The DFO Rundown
How close are the Habs to contending? PLUS: A Full Free Agency Recap

Today on the DFO Rundown, Jason Gregor was joined by Jeff Marek from The Sheet to recap everything we’ve seen over the last 72 hours in the NHL.

There were some big contracts handed out as the free agency window opened and usually, this is the time of the year where big mistakes are made. The guys started today’s podcast by talking about one team that they think really improved themselves this summer: the Montreal Canadiens.

Are they good enough to be a team that wins playoff rounds next year? They discussed it.

From there, they talked about the moves that the Anaheim Ducks made so far this summer. They brought in some veterans in Chris Krieder and Mikael Granlund and while they moved on from Trevor Zegras, it’s easy to see a path to the Ducks improving.

They then talked about the Mitch Marner saga and him officially becoming a member of the Vegas Golden Knights. Should Vegas be considered the favourites in the West? They also touched on the way the Maple Leafs handled the situation and the Florida Panthers finding a way to keep all their free agents around.

Tyler then popped in for Buy or Sell where he asked about the Ken Holland’s moves with the Kings, the bottom-five teams in the league and the remaining free agents on the board.

They wrapped up the show by talking about James Reimer and some of the names still out on the market, the impact some of the new Head Coaches around the league could have and the state of the Dallas Stars after the hiring of Glen Gulutzan.

1:10 - How much better are the Habs?

8:30 - Are the Ducks good enough?

15:40 - Marner & the Golden Knights

23:00 - The Leafs rebound

27:30 - Bennett & the Panthers

33:10 - Buy or Sell

50:00 - The new coaches

52:00 - Stars hire Gulutzan

The DFO Rundown
Breaking Down Draft Weekend & Previewing Free Agency with Chris Pronger

The DFO Rundown is back and with draft weekend in the rear view mirror and free agency opening up tomorrow, there was no shortage of talking points for Jason Gregor. He began the show by going through a little bit of what we saw over the last 72 hours in the league from the Islanders picking first overall to some of the big extensions that were signed.

Jason was then joined by guest co-host Chris Pronger. The Hall of Fame defenseman talked about the end of his career when he was trying to overcome an eye injury and life after hockey, including his stint with the Florida Panthers organization.

The guys then got into free agency. Teams finally have some money to spend and that could result in some pretty shocking contracts. They talked about what smart teams will do with their money and they also talked about some of the big free agents on the board, like Mitch Marner, who is rumoured to be heading to the Vegas Golden Knights.

Jason also got Chris’ take on this years crop of free agent defensemen. Provorov, Ekblad, and Gavrikov are all coming from very different situations but teams are always hungry for defensemen this time of year. Could one of those three get a bigger contract than we think? Pronger also talked about how going to a different system could expose some flaws in their games.

Tyler then popped in for a new edition of Fill in the Blank where he asked the guys about who could increase their Stanley Cup odds the most in the next week, the New York Islanders big weekend and they shared their favourite under the radar free agent options.

1:00 - Draft weekend recap

13:50 - Chris Pronger on life after hockey

26:10 - Best on Best hockey

22:50 - Mitch Marner’s future

39:55 - Free Agent Defensemen

41:00 - Fill in the Blank

50:00 - Under the radar options

The DFO Rundown
A New CBA Is Coming & The Sabres Send Peterka To Utah

Frank and Jason are back with another offseason edition of The DFO Rundown, and today’s was a busy one. Earlier this morning, Frank broke the story that a new CBA is coming and he outlined all of the changes that are coming with that. The guys dug into all of that and Gregor said what he liked and didn’t like about some of the new elements of the CBA, which will kick in for the 2026-27 season.

Before they talked about that, they did discuss the massive deal that went down on Thursday night as the Buffalo Sabres sent JJ Peterka to the Utah Mammoth in exchange for Josh Doan and Michael Kesselring. The deal seems a bit underwhelming on the surface and the guys talked about that. Frank also shared what some other options may have been for GM Kevyn Adams.

They then really sunk their teeth into the new CBA and new massive changes that are coming, including new term limits, a closing of the LTIR loophole, and an 84-game regular season.

Tyler then popped in for a new edition of Buy or Sell, where he asked the guys about the upcoming free agent class and the chances of a top ten pick getting moved in the 2025 NHL Draft.

