The Methylation Cycle Explained: Key Insights for Parents of Autistic and ADHD Children
In this episode of the Brain Development Podcast, Lara explores the intricate subject of methylation and its vital role in supporting the health and development of neurodiverse children, including those with autism, ADHD, and OCD. She is joined by Vicky from The Happy Healthy Unicorn, who breaks down methylation using the analogy of interconnected cogs, highlighting its role in activating neurotransmitters and hormones. Vicky explains that many autistic children are under-methylated, which can significantly impact their brain function and behaviour. She warns of the potential risks associated with high-dose folate supplementation without understanding a child’s unique biochemical needs. Drawing from her training with the Walsh Institute, she shares practical strategies to support methylation through gut health, digestion, and proper nutrient absorption. This conversation aims to equip parents with both knowledge and hope, demonstrating that with targeted interventions, meaningful improvements in a child’s wellbeing and behaviour are achievable. Key Takeaways: Methylation Basics: Methylation is a critical biological process involving methyl groups that are essential for the functioning of neurotransmitters, hormones, and other systems. Under-methylation is common in neurodiverse children, especially those with autism. Gut Health Matters: A healthy gut is crucial for producing B vitamins needed for methylation. Issues like poor digestion, low zinc, or imbalanced gut flora can disrupt this process, so gut health must be prioritised. Nutrition is Key: Diets rich in protein, vegetables, and essential nutrients support effective methylation. Children who are under-methylated often struggle with carbohydrate-heavy or low-protein diets, impacting nutrient absorption. Personalised Approaches: Each child is unique. Tailored, gradual dietary and lifestyle changes are more effective than drastic overhauls, reducing stress and increasing long-term success. Best Moments: "Methylation is like a load of cogs... turning together to achieve a specific outcome." – Vicky "In someone with an autism diagnosis, typically they are under-methylated, which means that they don't create enough of the methyl groups." – Vicky "If you think about the methyl group... when he puts his cape on, his uniform, that he would have methyl and then he'd have this superpower." – Vicky "If you can't digest protein, you're not gonna access methionine, which is an essential part of your methylation cycle." – Vicky Host Bio: Lara Barnes, a successful woman in tech, found herself navigating her son’s behavioural, learning, and speech challenges. This journey led her to study functional neurology and brain development, ultimately transforming her son's life. Together, they explore the intricate relationship between brain health, gut function, and environmental influences that affect neurodiverse children, including those with autism, ADHD, and dyslexia. Drawing from years of clinical experience, Dr. Daigle shares valuable insights on addressing root causes such as inflammation, chronic infections, and the neurological impact of modern living. He also introduces innovative, non-invasive treatments like cranial nerve stimulation and intranasal probiotics, underscoring the critical role sinus health plays in supporting cognitive development. This episode is a must-listen for parents and caregivers seeking a deeper understanding of neurological health and actionable steps to support their child’s development. Dr. Daigle offers a message of hope and practical tools to help children reach their full potential. KEY TAKEAWAYS Brain-Gut Connection: The brain’s health is tightly linked to the gut and sinus systems. Inflammation, infections, and poor gut function can significantly affect neurological development and behaviour. Critical Early Years: The first two years of life are foundational for brain development. Maternal health, toxins, nutrition, and early stimulation all influence long-term neurological outcomes. Role of Cranial Nerves: Cranial nerves regulate essential sensory and motor functions. When these nerves are disrupted, it can lead to imbalances in brain activity that impact learning, focus, and behaviour. Environmental Toxins Matter: Exposure to microplastics, mould, preservatives, and other toxins is increasingly linked to neurodevelopmental delays. Creating cleaner environments can greatly reduce risks for children. BEST MOMENTS Dr. Daigle:“The brain controls the immune system. Today’s society is highly toxic—developmental delays often begin at conception.” Dr. Daigle:“If the brain can’t regulate facial tone, sinus infections can migrate into the brain and gut, impacting overall neurological health.” Lara:“Many primitive reflexes are tied to facial structure. Reducing fungal or bacterial infections in the nose directly supports brain development.” Dr. Daigle:“Vaginal delivery seeds a baby’s immune system via secretions. C-section babies miss this crucial step, affecting early development.” HOST BIO Lara Barnes, a successful tech entrepreneur, began her journey into functional neurology while helping her son overcome speech, learning, and behavioural challenges. Healing the Gut: Strategies to Combat Yeast Overgrowth in Autistic and ADHD Children
