Psychedelics, Depression, and the Brain: A Breakthrough Framework for Mental Health
What if the key to healing depression isn’t another pill but a profound shift in consciousness? On this episode of The Dr. Hyman Show, I talk with Dr. Robin Carhart-Harris, one of the world’s leading psychedelic researchers, about how these compounds unlock plasticity in the brain and offer new hope for people with treatment-resistant mental health challenges. From trauma recovery to the entropic brain principle, this is a conversation that challenges everything we think we know about the mind. You can watch the full episode on YouTube - https://youtu.be/P0EDsfPwbUQ In this episode, you’ll learn: • What happens in the brain during a psychedelic experience and why it matters • How the right set, setting, and support can shape the outcome of your healing journey • Why some people improve after one session, while others need a longer path • The risks of self-medicating and how to explore psychedelics safely • How emerging tools, including AI, could help personalize treatment and improve recovery If you’re curious about the healing potential of psychedelics, this is an honest, research-backed conversation worth tuning into. What If We Got Sunlight All Wrong? The Truth About Vitamin D & Chronic Disease
Sunlight has long been vilified for its link to skin cancer, yet hiding from it entirely may be costing us far more. Vitamin D, made primarily through sun exposure, plays a pivotal role in everything from bone strength and immune defense to mood regulation, cancer prevention, and even longevity. Shockingly, over 80% of people have levels too low to unlock its protective powers—putting them at greater risk for chronic illness, and even premature death. Research shows that raising vitamin D to optimal levels could prevent hundreds of thousands of deaths each year, rivaling or surpassing the impact of many medical interventions. With a few minutes of daily sun, the right kind of supplementation, and awareness of how our lifestyles block this essential nutrient, reclaiming our health may be simpler than we think. In this episode, I discuss, along with Dr. Cindy Geyer, the critical role of vitamin D in preventing chronic disease, boosting immunity, and promoting overall health. Dr. Cindy Geyer received her bachelor of science and her doctor of medicine degrees, with honors, from the Ohio State University. She completed residency in internal medicine at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, N.Y. and is triple board certified in internal medicine, integrative medicine and lifestyle medicine. Bonus Episode: Treating High Blood Pressure at the UltraWellness Center
This special bonus episode features Dr. Cindy Geyer from the UltraWellness Center, diving into how functional medicine approaches high blood pressure — and why treating the root cause means looking far beyond salt and stress. In this conversation, Dr. Geyer walks through the case of a woman with longstanding “white coat” hypertension, family history of cognitive decline, and no clear answers from conventional care. By investigating deeper factors like sleep quality, metabolic health, stress hormones, genetics, and gut function, Dr. Geyer shows how a systems-based approach can improve blood pressure, energy, and long-term brain health — often without medication. You’ll learn: • Why blood pressure medications don’t address the real problem • How stress, sleep apnea, and insulin resistance all contribute to hypertension • Why women are often misdiagnosed or overlooked when it comes to vascular risk • How gut health and food sensitivities can directly affect blood pressure • What functional medicine labs reveal that standard workups miss This is part of a limited bonus series spotlighting the work of the UltraWellness Center team, with new episodes dropping monthly on select Fridays. Sharper, Stronger, Smarter: Build a Better Brain at Any Age
Not long ago, conditions like Alzheimer’s were rare, but today, nearly one in two people over 80 are diagnosed with it. In contrast, in places like the Amazon, dementia affects only about one in a hundred—highlighting how modern lifestyle plays a major role in brain health. The brain isn’t an isolated organ; it’s deeply influenced by diet, sleep, movement, stress, toxins, and emotional well-being. Many people who once struggled with brain fog, depression, or memory loss have experienced dramatic improvements by healing their bodies—addressing gut health, detoxifying harmful substances, optimizing nutrition, and supporting the brain’s energy systems. With the right tools, including targeted nutrients, lifestyle changes, and even therapies like breathwork or plant medicines, it’s now possible not only to protect the brain from decline but also to enhance clarity, focus, and resilience at any age. In this episode, I discuss, along with Dr. Daniel Amen and Alberto Villoldo, how the body and brain are intimately connected and how we can think and feel better when we address our overall health first. Dr. Daniel Amen is a physician, double board-certified psychiatrist, twelve-time NY Times bestselling author, and founder and CEO of Amen Clinics, with 10 US locations. Dr. Amen is the author of many books including the mega-bestseller Change Your Brain, Change Your Life, as well as The End of Mental Illness, Memory Rescue, Healing ADD, and Your Brain Is Always Listening. In March 2022, Tyndale will publish his new book, You, Happier: The 7 Neuroscience Secrets of Feeling Good Based on Your Brain Type.   