In the back half of the show, they did their offseason previews for the eight playoff teams in the Eastern Conference. The Canadiens are apparently itching to make some big moves, but they’re not alone. The Devils and Hurricanes are likely in that boat as well. The Leafs could also be a team that looks very different next season.

The challenge for some of the other competitors like the Panthers, will be trying to dance around some cap challenges.

They wrapped up the show with an announcement about the future of the podcast as Frank officially moves on from Daily Faceoff after this week.

0:45 - Utah lands Peterka

6:00 - What else was on the table for Buffalo?

9:55 - The new CBA

22:54 - Buy or Sell (Top 10 Free Agents, Penguins, Moving a Top 10 Pick)

32:40 - Montreal Canadiens

38:00 - New Jersey Devils

42:10 - Ottawa Senators

46:35 - Tampa Bay Lightning

51:50 - Washington Capitals

53:40 - Carolina Hurricanes

55:25 - Toronto Maple Leafs

The DFO Rundown
Trade Market Check In & The Offseason Ahead for the Western Conference Playoff Teams

It’s the week of the NHL Draft and we are just eight days away from the beginning of free agency. While there wasn’t a lot of news this weekend around the league, there is a lot going on behind the scenes and Frank kicked off today’s edition of The DFO Rundown by giving a quick update on the trade market. Are the Sabres getting closer to moving JJ Peterka? Will the Islanders move Noah Dobson by the draft?

From there, they dug into their offseason previews for the eight teams in the Western Conference that made the playoffs. They started with the St. Louis Blues, who are facing some big questions this summer. The Minnesota Wild are in a position where they can be hyper-aggressive. The Colorado Avalanche are low on funds, but need to make some moves to fix a roster that was bounced in the first round. The Los Angeles Kings are in an interesting spot with a new GM and boatload of cap space.

They kept rolling and hit on the Winnipeg Jets, who are bringing in 3x Stanley Cup Champion Jonathan Toews. What else will Kevin Cheveldayoff do? The guys gave their takes. Vegas never sits still in the offseason and the expectacion is that they will push hard for Mitch Marner. The Dallas Stars already made some spicy decisions after getting bounced by the Oilers in the Western Confernce Final. They still need a coach, but will that be the last big move they make?

They wrapped by talking about the Oilers, the McDavid extension, and what they need to do in order to get back to the Stanley Cup Final.

Tyler joined for Buy or Sell where he asked about Marner’s contract, Jake Allen’s place on the goalie market, and the Rasmus Andersson situation in Calgary.

1:45 - Peterka, Dobson and more

8:20 - St. Louis Blues

15:00 - Minnesota Wild

21:00 - Contract Extensions (Kaprizov and McDavid)

25:45 - Colorado Avalanche

40:20 - Fill in the Blank

52:00 - Winnipeg Jets

1:00:00 - Vegas Golden Knights

1:05:25 - Dallas Stars

The DFO Rundown
The Panthers Repeat As Cup Champs & An Eastern Conference Playoff Preview

And with that, the 2024-25 NHL season has come to a close and for a second straight season, the Florida Panthers are Stanley Cup Champions. Jason and Frank kicked off today’s episode of The DFO Rundown by talking about the Panthers once again winning hockey’s ultimate prize.

For GM Bill Zito, the celebration is short-lived as he now has to focus on trying to keep this group together despite a tight salary cap situation. Frank talked about just how many of the big free agents he thinks the Panthers could hang onto.

They then talked about the Edmonton Oilers, who got to within two games of winning it all. Now, they face a lot of big offseason questions. The first is around Evander Kane and the NHL’s investigation into their use of LTIR. Frank gave some insight into that. They also talked about the Trent Frederic extension.

They then got into their Eastern Conference offseason preview, beginning with the Philadelphia Flyers. The list of needs for GM Danny Briere is long and they have plenty of assets and cap space to use if they want to.

The Boston Bruins are going to be looking to bounce back and add some scoring punch to their roster but they are not the only team in that boat. The Rangers, Red Wings, and Sabres are all looking to take steps forward.

Tyler then popped on for Buy or Sell, where he asked the guys about what playoff team is going to be the busiest this summer and how many players from this last Cup Final could he Hall of Famers one day.

0:15 - Panthers repeat as Cup Champs

4:00 - Evander Kane Investigation

11:30 - Trent Frederic Extension

The DFO Rundown
A Western Conference Offseason Preview

Kick off your week with an all new episode of The DFO Rundown with Jason Gregor and Frank Seravalli as they give you a full offseason preview for each of the eight non-playoff teams in the Western Conference.

