Welcome to Calling the Quarters! and this is Season 3, Episode 8.
Today, we're diving into the fascinating world of myth and folklore as our host, Dean Jones, sits down with Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon from the Three Ravens Podcast!
Launched in 2023, the Three Ravens Podcast has carved out a niche for itself by exploring the history, folklore, and traditions of a different historic county each week. We’re talking about everything from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters and half-forgotten, bloody legends.
But the best part? Martin and Eleanor take turns to tell a brand-new version of an ancient story from that county, then break down what the tale means and the hidden truths it reveals about our past.
And speaking of tales, their new book, Three Ravens: Tales, has just been released by The History Press! It collects 39 original tellings—one for each of England's historic counties—making it perfect for bedtimes, cozy reading, or even telling to the fairies at the bottom of your garden!
It's going to be a captivating conversation. Let's not waste another minute. I take you now to the interview.

Author Bio:
I'm Diana Helmuth (pronounced "hell - myth")
I am a nonfiction author, freelance writer, Silicon Valley startup veteran, hiker, producer and cupcake baker. I'm a pretty bad gardener, but I try to do that, too.
My writing usually (but not always) centers on travel, nature, and millennial philosophical trends. I try to keep things funny. I also cry a lot.
My first book How to Suffer Outside: A Beginner's Guide to Hiking and Backpacking (Mountaineers Press) won the National Outdoor Book Award for Best Instructional. My second book, The Witching Year: A Memoir of Earnest Fumbling Through Modern Witchcraft (Simon Element), was featured on All Things Considered , reviewed in The New York Times, and nominated for the 2023 Goodreads Choice Award for Best Memoir & Autobiography. I was NPR's "Main Character of the Day" on November 1, 2023.
In addition to my nonfiction, I have interviewed 150+ subject matter experts for Abrams' Books famous Fifty Places travel series, and regularly contribute to the pop culture blog Pajiba. I occasionally write and test backpacking gear for Outdoor Life magazine.
Like most writers, writing is not all I do. In the San Francisco Bay Area, I have helped numerous startups with operational growth and thoughtful creation of first products. My business experience is here.
I am a producer on Da7e and Neil's Pop Culture Adventure (where we're currently re-watching Twin Peaks). Before that, I produced The Storm: A Lost Rewatch Podcast headed by Joanna Robinson (The Ringer), Neil Miller (One Perfect Shot) and Dave Gonzales (Thrillist), and saw it exceed 4 million downloads.
I studied Cultural Anthropology at UC Berkeley and the American University in Cairo under multiple scholarships.
I have an obsession with empathy. You may have seen me dance.
I am on LinkedIn, Twitter, and Instagram, but we're having more fun on TikTok.

Bio: Jennifer Ball
"Based on the Wirral, England (UK), Jennifer is currently completing the final year of her PhD at Bangor University, Wales (UK), researching into the LGBTQ+ community within Paganism. More specifically, she is looking into the affects of heteronormative and cisnormative themes that can be prevalent across many different Pagan denominations. A research project that has also featured within the Wild Hunt community notes.
Jennifer began her studies on Paganism after writing her undergraduate dissertation on the changes of witch iconography in recent histories. As this discussion bled into the reclamation of the term “witch” within the Wiccan, Witchcraft and Goddess communities, this ignited a passion within her to continue to research Paganism both academically and personally.
She later completed a Research Masters (MRes) that she broke down into three interesting topics. These discussions were entitled: “Commodified Witchcraft: The influence of the 1990s “media witch craze” on Wicca as a religion today.”, “The revival of nature-based religions: An investigation into the ancient roots of contemporary Druidry.”, and ““Paganism is fast-developing as the new religion of the twenty-first century”: An investigation into the rapid growth of Paganism in contemporary western society.”
She has spoken publicly on these various topics, most notably for the Museum of Witchcraft and Magic (Boscastle, England, UK) at their equinox colloquium in 2019, and most recently in Universität Luzerne Switzerland at their Structuring Diversity, Structuring Religion conference in 2023."

Hailing from San Francisco in 1970, my life has been a journey up and down the West Coast, from the Alaskan expanse to the vibrant Bay Area. My heritage is a blend of Scottish and Irish roots.
Currently, I'm immersed in the world of academia, pursuing a Master's in Marriage and Family Therapy with the ultimate goal of joining the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists (AASECT). My passion lies in helping others navigate the complexities of human connection.
On a personal note, I'm incredibly proud of my amazing child, who's currently thriving in junior college. When I'm not engaged in studies or cheering on my child, I enjoy collecting vintage cookbooks, intriguing ironwork, and unique bones.