Alberto Villoldo, Ph.D., is a medical anthropologist, psychologist and shaman, who studied the spiritual practices of the Amazon and the Andes for more than 30 years. While at San Francisco State University, he founded the Biological Self-Regulation Laboratory to study how the mind creates psychosomatic health and disease.  Founder of The Four Winds Society, he instructs individuals throughout the world in the practice of energy medicine. Dr. Villoldo has written numerous bestselling books, including Power Up Your Brain: The Neuroscience of Enlightenment (with David Perlmutter MD), Shaman, Healer, Sage; and WSJ bestseller One Spirit Medicine.   This episode is brought to you by BIOptimizers. Why Chronic Disease is Exploding w/ Daniel Schmachtenberger
I recently sat down with Daniel Schmachtenberger, a strategist and founding voice behind The Consilience Project, to explore the deeper systems fueling today’s chronic disease epidemic. On this episode of The Dr. Hyman Show, Daniel shares a powerful perspective on how modern life impacts our health and what it will take to create lasting change. Here’s what we cover: • Why chronic disease today is largely “man-made” and what that actually means • How pollution, industrial systems, and healthcare itself are quietly driving illness • Why medical stats can be misleading and how to think beyond symptom management • What it will take to build a system that prioritizes prevention and real well-being This episode offers a rare lens on the systems shaping our well-being. I hope it sparks new insights and inspires action. The Importance of Weight Training, Protein, and Muscle
Muscle plays a powerful role in keeping us healthy and living longer, but most people start losing it after age 30—and that loss can drive chronic disease and early aging. The good news is that strength training and eating enough protein can help prevent this decline, improve blood sugar control, and reduce the risk of issues like diabetes, dementia, heart disease, and depression. Muscle isn’t just for movement—it acts like an organ, releasing special compounds called myokines that fight inflammation and support everything from brain function to hormone balance. Resistance training also boosts mood, sharpens memory, strengthens immunity, and supports better sex hormone levels as we age. To get the most out of it, aim for strength training two to four times a week, and make sure you're getting enough high-quality protein—especially at your first and last meals of the day. In this episode, I discuss, along with Dr. Gabrielle Lyon, why strength training, muscle, and protein intake are vital for a healthy metabolism, hormones, longevity, and much more. Dr. Gabrielle Lyon is board certified in family medicine and completed a combined research and clinical fellowship in geriatrics and nutritional sciences at Washington University in St. Louis.  She completed her undergraduate training in nutritional sciences at the University of Illinois. Dr. Lyon is a subject-matter expert and educator in the practical application of protein types and levels for health, performance, aging, and disease prevention. She has continued to receive mentorship from Dr. Donald Layman, Ph.D., over the course of two decades to help bring protein metabolism and nutrition from the bench to the bedside.  This episode is brought to you by BIOptimizers. Anxiety, Autism, Allergies: The Hidden Triggers in Children No One Talks About
Rates of chronic illness, behavioral disorders, and neurodevelopmental challenges are rising rapidly among children, often tied to underlying gut dysfunction, nutrient deficiencies, and environmental triggers such as toxins and ultra-processed foods. Conventional treatments frequently overlook these root causes, relying instead on symptom management or medication. Functional approaches emphasize foundational lifestyle changes—clean nutrition, microbiome support, movement, sleep, and stress reduction—as powerful tools to restore health. Children are especially responsive to these changes, often experiencing rapid and dramatic improvements in behavior, mood, and physical symptoms. With education, testing, and family-centered strategies, parents can take simple, effective steps to help their children thrive. In this episode, I discuss, along with Dr. Elisa Song, Dr. Suzanne Goh, and Dr. Elizabeth Boham why a root-cause approach is just as important for children, as it is for adults. Dr. Elisa Song, MD is a Stanford-, NYU-, UCSF-trained integrative pediatrician, pediatric functional medicine expert, and mom to 2 thriving children - and she is on a mission to revolutionize the future of children’s health. Dr. Song is the bestselling author of the Healthy Kids Happy Kids: An Integrative Pediatrician’s Guide to Whole Child Resilience. Dr. Song created Healthy Kids Happy Kids as an online holistic pediatric resource to help practitioners and parents bridge the gap between conventional and integrative pediatrics with an evidence-based, pediatrician-backed, mom-approved approach. In her integrative pediatric practice, she’s helped 1000s of kids get to the root causes of their health concerns and empowered parents to help their children thrive by integrating conventional pediatrics with functional medicine, homeopathy, acupuncture, herbal medicine, and essential oils. Dr. Song