When preparing to start an exorcism session, wait on the Lord. If nothing happens, then wait on the Lord again. If still nothing happens, wait on the Lord some more.

“I know ‘spirit guide’ is a New Age term, but it’s a helpful expression to understand what’s going on here,” I explained to the participant. “You have pain in your life, and spirits want to guide you on how to deal with it. So if a demon comes along..."

Scholars have many opinions on what pronoun to use when referring to the Holy Spirit. Most settle for “he,” because Jesus uses a male pronoun for the Holy Spirit in John’s gospel, even though pneuma (the New Testament Greek word for spirit) is a neuter noun. Others settle for “she,” because ruach (the Old Testament Hebrew word for spirit) is feminine. Other scholars will argue for calling the Spirit an impersonal “it,” since “the Old Testament often uses metaphors and symbols for the work of the Spirit of God.”

Does the Bible give us the space to believe that objects can be cursed? If so, how do the metaphysics work? Is a demon put in the object? Is it infused with some kind of spiritual power? Or are demons just using the object for show and doing all the work in the background?

Everything spiritual is made manifest through science. Our scientific bodies live in a scientific world made of science. Anything that happens in us or around us, happens to us scientifically. You cannot experience something if you, as a scientific being, don’t have some kind of scientific sensor go off in your body somewhere. You are science.

We had to get into some tough subject matter that day, and God didn’t want to force it on them. What was ahead of them was dark and painful. Jesus wanted to help them work through it, but not if they didn’t want him to.

It was like a scene straight out of a horror movie. I dreamt that my reflection in the mirror didn’t match my actions. When I turned to look my reflection directly in the face, there was something like a demonic version of myself with black eyes staring back at me. Add to this the terrifying effect of everything in the dream going silent and my ears ringing so loudly that they continued to ring in real life when I woke up.

After being mocked by the demon for twenty minutes, I went to plug my phone into the church soundboard and play some worship music over the speakers. The manifested demon saw what I was doing and ran over and unplugged the phone.

After hours of conversation about overcoming a demon of shame, something flipped. My participant was there one second and gone the next, as a familiar expression of annoyance overtook their face.
“Why did you just manifest demon?” I asked with intrigue.

Three kings united in war against the King of Moab and headed out for victory. They were guaranteed to win. Not only had the prophet Elisha informed them that God would bring about their victory, but supernatural signs were proving Elisha’s declaration to be true.
But they lost.
In the middle of the war, a horrific event happened.

“Any and all demons that are trying to stop us from talking with the Holy Spirit need to get out of the way right now in the name of Jesus.”
With those words, I immediately felt a surge of energy come into my body that I had come to recognize from many exorcism sessions. A demon was getting in the way—I could feel it.

“Tell me the truth of what happened to my participant,” I told the manifested demon.
“Close your eyes and I’ll show you,” he responded.
I began to feel a tingling sensation I recognized from when I had experienced an exorcism. Except during my exorcism the tingling sensation moved up and off my head—this one was starting at my head and trying to move down.

“Demon, in the name of Jesus tell us your name,” I commanded.
My participant stared at the wall with confusion.
“Are you okay?” I asked.
“There’s a name being written on the wall,” they responded.

We learn a lot of self-hate from religion. We call ourselves worms and dirty sinners. We talk about God as though he holds his nose around us—as though it is a chore for him to love us. We demean ourselves when we pray, hoping to gain a trophy for being the most self-debasing person in the room. We do this all thinking that it’s humility, when in reality it’s bondage.

All exorcists eventually have to face a question: Why has God created a world in which demons can harass us? There are several correct answers to this question, but the one I will focus on here is an answer that has resounded for me.

“I sense the Holy Spirit is singing a song over you. Do you hear it?” I asked my participant, who had been going through an incredibly difficult time.
They closed their eyes and listened for a moment. A few seconds later, they began to sing not just the song that was in my head—but, specifically, the bridge—the exact part of the song that was in my head.

My participant sat there for a long time, waiting for the Holy Spirit to reveal himself. “Nothing’s happening,” they said as they lifted their arms and gestured. “Wait,” they interrupted themselves.

“This may not work when you leave this room,” I often tell my participants. “I don’t know how to explain it, but there’s a special anointing on these moments. God knows I need him to speak in this way to help you heal. We’re going to ask him to speak in your imagination, but if you don’t see anything, there are other ways he’ll go about making himself known.

“A Christian can’t have a demon,” an irritated college student told me during my lecture. This wasn’t the first time I had heard this incredibly damaging statement, which is often made by people who have never done an exorcism. There is no such statement made in Scripture. There are some passages used to endorse such a conclusion, but these passages are more about people openly worshiping demons—they’re not necessarily about people having demons.

Whenever one particular demon manifested, all I had to do was touch the person’s forehead, and it would be in such great pain that it could be knocked out cold if I kept my hand there long enough. After being mocked by a different demon for a while, I picked up a guitar and began to sing a worship song, causing it intense pain.
