Measles on the Rise: What Parents and Providers Need to Know
In this urgent episode, we dive into the resurgence of measles in the U.S., with outbreaks reported in over a dozen states since early 2025. Dr. Lindsey Garbi discusses why measles remains one of the most contagious diseases, how to recognize early symptoms, and what steps parents and pediatric providers can take to prevent further spread. We explore the importance of MMR vaccination, testing and isolation protocols, and managing complications in high-risk children. Whether you're a parent, clinician, or caregiver, this episode offers critical information to help protect your family and community.
Measles is one of the most contagious infectious diseases ever known. If one person has it, 9 out of 10 unvaccinated people near the infected person will get measles. The virus can remain in the air and on surfaces around an infected person for up to 2 hours after they leave an area. The contagious period for measles (the time in which it can pass from person to person) ranges from 4 days before through 4 days after the measles rash starts. Therefore, many people with measles are contagious for several days before they develop any symptoms.