is chair of A4M’s pediatric education and has lectured around the world at leading integrative and functional medicine conferences and premier parenting events. She has also been featured in hundreds of top podcasts, print and online media outlets, including the Wellness Mama podcast, BloomTV, Forbes, Healthline, MindBodyGreen, National Geographic, PopSugar, Parents, Motherly, Parade, Verywell Health, and New York Post. Dr. Suzanne Goh, co-founder and chief medical officer at Cortica, is a Rhodes Scholar and graduate of Harvard University, University of Oxford, and Harvard Medical School who has spent decades working with autistic children. Her work as a board-certified pediatric behavioral neurologist, behavioral analyst, neuroscience researcher, and author led her to create the Cortica Care Model, an innovative, whole-child approach that combines optimal medical treatment with the most effective strategies for advancing cognition, communication, and behavior. Dr. Elizabeth Boham is Board Certified in Family Medicine from Albany Medical School, and she is an Institute for Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner and the Medical Director of The UltraWellness Center. Dr. Boham lectures on a variety of topics, including Women’s Health and Breast Cancer Prevention, insulin resistance, heart health, weight control and allergies. Why Healing Our Soil Is the Real Healthcare Revolution
Our health and the health of our soil are deeply intertwined. Modern agriculture has become heavily dependent on synthetic inputs and industrial practices that strip the land of vitality, and the farmers of agency. Many farmers no longer eat what they grow, suffer from poor health, and experience alarming rates of depression and suicide. But there’s a path forward: regenerative farming not only restores soil health and increases nutrient density in food, it also revitalizes rural communities and offers economic resilience. By reconnecting with natural systems and rebuilding diversity in our soil, food, and microbiomes, we reclaim both ecological balance and human well-being. In this episode, I discuss, along with Allen Williams, Dr. Daphne Miller, and Ian Somerhalder the many facets of modern-day farming, including what we need to pay attention to and why we need to reclaim our soil. Allen Williams is a founding partner of Understanding Ag, LLC and the Soil Health Academy, and is a partner in Joyce Farms, Inc. He has consulted with more than 4,000 farmers and ranchers in the US and other countries, on operations ranging from a few acres to over 1 million acres. Allen and his partners pioneered many of the early regenerative agriculture principles and practices and now teach those to farmers globally. He is a “recovering academic,” having served 15 years on the faculty at Louisiana Tech University and Mississippi State University teaching genetics and physiology. Allen has been featured in the Carbon Nation film series, Soil Carbon Cowboys, on the Dr. Oz show, ABC Food Forecast News, and in Kiss The Ground, A Regenerative Secret, The Farmer’s Footprint film series, and the Sacred Cow film series.  Dr. Daphne Miller is a practicing family physician, Clinical Professor at the University of California San Francisco, and Founder of the Health from the Soil Up Initiative. She is the author of two books: The Jungle Effect: Healthiest Diets from Around the World and Farmacology: Total Health from the Soil Up. A pioneer in the “Healthy Parks, Healthy People” initiative, Miller helped build linkages between our medical system and our park system and writes her patients “park prescriptions” to get outdoors. She also developed a soil learning lab for health professionals at Paicines Ranch in Hollister California. Ian Somerhalder is an American actor, philanthropist, and entrepreneur. Best known for his iconic roles on "Lost" and "The Vampire Diaries," he is co-founder of The Absorption Company (a revolutionary supplement company formulated for increased absorption) and co-owner of Brother's Bond Bourbon. His recent work includes executive producing the documentary "Common Ground" (2023), which highlights regenerative agriculture's innovative solutions to combat climate change. Healing Autoimmunity from the Inside Out, What Most Doctors Miss
Autoimmune disease is explored as a complex and rising health challenge driven largely by lifestyle and environmental factors rather than genetics alone. Conventional treatments often rely on immune-suppressing medications that manage symptoms but fail to address underlying causes like gut dysfunction, chronic infections, toxins, and stress. A functional medicine approach instead emphasizes identifying and treating these root causes—such as gluten sensitivity, dysbiosis, and nutrient deficiencies—through personalized diagnostics and anti-inflammatory diets. Case studies illustrate dramatic improvements in patients' symptoms and lab results when switching from conventional to root-cause-based care. Ultimately, this integrative model empowers individuals to reclaim health by addressing what triggers immune system dysfunction in the first place. In this episode, I discuss, along with Dr. Sunjya Schweig, Dr. Cindy Geyer, and Dr. Todd LePine the root cause approach to healing autoimmune conditions. Dr. Sunjya K. Schweig is dedicated to advancing data-driven approaches to prevent and reverse chronic illness. He is the Founder and President of the California