In 1998, Ib Christian Bygbjerg was asked to establish a global health section at the University of Copenhagen. The first students were enrolled in the 1-year Master of International Health in 1999, and in 2013, the 2-year Master of Science in Global Health became the section’s main educational programme. In this last episode, Professor Ib reflects on the developments of his field, its terminology, decolonization, and the future of global health, including how to combat the double burden of communicable and non-communicable diseases.

In the second part of Ib Christian Byberg's career in global health, he was one of the key figures in building up world-class Danish malaria research capacities. He later became a chief physician in the Department of Infectious diseases at the National Hospital and it is during this time that Denmark gets a prominent role in the international hierarchy for tropical diseases and parasite research.

Ib Christian Bygbjerg was the first in his family to work in healthcare. His determination to treat and care for those most vulnerable took him to remote areas in India and Zaïre - now the The Democratic Republic of the Congo. When he returned to Denmark, he became a key figure in the Danish response to the emerging HIV/AIDS pandemic.
