
This week at The Film Club we’re concluding our Noir month with one of the greatest film noir films of all time, Chinatown! The film follows Private Investigator Jake “J.J.” Gittes who’s been hired to investigate Hollis Mulwray the Chief Engineer of the Department of Water and Power in Los Angeles. Mulwray’s wife Evelyn seeks Jake’s services because she suspects her husband is having an affair and Jake agrees to help her. Jake begins to trail Mulwray and learns he in fact is having an affair, when Jake returns to his office he’s greeted by a woman he’s never seen before and is dumbfounded when he learns this is the real wife of Hollis Mulwray. Mrs Mulwray is furious that Jake has been trailing her husband and threatens to sue Jake. A confused Jake is trying to piece things together and when he does he realizes he’s being set up and goes to the Mulwray residence to try to explain what’s going on. Mrs Mulwray immediately drops the lawsuit against Jake after he explains that this is a setup, leaving him more confused he knows now that there is more to this story and there is when it’s later discovered that Hollis Mulwray has been found dead and it’s a homicide.