Center for Functional Medicine (CCFM), where he and his team deliver personalized, precision care using innovative technology and a comprehensive team-based model. Since 2016, CCFM has also supported first responders through specialized wellness programs. In 2021, Dr. Schweig launched the Functional Medicine Research and Technology Center to further research, education, and innovation in chronic disease prevention. A graduate of UC Berkeley, he earned his MD from UC Irvine and completed his residency at UCSF Santa Rosa. He is board-certified in family practice and integrative and holistic medicine. Dr. Todd LePine graduated from Dartmouth Medical School and is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, specializing in Integrative Functional Medicine. He is an Institute for Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner. Prior to joining The UltraWellness Center, he worked as a physician at Canyon Ranch in Lenox, MA, for 10 years. Dr. LePine’s focus at The UltraWellness Center is to help his patients achieve optimal health and vitality by restoring the natural balance to both the mind and the body. His areas of interest include optimal aging, bio-detoxification, functional gastrointestinal health, systemic inflammation, autoimmune disorders, and the neurobiology of mood and cognitive disorders. Dr. LePine enjoys skiing, kayaking, hiking, camping, and golfing in the beautiful Berkshires, and is a fitness enthusiast. This episode is brought to you by BIOptimizers. Jeff Bland (Part 2): The Science of Immune Aging—and How to Reverse It
Dr. Jeff Bland has been a guiding force in my life—and in the world of Functional Medicine. For decades, his work has helped shift medicine away from naming and blaming disease, toward truly understanding and addressing its root causes. In this episode of The Dr. Hyman Show, Jeff and I continue our conversation about how to turn the tide on chronic disease—starting with the immune system. We discuss: • How aging quietly weakens your immune system—and why you don’t have to accept it • How phytochemicals act as gene regulators—not just antioxidants • Why your diet might be accelerating immune dysfunction (and how to fix it) • Why Himalayan Tartary Buckwheat may be the most powerful food you’re not eating (yet) • What it means to rejuvenate your immune system—and how to start doing it today This conversation is personal for both of us—and a powerful reminder that when we care for the body, it has an incredible capacity to heal. The 5R Protocol That’s Helping People Reverse Disease Naturally
Many chronic health conditions—such as IBS, asthma, and autoimmune disorders—can be traced back to imbalances in the gut. Disruptions to the microbiome caused by antibiotics, poor diet, food sensitivities, and environmental exposures can lead to inflammation, malabsorption, and increased intestinal permeability (leaky gut). Addressing gut health through a structured Functional Medicine approach called the 5R’s of gut repair—removing harmful triggers, replacing missing digestive factors, reinoculating with beneficial bacteria, repairing the gut lining, and rebalancing lifestyle factors—can restore balance and improve systemic health.  In this episode, I discuss, along with Dr. Elizabeth Boham and Raja Dhir, the Functional Medicine approach to healing the gut and why the gut is at the center of imbalances in the body, including many health conditions. She is on the faculty for the Institute for Functional Medicine. Raja Dhir is the co-founder and co-CEO of Seed Health, a microbiome science company developing innovative probiotics and living medicines to advance human and planetary health. He specializes in translating cutting-edge microbial research into impactful products and leads Seed Health’s academic collaborations with institutions such as MIT, Harvard, Stanford, Caltech, and the NIH. Raja co-chairs Seed’s Scientific Board alongside Dr. Jacques Ravel, guiding research across microbiology, immunology, genetics, and ecology. He also directs LUCA Biologics, a company focused on the vaginal microbiome and women's health, and oversees SeedLabs, which drives environmental initiatives. Through this work, Raja plays a key role in accelerating microbiome-based solutions from discovery to market. This episode is brought to you by BIOptimizers. Why Your Skin Is Begging You to Heal Your Gut First
Skin issues like acne, eczema, and rosacea are deeply connected to internal imbalances, especially those originating in the gut. It is important to explore diet—particularly sugar, refined carbs, and dairy—because it can drive inflammation, insulin resistance, and hormonal disruption, all of which contribute to poor skin health. Topical treatments and antibiotics may provide short-term relief, but they often disrupt the skin and gut microbiome, worsening conditions over time. A Functional Medicine approach focuses on restoring gut balance, identifying food sensitivities, and supporting detoxification pathways with nutrient-dense foods, supplements, and lifestyle practices. Addressing the root causes not only improves skin but also promotes systemic healing and resilience. In this episode, I speak with three of our doctors at The UltraWellness Center—Dr. Elizabeth Boham, Dr. Cindy Geyer, and Dr. Todd LePine—about why, when it comes to skin care, we need to look inside the body first. She is on the faculty for the Institute for Functional Medicine.
