This week at The Film Club we’re concluding our AniMay month with friend of the podcast Brandon and he brings our first OVA series on the podcast, Rurouni Kenshin: Trust & Betrayal! The series follows a young boy named Shinta who’s with a traveling group that ends up being slaughtered by a bandit raid. Shinta is the sole survivor of this attack and after he buries all of the dead he is rescued and taken as an apprentice to swordsman Hiko Seiijuro (a legendary master of Hiten Mitsurugi-ryu style). Hiko renames Shinta as “Kenshin” a name more fitting for a swordsman. Years of training later Kenshin leaves his master so he can join the revolution to protect the weak. Kenshin enlists with Kiheitai as an assassin. Kenshin gains notoriety as a ghost assassin and during a mission he gets a cut on his face from a man he kills and it begins a chain reaction that leads Kenshin to love and heartbreak.