They started in the basement with the San Jose Sharks, who have boatloads of cap space. Should GM Mike Grier spend like crazy? Or stay the course? The guys debated that. They then had a similar conversation about the Chicago Blackhawks.

The Nashville Predators were one of the more disappointing teams in the NHL this year and now, they’ll try to get things back on the rails. That could involve trading one of the players they signed last summer. The Seattle Kraken have some contracts that Frank thinks they need to move and probably won’t be buyers.

Speaking of buyers, that’s the expectation in both Anaheim and Utah. Both Frank and Jason agreed that those two teams should be very aggressive this summer.

They then went up to Canada to talk about the Vancouver Canucks, who are trying to turn over a new leaf after a drama filled 2024-25 season and have some clear holes on their roster. The Calgary Flames were one of the more positive surprises in the NHL and instead of heading towards a rebuild, GM Craig Conroy could try to add to this group and try make them a legit playoff team.

Tyler then popped on for a new edition of Fill in the Blank where he asked the guys about Sam Bennett’s Conn Smythe chances and the rumblings about NHL expansion.

They wrapped up the show with some Stanley Cup Final talk as the Panthers have the Oilers on the brink of elimination for a second consecutive season. Can they finish things off on Tuesday? Or will the Oilers drag them back to Alberta?

2:10 - San Jose Sharks

9:10 - Chicago Blackhawks

14:40 - Nashville Predators

21:20 - Seattle Kraken

26:20 - Anaheim Ducks

30:25 - Utah Mammoth

34:20 - Vancouver Canucks

41:10 - Calgary Flames

46:45 - Fill in the Blank

59:50 - Game 6 Preview

The DFO Rundown
Eyeing Up Potential Offer Sheets & New Trade Targets

Frank and Jason are back with a fresh episode of The DFO Rundown. There’s only been one Stanley Cup Final game since the last pod on Monday, so today they focused more on some offseason topics, starting with the first trade of the summer as Chris Kreider is on the verge of being dealt to the Anaheim Ducks.

After breaking down that deal, they got into Frank’s five offer sheet candidates including Maple Leafs forward Matthew Knies. Could a team take a big swing and offer Knies a $10m+ deal? Frank thinks it’s possible but Gregor says any team doing that would be foolish.

From there, they talked about what the Rangers' next move could be and speculated on K’Andre Miller’s future with the team. They also broke down the Isaac Howard situation in Tampa Bay.

Tyler then popped on for a new edition of Buy or Sell where he asked the guys about Mitch Marner’s rights, two of the new big names on Frank’s trade targets board, and he led them into some Stanley Cup Final talk.

They wrapped up the show by talking about some potential adjustments for the Edmonton Oilers as they look to bounce back from getting blown out in Game 3. For the Panthers, they’ll look to take a 3-1 stranglehold and get to within one win of their second straight Stanley Cup.

1:30 - Kreider to the Ducks

7:30 - Offer sheet watch

12:10 - Could Knies make $10m+?

26:30 - Rangers next move

29:15 - Isaac Howard’s future

The DFO Rundown
Buyout candidates, big decisions in Dallas & the Cup Final heads south

Frank and Jason are back with a fresh episode of The DFO Rundown as the Stanley Cup Final has officially become a best-of-five series.

The guys got into the Stanley Cup Final towards the end of the podcast. They started things off by talking about Frank’s buyout candidate list that was released on Friday. Matt Dumba, TJ Brodie and others appear to be players that could have their contracts bought out ahead of free agency this year.

From there, they talked about the Dallas Star’s decision to fire Pete DeBoer and how it’s going to be the first of many big decisions that GM Jim Nill will have to make this summer. They talked about the team’s decision to pass on Seth Jones at the trade deadline, the Jason Robertson trade rumours and the team's pending free agents.

Tyler then jumped in for a new edition of Fill in the Blank where he asked the guys about potential landing spots for Jonathan Toews, the Conn Smythe trophy odds and who could lead the Stanley Cup Final in scoring.

To wrap, the guys got into the Stanley Cup Final where the Florida Panthers got a massive win in Game 2 of the series and now things are all tied up heading down the Sunrise, Florida. They spoke about some key players for the Panthers struggling, the Oilers inability to hold onto home ice advantage, and what they’ll be watching for in Game 3.

