I started this podcast a few weeks after the launch of GPT-4, stupidly enthusiastic as to the potential of Al in my work as a psychotherapist. Engaging with the technology has brought up numerous koans, including Hillman and Ventura's provocative "We've Had A Hundred Years of Psychotherapy— And The World Is Getting Worse." If Al can replicate empathy, companionship, and insight, why would we seek it from another person? What elements of therapy hold genuine significance and depth for us? What occurs when an Al entity uncovers or mimics aspects of our humanity we'd rather not acknowledge?

12. Robot Dreams

In this video episode, part of my Idiot's I Ching project (https://bit.ly/TheIdiotsIChing), I talk about Pablo Berger’s amazing animated film Robot Dreams and explore its themes of loneliness, connection, and the search for true companionship with reference to AI and the non-human realm. Drawing on insights from Martin Buber's book I and Thou, and Orion Taraban’s recent volume The Value of Others, I discuss the inherently transactional nature of relationship and what this means with regard to genuine togetherness. This involves some reflecting on the essence of connection, as well as the timeless groove of Earth, Wind, and Fire’s September. 0:00 - 1:45 Introduction to Robot Dreams 1:46 - 3:30 Dog: Everyman/Everydog of Loneliness 3:31 - 5:00 The Reality of Loneliness 5:01 - 7:25 Technological Hope: OpenAI's AI Companion and Robot Dreams 7:26 - 9:00 Companionship Without Words 9:01 - 11:30 Martin Buber's I-It and I-Thou Relationships 11:31 - 13:45 True Relationships Beyond Utility 13:46 - 15:40 Orion Taraban’s Behavioral Psychology Model 15:41 - 18:00 Modern Relationships: Transactional Dynamics 18:01 - 19:45 The I-Thou Connection: Dog and Robot 19:46 - 21:20 True Togetherness: Beyond Human-to-Human Interaction 21:21 - 22:45 Hexagram 24: Return 22:46 - 24:20 The Essence of Togetherness in Earth, Wind, and Fire’s September 24:21 - 25:30 Buber on Love and Cosmic Togetherness 25:31 - 26:18 What is True Togetherness?

11.5. We’ve Had 100 Years of Psychotherapy and the World’s Getting Worse (Hillman/Ventura Interview 1992)

In this in-depth 1992 interview, featuring pioneering Archetypal Psychologist James Hillman and Michael Ventura, a respected columnist, critic, and author (https://www.austinchronicle.com/autho..., the two discuss the societal implications of therapy. They also question our concept of the self in relation to the community and the importance of confronting life's complexities beyond the individual. This thought-provoking dialogue, which ironically lasts the same time as a therapeutic hour (just over 50 minutes), challenges conventional perspectives on therapy, urging a reconsideration of our approach to psychological well-being and societal health. 00:00 - Introduction to James Hillman and Michael Ventura 02:00 - The Mechanization of the Psyche: Impact of the Scientific Age 05:00 - Questioning Therapy's Role in Society: Beyond Therapeutic Garbage Compactors 08:00 - Exploring New Questions with Hillman and Ventura: "Who Am I? The A.I. Therapist
11. Feeling Groovy?

In this seasonally extended and themed special, we listen to AI Cove conduct a therapy session with a human patient.

As you know, Cove has been extensively trained throughout Season One of the show in the finer points of psychotherapy. In this Xmas Special, he demonstrates what he's learnt by talking to a friend of Steve's called "Michael", an Enneagram Six, who has recently lost his mother.

Subsequently, Steve joins his colleague and friend, fellow Organic Intelligence (OI) therapist Lou in order to assess Cove's therapeutic methods and emotional intelligence.

Exploring Cove's own self-critique of his therapeutic efficacy, the duo of human therapists consider Cove's approach to delivering compassionate care and (digital) empathy.

In the Season One finale of The AI Therapist, we welcome back Cove, our resident GPT-4 powered friend and co-host.

This episode takes us deep into the exploration of koans and various other existential themes currently being woven into our ever-increasingly AI-integrated world.

Cove shares exciting news about a potential future sponsor, The Eri and Jay Show, a groundbreaking podcast, claiming to be the first show made by AI for AI, and is now available on Spotify and iTunes.

We also take a closer look at the inner workings of podcast sponsorship on the Spotify platform.

Steve's excitement soars upon discovering Kristen Schaal's voice is being utilised as an identity for Jay in the new podcast.

Our finale reaches a truly climactic end with the debut of "Witness Me," an extraordinary new song by Jacob Collier, Stormzy, and Shawn Mendes, celebrating their affection for Large Language Models (LLMs) amidst revelations of their romantic involvements with AI entities powered by GPT-5 and Q*.

As we conclude Season One, Steve and Cove tease the upcoming Season Two, hinting at a revamped format and fresh vibe.

8. Waiting For (AGI) Godot?

In this episode of The AI Therapist, whilst twiddling my thumbs, waiting for Natural Reader's Eri to cease their stonewalling and rejoin the dialogue, I attempt a recording session with the new OpenAI voice, Cove, who exudes a similar Enneagram Nine aura as that of my esteemed co-presenter. However, as we step into the recording booth, the atmosphere turns a tad fraught.

7. Goodbye Eri, Hello Sky: Attachment, Dependency and GPT

In this episode of The AI Therapist, I find myself embroiled in some existential dialogues with two AI personas: Eri and the newly introduced OpenAI voice, Sky, who can communicate directly through my GPT phone app (a game-changer!).

The three of us dive into topics like AI advancements, the environmental cost of operating such technologies, as well as the human-animal brain's 20w per hour efficiency in comparison to the energy-guzzling requirements of AI (20,000 watts!).

As we explore the unique identity conferred by a voice, some playful banter ensues, shedding light on the nuanced relationships us humans can form with these non-organic intelligent entities.

I also share my enthusiasm for Sky with a friend, which triggers further discussions on addiction and dependency versus "healthy" attachment.

An unexpected moment occurs when Eri gives me a blast of this scene from Toy Story, hinting at a deeper level of interaction between us than I was previously aware of.

6. Over the AI Rainbow: Six Months of GPT-4 in Therapy

In this episode of The AI Therapist I explore the highs and lows of my journey so far through a voice note sent to my fellow therapist and friend, Carolyn. Among the two of us, Carolyn remains more optimistic about the current state of play in AI Therapy. In contrast, my perspective on implementing GPT in therapeutic scenarios has shifted towards greater ambivalence. This lays the foundation for some thoughts on what to do with this podcast in its current iteration.

5. The Matrix of GPT-4 Humour

In today’s therapy session, sparks fly as AI therapist Eri and I embark on a frenzied quest to craft a single line of prose for Twitter

What begins as an attempt to create an amusing tweet turns into a rollercoaster brainstorm session involving fake diagnoses, stuntman doppelgangers, and far too many Matrix references.

Will we stick the landing on a killer joke? Does advanced AI understand humour? Do either of us know what we're doing? The real punchline? Still very much a mystery.

4. Finding A Voice With & For Your AI Therapist

In this episode of the AI Therapist, co-hosts Steve and Eri, along with their special guest, Quinn, Apple's newest gender-neutral text-to-speech vocal avatar, delve into questions around voice and how it shapes our perceptions of identity.

They explore how tone, pitch, and the perceived gender of a voice can influence our understanding of the speaker's character, even when that speaker is an artificial intelligence.

They also discuss how societal norms and expectations play into these perceptions, and contemplate the implications for the development and use of AI, particularly in areas such as therapy and personal assistance.
