This Independence Day marks 60 years of freedom, and I’m taking you back to where the chains began.
Sixty Years of Independence is a three-part series tracing the shadows before, during, and after Maldives fell into British hands under the protectorate agreement.
In this episode, I present my research on Boduhulhuge Haadhisa — the fire that swallowed Malé whole, leaving behind not just ashes, but an opening for empire.
Maldivian history has primarily been preserved through oral traditions, with limited written documentation available. As a result, some details presented in this episode may not be entirely precise.
However, I have made every effort to compile and synthesize the information from the sources I was able to access.