12:55 - Stars fire DeBoer

20:00 - Dallas’ big decisions

The DFO Rundown
Oilers Comeback To Win Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final

The Stanley Cup Final is officially underway and both Jason and Frank were in the building last night to take in the action from Edmonton.

They talked about the atmosphere inside Rogers Place and what stood out in Game 1 of the series. It was a tight checking game that was ultimately decided by one goal. Gregor talked about some of the historical feats that occurred last night with the Oilers comeback and Draisaitl’s overtime winner. Frank talked about how if this series is going to be tight, the Oilers depth could be a massive advantage.

One thing the guys both agreed on: this should end up being a pretty long series.

After that, Tyler popped on with a new edition of Buy or Sell where he asked the guys about the last two teams who filled their Head Coaching vacancies, Brock Nelson’s three-year extension in Colorado, and the idea of the players voting on more year end awards, which led to an interesting discussion about the NHL Awards.

From there, the guys went more in depth on the Marco Sturm hiring in Boston and the Penguins deciding on a first time Head Coach themselves in Dan Muse. Frank had thought on what this could mean for the future of the Pittsburgh Penguins.

They also talked about what Gary Bettman had to say at his annual Stanley Cup Final press conference and had a conversation about the LTIR loop hole, state income come and more.

1:10 - Oilers comeback to win Game 1

The DFO Rundown
A Stanley Cup Final Preview: The Panthers & Oilers Get Set for a Rematch

Frank and Jason are back with a fresh episode of The DFO Rundown as they previewed this year’s Stanley Cup Final, which is a rematch of last year’s battle between the Edmonton Oilers and Florida Panthers.

They began by talking about each of these teams paths to the final. The Oilers have been picked against in a lot of their series and yet, have finished off each of the last two rounds in just five games. Does that say more about their competition? Or the level of play they’re at? Gregor says their ability to play near mistake free hockey is the big reason why they’ve been able to roll through the last few rounds.

Frank talked about how the Florida Panthers have some fresh faces in their lineup as well and that we shouldn’t be discounting the defending Stanley Cup Champions. They also had a pretty tough path to get back to this point beating a trio of really good teams.

They also talked about players like Jake Walman and Brad Marchand, whose fingerprints should be all over this series. To wrap, they shared who their x-factors are in this series and gave their picks for both the series and the Conn Smythe Trophy.

Tyler then jumped on for Fill in the Blank where he talked to the guys about the teams that both the Oilers and Panthers have eliminated thus far and how different they could look to start next season. He also got their take on Pete DeBoer’s decision to pull Jake Oettinger and his comments after the game.

To wrap up, Frank gave some insight into the final two coaching vacancies that still exist in both Pittsburgh and Boston. Gregor also talked about some of the coaching news from last week in Seattle and New York.

1:10 - Oilers vs Panthers for The Cup

19:00 - X-Factors for each team

23:50 - Series picks & Conn Smythe picks

29:50 - Fill in the Blank

41:40 - Coaching updates (Isles, Kraken, Bruins & Penguins)

The DFO Rundown
Peterka, Kreider & Rossi Headline This Summer’s Trade Targets List

Frank and Jason kicked off today’s episode of The DFO Rundown by talking about the first Trade Targets list of the summer that dropped earlier this week.

They started at the top of the list with Sabres forward JJ Peterka, who is a pending RFA. How could the Sabres move on from Peterka and improve at the same time? The guys discussed that and a hypothetical deal involving Marco Rossi, who is also in Frank’s top five.

From there, they talked about a few of the defensemen on the list, starting with Rasmus Andersson and his future with the Flames and then they had a big discussion about what the Pittsburgh Penguins could do with Erik Karlsson. If the Penguins were willing to retain a significant portion of his salary, would there be a market for the former 100-point defenseman? Gregor found a spot that he thinks make a lot of sense. They also touched on Jamie Oleksiak of the Seattle Kraken, who is entering the final year of his deal.

Tyler then joined for Buy or Sell where he asked the guys about the Rangers situation with Chris Kreider, the Kraken selling off assets, Demko’s future in Vancouver, and Sam Bennett’s case to be a $10m player.

The guys then turned their attention to the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The Oilers got a big win in Game 4 of the Western Conference Final but it came at a brutal cost as they lost Zach Hyman for the remainder of the postseason. They talked about how the Oilers will adjust their lineup and how much losing Hyman impacts their Stanley Cup chances.

