The Don’t Knock It Podcast encourages its listeners to embrace the common phrase “don’t knock it til you’ve tried it”, when presented with biblical truth. In other words, don’t refuse to try, consider, or accept biblical Christianity without first “tasting” and “seeing” that the Lord is good (Psalm 34:8). 64. What Forgiveness Looks Like After the Unthinkable with Harmoni Shelley

This episode contains discussion about a suicide attempt and the impact it had on a family. Listener discretion is advised. If this topic feels too heavy, we encourage you to pause or listen later with a parent or trusted adult. Remember, if you or someone you know is struggling, you can always reach out to a trusted adult or dial 988 for the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.

Today’s episode is ultimately about God’s hope and redemption—even in our darkest moments.

I’m joined by one of my former students, Harmoni Shelley, a current senior at Hillcrest Christian School, who courageously shares her family’s story of pain, healing, and faith. At just ten years old, Harmoni experienced one of the most traumatic moments imaginable—a suicide attempt by her father—and yet, through it, she discovered the living reality of God’s grace and presence.

What began as confusion and anger became a journey toward forgiveness, compassion, and deep faith. Harmoni walks us through how God used what once felt like a story of shame and despair to reveal Himself as Savior, Healer, and Father.

Together, we talk about:

  • How God saved her father’s life in a miraculous way
  • What forgiveness and emotional healing look like over time
  • How her family has grown closer through transparency and grace
  • The hope she now carries into her future as she prepares to graduate and step into adulthood

This conversation reminds us that even when life feels beyond repair, God is still writing stories of restoration.

🎧 Listen to the Extended Cut (Spotify Exclusive):

Subscribers get access to the full, uncut version of this conversation—where we go deeper into how Harmoni’s character has changed throughout high school, what it means to be a “pick me” girl, and how the Lord could transform young girls who are stuck in that particular identity.

63. Not Just a Dad, But a Disciple: How Fatherhood Became My Calling

In this solo episode, I open up about what it truly means to be a present father—and how one moment in the hospital recovery room changed everything for me. From the first day of my daughter’s life, God gave me a deep sense of calling and freedom: the freedom to be there, to show up, and to love consistently in a world that often celebrates absence.

This episode is personal, raw, and reflective—part story, part conviction. I talk about how fatherhood reshaped my priorities, exposed my pride, and taught me that real strength comes from presence, not perfection.

If you’ve ever wrestled with what it means to be a faithful dad, or you’re longing to break cycles of absence and lead your family with grace and conviction, this one’s for you.

What You’ll Hear in This Episode:

  • The defining moment in the hospital recovery room that changed everything
  • What it means to walk in the freedom of being a present father
  • How fatherhood became a daily act of discipleship and surrender
  • Why presence matters more than performance

Stay Tuned for the Extended Cut:

In the next exclusive extended episode, I’ll be diving into Christian nationalism, Charlie Kirk, and the importance of Christian testimony—and how all of it ties back to living faithfully as a believer in today’s culture.

62. Youth Group, Worship Team & Reformed Theology: A Journey with Jonathan Maccarone

In this episode, I sit down with my friend Jonathan Maccarone to hear how the Lord captured his heart in the most unexpected way—through a youth group that, at first glance, wasn’t appealing at all. What drew him in wasn’t the games or the retreats, but the depth of Scripture in the lives of the students and the mentorship of his youth pastor, Joshua Camper.

Jonathan shares how picking up the cajon eventually led him to the drums, giving him his first opportunity to serve on the worship team. Along the way, he also talks about how being introduced to reformed theology challenged him to think deeply about God’s Word and reshaped his walk with Christ.

If you’ve ever doubted whether God can use simple things like retreats, youth leaders, or even a cajon to transform a life, Jonathan’s story will remind you of the power of Scripture and the faithfulness of God.

What You’ll Hear in This Episode:

  • How an unappealing youth group and its retreats became the place God drew Jonathan in
  • The mentorship of Pastor Joshua Camper and the role it played in his spiritual growth
  • How playing the cajon and drums became an on-ramp to worship ministry
  • The introduction of reformed theology into his journey of faith

In this heartfelt conversation, I sit down with my wife Karalyn Ramirez to explore her unique journey growing up homeschooled, how that shaped her social world, and the unexpected ways it intersected with her passion for competitive ice skating. We talk about the challenges and blessings of navigating friendships in that season, the discipline and pressure of life on the rink, and how both worlds prepared her for deeper life lessons.

