This week at The Film Club we’re bringing the razzle dazzle and talking about Chicago! We’re also joined in this episode with Sister of the Podcast Beth! The film tells the story of Roxie Hart a woman who dreams about becoming a star and begins an affair with a man named Fred Casely who claims to know the manager of the popular nightclub The Onyx. One night when Roxie and Fred go to The Onyx they get to see vaudeville star Velma Kelly perform, her performance leaves Roxie in a trance and later that night Velama ends up getting arrested for murder. A month later Roxie ends up following in Velma’s footsteps when she finds herself committing murder. Roxie’s affair with Fred hits a boiling point when Fred admits that he really doesn’t know the owner of the nightclub and just said that he did because he wanted to sleep with Roxie. In a fit of rage Roxie pulls a gun from her dresser and kills Fred, when she realizes what she’s done she calls her husband and comes up with a lie that an intruder has broken into the apartment and tried to harm her. She convinces her husband Amos to tell the police he killed the intruder because it would be more believable that he was defending his wife. However a detective on scene is able to quickly piece together something more nefarious has occurred and when a neighbor confirms this Roxie is taken to Cook County Jail where Velma Kelly is a fellow inmate.