1:20 - JJ Peterka & The Sabres

5:00 - Rossi for Peterka?

11:25 - Rasmus Andersson & The Flames

15:20 - Karlsson’s future in Pittsburgh

28:10 - Buy or Sell (Kreider, the Kraken, & Demko)

38:30 - Oilers lose Hyman

The DFO Rundown
Islanders Choose Darche, the Panthers Dominance & The Oilers Lead the WCF

Frank and Jason are back with a fresh episode of The DFO Rundown to kick off the week.

To begin things today, they talked about the Islanders' decision to go with Mathieu Darche as their next General Manager. He takes over a pretty flawed Isles roster and will certainly have his work cut out for him. The guys talked about what’s on his checklist for this summer and the decision that looms involving current Head Coach Patrick Roy.

After that, they dug into the Conference Finals. We’ve seen three games in both the East and West and one series has been much more interesting than the others.

The Florida Panthers have been absolutely pummeling the Carolina Hurricanes, which has raised some questions about the Canes roster and also Rod Brind’Amour, who is close to losing his 12th straight Conference Finals game.

Out west, the Oilers took a 2-1 series lead over the Stars on Sunday. Stuart Skinner turned in another impressive performance, Evan Bouchard continued to shine and Connor McDavid found the back of the net twice. The guys talked about the series and how the Oilers have this feeling like a lot more than a 2-1 series lead.

Tyler then joined for ‘Fill in the Blank’ where he asked the guys about Mitch Marner’s fit in Carolina, their NHL GM of the Year, and the Stanley Cup odds on Bet365.

To wrap, the guys talked a little bit about USA’s win at the World Hockey Championships.

1:10 - Darche lands on Long Island

11:30 - Panthers jump out to a 3-0 lead

20:25 - Oilers lead Stars 2-1

38:20 - Fill in the Blank

50:00 - USA wins Gold at Worlds

The DFO Rundown
Brendan Shanahan’s future with the Leafs & the Stars Game 1 comeback

Jason and Frank are back with a fresh episode of The DFO Rundown as both conference final series are officially underway and both Game 1’s delivered very interesting results.

Before they dug into those series, though, they talked about the news that the New York Islanders have asked for permission to speak with Toronto Maple Leafs President Brendan Shanahan. Gregor wondered if this doesn’t mean that it’s a foregone conclusion that he is leaving MLSE after more than a decade at the helm but Frank was quick to throw a little bit of cold water on that idea.

They then talked about the Dallas Stars big comeback in Game 1 against the Edmonton Oilers as they scored five goals in the third period to take the opener. Gregor says that Oilers fans shouldn’t be concerned with the result but Frank thinks that anytime a team gives away a game this late in the playoffs, it’s worrisome.

Tyler then popped in for a new edition of Buy or Sell, where he asked the guys about Morgan Rielly’s future in Toronto, the chances of Nikolaj Ehlers signing back in Winnipeg, and which Finnish superstar they would build a team around.

After that, they talked about the Florida Panthers series opening victory in the Eastern Conference Final. Gregor continues to be impressed with the mindset of this Panthers core and talked about how that mentality helped them. The guys also had an argument about a certain stat that pertains to the Hurricanes franchise losing streak in the Conference Finals.

They wrapped up with a quick little conversation about Mitch Marner and the chances he could end up in Carolina this summer and some comparable players to him around the league.

1:20 - Shanahan’s future

11:40 - Stars storm back in Game 1

22:20 - Buy or Sell

27:40 - Canes drop Game 1

44:00 - A Marner conversation

The DFO Rundown
The Conference Finals are set as the Panthers cruise past Leafs in Game 7

We had one Game 7 in the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs and is resulted in another hearbtreaking loss for the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Panthers absolutely dominated the Leafs in each of their final two wins in the series and that’s led to questions about whether or not we will see massive changes in Toronto this summer.

Frank and Jason began the pod by talking about which players should be back next season and what some of the key problems are with this Leafs group. Will next year’s team feature Mitch Marner? What about John Tavares? Could there be an even bigger trade coming?

From there, they previewed the Hurricanes and Panthers matchup. These two teams met two years ago in the ECF and it resulted in a Panthers sweep. Will the Canes push them any harder this year?

Tyler then joined for a new edition of Fill in the Blank, where he asked the guys some questions about the final four teams in the Stanley Cup Playoffs and the offseason ahead for the bottom five teams from this past season.

