Ian Liberatore - Director of The Final Boy

It's so common it has to be a running gag now: no matter how many people start off in a haunted house or slasher movie a female always lives. Most times she is the only one. Ian Liberatore is changing this: how about a man lives? Wild right? But wait, there's more. What if he was part of the LGBTQIA+ community? Now we're onto something different.

In Final Boy, following a tragic death, a group of six friends spend a weekend in the mountains to celebrate the life of their late friend only to be encountered by someone or something that takes them out one by one.

Join Anthony DeRouen, Al Omega and Kevin Nickelson as we break down the finer points in The Final Boy.

We Talk Zach Cregger's New Film - Weapons!

Weapons (2025) is moving to become Zach Cregger's highest grossing film against the production budget, and for good reason: this movie is solid! Acting, writing, camera work, music, all high quality. John Brolin is showing us what he deserves to be in more serious-minded horror films like this.

Zach Cregger's first hit was Barbarian (2022) which did well. Barbarian, like Weapons, follows multiple protagonists in a non-linear format. When it's done well this format is highly-effective in keeping audiences unsettled.

Join Kevin Nickelson and Anthony DeRouen as we disucss what happened to the kids in Weapons!

Director Alex Herron Talks About Inspiration Behind Dark Windows (2023)

Dark Windows (2023) is a slow burn horror film that asks you engage with the cast before the scares come. It's a film that spawned from Alex's teen year which he spent observing his age group, good and bad. Dark Windows is a reflection about the choices you make in your life early on, and the repercussions you can face later.

A film consisting of many layers and subtexts, we're pleased to take a dive into this gripping thriller and touch on our own experiences we think relate.

Child's Play (1988) A Retro Review

Released in 1988 during the peak toy commercialization era Child's Play is a subversion of the nastiest kind. Up until now children's toys were largely kept innocent but writer and director Tom Holland had other ideas.

Child's Play was Tom Holland's second directorial effort after Fright Night (1985) and it was quickly apparent Hollywood had an elite filmmaker in their midst. Child's Play would go on to spawn a franchise very much mirroring the numerous ways our child protagonist (played by Alex Vincent) emulated his favorite toy, and Chucky would stand upon the great icons of horror.

The Activated Man with Director Nicholas Gyeney

The Activated Man is a horror thriller, written and directed by Nicholas Gyeney that deals with the loss of a pet, something many of us can relate to. Losing a pet can feel like losing a family member which is why the main protagonist endures a spiring descent into madness.

The Activated Man features some cool effects, tense moments, and good acting, and we applaud Nicholas Gyeney for trying something new with the genre! You can find The Activated Man streaming in numerous places, and free on the Roku channel.

Sinister Creature Con Day 2

Day 2 of Sinister Creature Con was just as busy as the first. A huge thank you to everyone who stopped by the booth, pick up free posters and flyers, and signed up for our bi-annual newsletter.

First up is the venerable scream queen Danielle Harris. A veteran of both Halloween franchises Danielle Harris has starred in a dizzying array of popular horror films including Hatchet, Shiver, ChromeSkull, and Night of the Living Dead: Darkest Dawn, to name a few.

We touch on a few films including her upcoming flick Last Chance Motel, also starring Scout Taylor-Compton. (interview starts at around 00:00:52)

Dave Barclay joins us next. Covered in memorable Yoda photos, Dave's table was a hotbed of activity and for good reason. He helped bring one of the most cherished characters in film to life. His puppeteer work with Yoda is just scratching the surface.

Dave chronicled his life's work in his book "My Life With Animatronics. Movies, Puppets and Beyond" now available at https://coolwatersprods.com/ . (interview starts at around 00:14:04)

Mitch Eason, writer of Chainsaw Angels, talks about his debut comic book which is proving to be an excellent read. Chainsaw Angels follows a popular trend of using the term zombie to categorize his antagonists while twisting the enemy into his own vision, much the same way Danny Boyle did in 28 Days Later. Zombies, but different.

Mitch has more planned for the series, so we suggest jumping into this one now. (interview starts at around 00:24:40)

Our final interview of the Con is with Mike Hernandez of Killer Clowns from Outer Space fame. Mike Hernandez has made a career of stunt car driving and speaks on his work in various films. Mike's work as a stuntman is one of the more critical roles a film crew member is tasked with, and like Dave Barclay they bring movies to life. (interview starts at around 00:36:18) .

The Grim and Bloody Podcast will be back at Sinister Creature Con (with an even bigger presence!) October 18th and 19th at the Scottish Rite Masonic Center. Visit https://www.facebook.com/sinistercreaturecon/ for more.

Things fired up with Michael Hargrove, an award-winning actor of the theater who earned the role of Candyman in director Nia DaCosta’s new iteration of Candyman (2021). (interview at around 00:01:56)

Next we have Nicholas Walls, author of The Butcher's Tale. Published in 2018 and clocking in at 298 pages, The Butcher's Tale is a highly recommended yarn that encompasses elements of graphic horror, science fiction and a dystopian future reminiscent of Cyberpunk. We're currently engrossed in this novel and will have a thorough review soon. (interview at around 00:11:36)

Friend of the podcast and author Josh Hancock joins us next. Josh brings the full complement of his work including his latest The Slicker Man! (interview at around 00:22:28)

In 2001 C. Ernst Harth portrayed the Great Child, a massive display of man and revulsion. The film was a smash hit and C. Ernst's name was on the map.

During our talk the actor remarks how most if not all of the monsters in 13 Ghosts didn't have backstories but you can read the story about The Great Child here: https://13ghosts.fandom.com/wiki/The_Great_Child .
