"...The false narrative of 'we don't see color'..." with Dr. Peggy Brunache

Welcome to another episode of the Esoteric Negro!! This week our guest is Dr Peggy Brunache, a Haitian American archaeologist, lecturer, culinary consultant, and foodways specialist. Dr. Brunache grew up in Miami, Florida, and is the daughter of Caribbean immigrant parents from Haiti. Peggy found Anthropology at University, and later went on to earn her masters degree at the University of South Carolina at Columbia after having worked in cultural resource management for almost a decade. She then went on to gain her PhD from the University of Texas, where she focused her thesis on the narratives of enslaved women within Habitation La Mahaudière, Guadeloupe, Caribbean.

Dr Brunache now lives in Scotland, and lectures on the History of Atlantic Slavery at the University of Glasgow. She is also a prominent member of the SBA (Society for Black Archaeologists).

This was the focus of this week’s episode as we discussed the experience of international travel and the cultural differences of dealing with race as a Caribbean-American woman in the U.K. From establishing new roots, to the restriction places upon her as an international travel into her new home country, our conversation with Dr. Brenache was enlightening as it much as it was informative to her unique experience.

His practice is strongly rooted in the wisdom of living systems, teachings of Black- and indigenous-led liberation and sovereignty movements, and draws on the somatic healing and liberatory practices of his Chinese-indigenous heritage.

He is an animist, and his work is spirit-driven and results oriented. He counts among his spiritual forebears Austin Osman Spare, Rosaleen Norton, Dorji Banzarov, and Jan Fries. He lives in the mountains of New Mexico with his wife, cat, several dogs, goats, and a mixed flock of chickens and Muscovy ducks.

Our guest this week is gothic horror writer and recipient of the 2016 Speculative Literature Foundation’s Diverse Worlds grant, Eden Royce.

As a Charleston, South Carolina native, Royce is a member of the Gullah-Geechee nation, a prominent influence in her amazing body of work, including her debut novel “Root Magic”. As a short story writer her work has appeared in anthologies and magazines such as Apex Magazine, Strange Horizons, as well as two collections of her work.

We spoke with Royce about these influences, her experience in publishing her first novel, as well as her thoughts on the world of fiction writing and the inclusion of BIPOC narratives in the community.