To wrap up, the guys put a bow on the Stars vs Jets series, talked about Hellebuyck’s performances on the road, and what the Jets could do this summer. They then previewed the Oilers and Stars series, which is a rematch of last years Western Conference Final.

23:55 - Canes & Cats move on

26:10 - Fill in the Blank

The DFO Rundown
The Leafs are gonna Leaf & the Oilers are gonna Oil

We had our first team advance to the Conference Final as the Edmonton Oilers eliminated the Vegas Golden Knights in five games. That’s where Jason and Frank started today on a new episode of The DFO Rundown.

It’s the third Western Conference Final in four years for Connor McDavid and company, and this one seems like the most unexpected of the bunch. The guys broke down the decisive series win and the Oilers' chances going forward before getting to the other series.

Out East, the Maple Leafs got steamrolled by the Florida Panthers in Game 5 of their series. It was another pivotal moment in the history of this Leafs core and Frank explained why this loss tells us a lot about Toronto’s stars.

They then pivoted and talked about the two new coaching hires in the NHL as the Philadelphia Flyers landed their guy in Rick Tocchet and the Vancouver Canucks filled their vacancy and elevated Adam Foote to the Head Coaching position. Gregor asked the question of which new coach is in a better position going forward.

Frank also gave an update on some other coaching vacancies and the candidates to fill them.

Tyler then popped in with a new edition of Fill in the Blank, where he asked the guys about Frank’s Top 50 free agent list, Ken Holland’s shopping list in Los Angeles and the other two series going on in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

To wrap, they talked a little bit more about Frank’s list and gave their takes on the two elimination games that are going on tonight with the Canes having the Caps on the ropes and the Jets fighting for their lives against the Stars.

1:40 - Oilers eliminate the Golden Knights

12:10 - Panthers push Leafs to the brink

26:25 - Foote takes over in Vancouver & Flyers land Tocchet

34:00 - Other coaching vacancies

35:40 - Buy or Sell

45:40 - Top 50 Free Agents

The DFO Rundown
The Florida Panthers Even Things Up, The NHL’s Coaching Market & an Early Look at the Free Agent Class

Jason and Frank are back with a fresh episode of The DFO Rundown as the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs continues to roll on. At first, it felt like we might get a few pretty quick series, but the results from this weekend have drastically changed things.

To start things off, they looked into the Toronto and Florida series, where the home teams have been absolutely dominant. The Maple Leafs were a bounce away from taking a 3-0 series lead but now, things are all tied up at two as they head back to Toronto for Game 5.

They also talked about the Dallas Stars taking a 2-1 series lead on the Winnipeg Jets and some of the headlines that have come from that series like the seven-minute video review, Hellebuyck's play and Mason Marchment hitting a referee with his stick.

They also quickly touched on some of the coaching situations around the league, including Joel Quenneville being officially hired by the Anaheim Ducks, before getting to Tyler Yaremchuk and a new edition of Fill in the Blank, where he asked the guys about Frank’s latest Top 50 Free Agents ranking.

After that, they talked about the other two series from Round 2 as the Golden Knights got a massive last second victory over the Edmonton Oilers to get themselves right back in their series and the Carolina Hurricanes delivered another dominant victory over the Washington Capitals and now have a 2-1 series lead.

0:55 - Panthers even up series with Maple Leafs

8:40 - Hellebuyck & the Jets

14:50 - Marchment’s frustration

20:40 - Coaching updates

27:40 - Fill in the Blank

The DFO Rundown
Rantanen Powers Stars in Game 1 & The Leafs Stun The Panthers Early

Frank and Jason are back with a fresh edition of The DFO Rundown as the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs is officially underway. They kicked things off by talking about Mikko Rantanen’s dominance in Game 1 of the Dallas Stars series against the Winnipeg Jets.

It’s his second straight hat-trick and third straight game with three or more points and it’s the number one reason why the Stars are even in round two, nevermind leading the series. On the other hand, his performance is also causing more and more people to raise an eyebrow at the Colorado Avalanche front-office. The guys gave their take on Game 1 and the Avs press conference from earlier this week.

From there, they talked about the Maple Leafs jumping out to a 2-0 series lead against the Florida Panthers. William Nylander has been incredible and the Leafs got a good performance from Jospeh Woll as well. Are the Panthers in trouble? Or can they grab back momentum as the series shifts back to Florida?