In this episode of the Brain Development Podcast, Lara delves into the impact of yeast on gut health, particularly in children with autism, ADHD, and other learning differences. She welcomes Vicky Finlayson from Healthy Happy Unicorn, who shares her expertise on how yeast overgrowth can lead to inflammation and various behavioural symptoms. Vicky explains the mechanisms behind yeast's opportunistic nature, its effects on the immune system, and how it can disrupt gut health, leading to issues like leaky gut and food sensitivities. The discussion also covers practical strategies for parents to manage yeast overgrowth through dietary changes, stress reduction, and specific supplements KEY TAKEAWAYS Understanding Yeast Overgrowth: Yeast, particularly Candida, is a commensal organism in the gut that can become harmful when it overgrows, often due to a suppressed immune system, antibiotic use, or an imbalance in gut bacteria. Impact on Behaviour and Health: Yeast overgrowth can lead to various behavioural and health issues in children, including intense cravings for sugar and carbs, emotional instability, and symptoms resembling intoxication due to the production of alcohol-like byproducts. Dietary Influence: A diet high in refined carbohydrates and sugars can exacerbate yeast overgrowth. Strategies for Management: Effective strategies to manage yeast overgrowth include increasing vegetable intake, avoiding refined sugars, ensuring proper hydration, and using specific supplements like apple pectin and prebiotics to support gut health. BEST MOMENTS "Yeast overgrowth is like when fungus sort of takes over... when the immune system is possibly not firing on all cylinders." - Vicky Finlayson "When antibiotics happen, yeasts can change into a different form called hypha... they penetrate the gut lining." - Vicky Finlayson "If your child is in this heightened state all the time and their blood sugar's being pushed up constantly, then of course that's going to cause this issue." - Vicky Finlayson "Antibiotics will kill off all of the beneficial bacteria... the only thing that's left is the fungus." - Lara HOST BIO Lara Barnes a successful woman in tech found herself managing behavioural, learning and speech difficulties with her son, she learn functional neurology and how to change the brain to correct his symptoms and build his left brain. Transforming Lives: Dr. Josh Madsen's Bottom-Up Approach to Neurodevelopmental Challenges
Lara engages in a transformative conversation with Dr. Josh Madsen, a neurodevelopmental chiropractor who is changing how we approach learning and behavioural challenges in children with autism, ADHD, dyslexia, and more. Dr. Madsen stresses a bottom-up approach to brain development, targeting foundational neurological gaps rather than just managing symptoms. He explores the critical role of energy production, mitochondrial function, and environmental influences on neurological health. The episode underscores the power of early intervention, the integration of primitive reflexes, and the importance of a healthy lifestyle for both parents and children. Listeners will gain actionable insights and strategies to support their child’s development by addressing root causes, not just surface behaviours. KEY TAKEAWAYS Bottom-Up Brain Development Dr. Madsen explains that real progress occurs when we address early brain development by improving energy production, reducing inflammation, and integrating primitive reflexes, key to supporting neurological function in children. Early Intervention is Essential Developmental delays often begin in the first year of life. Addressing these early, particularly motor skill delays and reflex issues, can dramatically change long-term cognitive and behavioural outcomes. Parental Health & Environment Children’s neurological development is shaped by their environment and parental health before conception. Nutritional quality, toxin exposure, and emotional wellbeing all impact how the brain develops. Nutrition and Lifestyle Whole foods, minimal processing, and limiting artificial additives are essential. When parents model healthy behaviours, children are far more likely to adopt them. BEST MOMENTS Dr. Josh Madsen: “When those mechanisms are disrupted, the body can't produce enough energy for the neurological system to develop properly.” Dr. Josh Madsen: “If you want to create attention issues in a child, it’s not difficult—damage their gut, feed them poorly, and expose them to constant electronics.” Dr. Josh Madsen: “Early support can save countless hours of future rehabilitation, speech therapy, or physiotherapy. The earlier we intervene, the better.” Lara: “‘Wait and see’ is one of the most dangerous things a doctor can say. Wait and see for what?” HOST BIO Lara Barnes is a successful woman in tech who turned to functional neurology to help her son with behavioural, learning, and speech difficulties.
