From prophetic dreams to intriguing textiles, Elizabeth Keckley’s story proved to be inspiring for both author and illustrator.


Born a slave in 1818, Elizabeth lived through many hardships from a very early age.It was her skill at dress-making that allowed her to collect the means and opportunities to bargain for her freedom as well as her son’s.