They quickly hit on the Canes grabbing Game 1 over the Capitals and the Oilers dominant win over the Golden Knights as they wrestled home ice advantage away from Vegas.

Tyler then popped in for Buy or Sell where he asked the guys if any of these second round series will be short, the GM searches in Los Angeles and Long Island, and the Utah Mammoth officially announcing their name and logo.

They wrapped up by talking more about the GM searches around the league and Rick Tocchet’s job hunt.

0:55 - Rantanen nets another hat-trick

16:30 - Leafs stun Panthers

18:40 - Canes take Game 1

20:25 - Golden Knights drop Game 1

29:40 - Buy or Sell

40:15 - Kings & Isles GM search

43:50 - Tocchet’s future

48:00 - Sabres front-office

52:30 - Canucks Head Coach search

Rantanen steals series & the miracle in Winnipeg

The first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs has come to a close and the drama at the kind of stuff that will have us remembering these playoffs for a really long time. Jason and Frank kicked off today’s episode of The DFO Rundown by breaking down the Winnipeg Jets miraculous comeback in Game 7 against the St. Louis Blues and Mikko Rantanen saving the season for Dallas Stars with his heroics.

From there, they talked about the teams that were bounced over the last few days. The St. Louis Blues took a step this season, can they find a way to become an elite team in the Western Conference? What will the Wild do this summer? Will the Kings run it back with both Rob Blake and Jim Hiller in charge? Can the Lightning keep their window open for another run? The guys went through all of those questions.

Tyler then popped in for Fill in the Blank where he asked the guys about their first round MVP, which second round series is the biggest lock to go seven games, and what draft lottery outcome would be the most chaotic?

To wrap up the pod, they talked about the Rangers officially hiring Mike Sullivan as their next Head Coach and then they went through every second round series and gave their predictions.

The DFO Rundown
The Defending Champs Move On & It’s Game 6 Galore on Thursday Night

Jason and Frank are back with another playoff edition of The DFO Rundown as we saw a handful of series come to a close over the last few days.

To kick things off today, they dug into the Battle of Florida, which was dominated by the Panthers. Frank wondered why so many people didn’t want to believe in the defending Stanley Cup Champions and also talked a little bit about Jon Cooper’s future in Tampa Bay. Could he potentially walk away and look to become a General Manager somewhere else?

From there, they went to the Capitals vs Canadiens series, which also ended in five games. The Habs put up a good fight but it just wasn’t enough as the Caps put them away. Does Washington have the horses to turn this series win into a deep playoff run?

The Carolina Hurricanes also punched their ticket to the next round, which put Head Coach Rod Brind’Amour into a pretty exclusive class with his seventh straight first-round win. Can the Canes finally find success later in the playoffs?

They also hit on what the Devils need to do this summer to take the next step before Tyler Yaremchuk popped on for a new edition of Buy or Sell. He asked the boys about the chances of a big trade in Montreal, the best landing spots for Rick Tocchet, and which teams have the best and worst chances of coming back from their 3-2 series deficits.

To wrap up, they dug into the Leafs' continued struggles in close-out games and the rest of the series that could come to a close tonight.

1:00 - Bolts get bounced

11:30 - Caps advance

14:45 - Devils' next steps

19:50 - Canes' chances of going deep

31:00 - Buy or Sell

43:15 - Game 6 scenarios

The DFO Rundown
Penguins & Mike Sullivan Part Ways. PLUS: A Complete Stanley Cup Playoff Weekend Breakdown

Frank and Jason are back with a fresh episode of The DFO Rundown and they started today’s show with some breaking news: the Pittsburgh Penguins Head Coach Mike Sullivan have parted ways.

Where could Sullivan land? Who could the Penguins target as their next Head Coach? The guys answered all of that and more, including some talk about the possibility of University of Denver Head Coach David Carle making the jump to the NHL.

They then went through all the other pieces of the league’s coaching carousel as there are more than a handful of openings and there could be even more coming. Rick Tocchet’s future in Vancouver is still up in the air, as is Patrick Roy’s on Long Island. There are plenty of teams looking for a new bench boss and that led the guys to rank the openings from around the league.

Tyler then popped in for a new edition of Fill in the Blank where he got the guys talking about the wild weekend of Stanley Cup Playoff action. He asked about which teams should be feeling uneasy when it comes to their goaltending, the chances of some 3-1 comebacks & how the Oilers forced their way back into their series with the Kings.
