That Sounds Funny

251 episodes

People often ask us about being blind, and how we do the things we do. Our anchor segment features a facet of the adaptive skills we learned from the Blindness Rehab Center (BRC). We discuss various specialized products that blind people use as a prosthetic, as well as simple ways to adapt to the world around us and in the home.

Along the way we have some fun telling funny life stories, share unusual news items, top 10 lists, and even letters from listeners. Leave us ratings, reviews, blah blah blah. But feel free to tell us your funny life story, ask a question, or suggest a topic you want to hear about.

Our goal is to keep the conversation family-friendly, fun, and humorous. Language may drift to the childish, but kept as clean as possible. Some topics may not be geared to children, so parental guidance is preferred.

Quick recap
The podcast hosts began by sharing personal updates and anecdotes about family events and experiences, including discussions about sports games and church activities. The group then shared various news stories and humorous tales, covering topics like unusual animal incidents, restaurant rankings, and historical time capsule discoveries. The conversation ended with vocabulary discussions, technology updates about iPhone features, email stories, and a session of sharing jokes among the hosts.
Summary
The podcast hosts discussed recent updates, including Terry’s new heart monitor and Jill’s experiences attending grandchildren’s soccer games. They shared humorous anecdotes about homecoming dances and the challenges of attending outdoor sports events in hot weather. The conversation touched on the rules surrounding high school dances and the differences in experiences between watching younger and older grandchildren’s games.
Terry discussed a church fish fry event where Terry and Keith shared their experiences with different types of fish, including buffalo and tilapia. Keith then shared details about a recent episode of The Beverly Hillbillies he watched, describing a scene where Granny’s magic potions temporarily transformed people’s speech and mannerisms.
News of the Week
The group shared several news stories and anecdotes. Terry told a story about a blind pigeon named Kevin in Texas who was found sleeping in a customer’s truck and was later reunited with his owner with help from the police. Jill shared a story about a slug in Germany that was caught crawling across doorbell buttons, causing multiple homes to ring at 2 AM. Keith shared news about a Maplewood, Missouri restaurant called Robins that was named one of the top 5 restaurants in the country, offering a four-course meal for $75.
Terry told a story about a pet toucan named Chester who fell into a toilet while his owner was cleaning, requiring the fire department to rescue him using Froot Loops. Jill shared a story about a police K-9 named Gator who found a bear instead of a suspect during a search in Volusia County. Keith concluded by sharing a story about an illegal immigrant moose named Emil who had traveled from Poland through the Czech Republic to Austria, causing train line closures when it reached railroad tracks near Vienna.
Terry shared a story about a time capsule found at Smithtown West High School that was supposed to be opened in 2017 but had been lost in storage since 1992. The capsule contained various school items including photos, calendars, banners, and a VHS tape from the 1970s and 1990s.
Jill’s Weird Words
The group then discussed several unusual words, including “snollygoster” (meaning a shrewd politician), “dorodango” (referring to a Japanese art form using earth and water), and “hypnagogic” (describing the state just before falling asleep).
The conversation was casual and included personal anecdotes and humor throughout the discussion.
Terry’s Top 10 List
Terry then shared a humorous top 10 list titled “10 Funny Reasons Why You Should Not Get Married,” highlighting benefits like unlimited bed space, fridge freedom, and no in-laws.
Anchor Topic
Keith turns the topic over to Terry who discussed recent iPhone updates, including iOS 18.7 and iOS 26, noting that many new features are visually oriented but don’t significantly impact Voiceover users. Terry shared his experience with the updates and mentioned a new call screening feature in the phone app.
Email and Final Thoughts
Keith shared two email stories during the meeting. The first story was about a shoeshine man who posed as a millionaire named John Smith Jr to impress a CEO, eventually revealing his true identity and the origin of his wealth.