We also dive into her love for photography—not just as an art form, but as a spiritual crucible that tested, refined, and strengthened her faith. From moments of creative joy to seasons of doubt, she shares how seeing life through the lens helped her see God more clearly.

From early exposure to drugs in middle school to a spiral of teenage rebellion, Dillon’s story is raw—but redemptive.

57. Middle School? with Berlyn Santiago, Sawyer Rawls, & Christian Espinoza

Can the Gospel Transform…Middle Schoolers?

Middle school can feel like a war zone—awkward transitions, unspoken pressures, and a deep longing to belong. In this episode, I sit down with three honest, funny, and wise-beyond-their-years middle school guests (Berlyn Santiago, Sawyer Rawls, and Christian Espinoza) to explore a raw and rarely asked question: Can the gospel really transform this part of life?

From silent battles with anxiety to the struggle of being misunderstood by adults, from hallway drama to hope in Jesus, these students give us a front-row seat to what it’s like to live out the gospel in one of the most misunderstood seasons of life.

Together, we ask:

  • What do middle schoolers wish adults really understood?
  • Where do things feel too messy or broken for God to fix?
  • What would it look like if Jesus showed up in their school?
  • Is the Church missing something when it comes to reaching the next generation?

This episode isn’t about preaching at middle schoolers—it’s about listening to them. And through their words, we’re reminded that the gospel isn’t just good news for grown-ups—it’s good news for everyone. Even now. Even here. Even in middle school.

The Don’t Knock It Podcast
Season 6 Teaser (Can the Gospel Transform?)
SEASON 6! This season, for every episode, my guests and I will be answering one question: CAN THE GOSPEL TRANSFORM? We will be exploring topics, groups of people, or particular institutions that seem irreparable. Too far gone. Too difficult and painful to be redeemed and salvaged. Groups that have come to the point where God seems too small to heal their past, their present, and/or their pain. Those groups or individuals that cause the Church to think, “God what about them? What about that? Are you able to redeem that situation? Those thoughts? That broken heart? If so, where in the world could we start?” Behind every so-called hot topic, there is a person or group that has been saved by Christ, and they are searching for wisdom on how to view their current experience, their area of expertise, or their past in a way that honors the Lord. These topics sometimes become polarizing talking points by preachers from the pulpit, which leave whole communities in confusion about how to move forward. In addition to all of that, 👇🏽 There is an attitude of hopelessness and pessimism going around, mostly out in the world, but I’ve noticed it coming out in the Church as well, and not from everyone nor in every space, but there is this growing sense of things becoming more and more irreconcilable, so much so, that it seems like the only way to handle these people and institutions, is to get rid of them altogether, gaslight them into non-existence, and start from scratch. Season 6 is meant to resist that urge to do away with all the hard stuff. To lean into conversations about healing and restoration. To give those who are asking legitimate questions….gospel-saturated, and hope-filled answers. Not just to read more, pray more, and go to church more often, but to embrace Jesus’ call to ABIDE. BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY. AT ALL COSTS. CAN THE GOSPEL TRANSFORM? Welcome to Season 6 of the Don’t Knock It Podcast!

50. Ch 15 — The Resurrection with Jonathan Maccarone

This season I am walking through the Apostle Paul’s 1st letter to the church in Corinth (1 Corinthians), and I invited one of my best friends, Jonathan Maccarone, to help me unpack the glorious truths of the Resurrection. The Resurrection of Jesus Christ is only really talked about around Easter time, but did you know that it should dominate our every thought and act of service done in the name of our Lord? Everything we do as believers should be grounded in the hope of our future Resurrection, because if it wasn't for Jesus' Resurrection, we are the most to be pitied; our entire faith-driven lives turn out to be of no value. This season I am walking through the Apostle Paul’s 1st letter to the church in Corinth (1 Corinthians), and I invited Renz Ignacio (a previous guest who covered chapter 12), to help me conclude Paul’s conversation on the use of spiritual gifts. In this episode, we discuss the significance of Paul mentioning the gift of prophecy to be more desirable than the gift of tongues. Renz provides some helpful insight on how the gift of prophecy is closely tied to the preaching of God’s Word. Which leads us to the conversation about women in ministry; namely, Paul’s statement about women being silent in the church.
