where the party had taken place. She arrived at around 5:30 AM and began searching for Kenneka. After not finding her, she went to hotel management and requested that they begin combing through video surveillance to see if they could find where Kenneka had gone, but they told her they couldn’t grant access to it until Kenneka had been reported missing. At 7:14 AM, when Teresa called to report her daughter missing, she very clearly told the operator taking her call that something was not right because it wasn’t like Kenneka to disappear like this.

We are going to be talking about two trailblazing Black transgender women. Remember, Black queer people are who we have to thank for camp fashion, reading others to filth, and spilling the tea. I do want to preface this episode by saying that I will be using language used by drag queens and trans women from the 1960s to the 1990s, which is different from the politically correct language we use today. The women I’m going to talk about used she/her pronouns and today would be considered transgender or gender nonconforming, but I do plan on using the words they used to identify themselves at the time they were alive.
After the New York Pride Parade in 1992, a body was found floating in the Hudson River. It was determined to be that of 46-year-old Marsha P. Johnson and police quickly ruled it a suicide, despite noting a massive wound to the back of her head.
