There is a lot of popular media discourse about the challenges of eldest daughters, but I haven't seen anything about eldest sons. I have many of these high achieving, responsible men in my practice, and they have a unique set of struggles. Listen to understand yourself or your partner better!

Today's episode features a special guest: Jackie Aston, LCSW-C, who provides therapy to individuals and couples in D.C. and Maryland. We discuss the fascinating link between porn use in men and eating disordered behaviors in their partners. What is the commonality between these behaviors and why would they manifest in similar types of individuals? Really interesting discussion with Jackie Aston, and definitely something most of us have not considered!

People who were raised in authoritarian homes often feel compelled to assert their individuality across multiple domains: hobbies, preferred music/TV/movies, food, what they like in bed or in the romantic sphere, and anything else. They fear that if they try new things at others' behest, this means they aren't being true to themselves. But, this closemindedness stops them from being loving partners, parents, and even friends. How can you balance your own preferences with the idea of flexibility and growth?

Laura How is an awesome couples counselor and coach based in the UK. She runs an excellent YouTube channel and podcast, and I was so excited to have her on the show to talk about sex, marriage, relationships, and life! We are on the same page with so many topics, and part two will be coming since we couldn't get everything covered in one show!
More about Laura:
I read this somewhere and it makes a lot of sense and dovetails with a lot of the topics I discuss. Specifically, have you been thinking your marriage is the problem... but you are underestimating the impact of hormones, biology, and evolution on your "restlessness"? Listen and see if you have an aha moment yourself.

Dr. Rachel Singer is awesome. She's a psychologist in my area and is a wonderful, kind, and intelligent therapist for anxious kids (and adults, and parents). This is an awesome conversation that really I did not keep on track even slightly because we had so much fun discussing our own experiences with anxiety in childhood and all about the SPACE program for kids.

Today I'm joined by two wonderful providers we have at Best Life Behavioral Health: Paula Pate and Cat Roebuck. We do a deep dive into a couples therapy modality they both use that I don't know much about, differentiation-based sex and marital therapy, aka the crucible approach! This is a great way to watch Cat and Paula in real time if you are considering working with either of them individually or as a couple. They are both smart and passionate about what they do. This conversation was a lot of fun and taught me a great deal!

This is illogical. If you want to split everything exactly down the middle because "that's what would happen after divorce".... you've never been divorced lol. And also, this philosophy may be why your kids have trouble sharing!
