Faced with the daunting task of handling a teen drug abuse problem in her family, Marsha Van Weinberg felt overwhelmed
and helpless. After trying to manage the situation on her own, she eventually reached a breaking point when both her sons experienced an overdose and suicide attempt within four days of each other. This prompted Marsha to realize that her current approach was not working and she sought out potential solutions to help her family cope with this difficult situation.
In this episode, the speaker talks about their experience of advocating for their children in a difficult situation involving
substance abuse. They discuss how they hit a "rock bottom moment" and had to switch their mindset and allow legal
ramifications to be part of the process. This resulted in them creating simple and clear life rules that they were willing to
stick to, even when their children tried to resist or break them. The speaker emphasizes the importance of accountability in order for behavior change, as well as taking care of oneself and making oneself a priority. This text is about a family's experience with a loved one struggling with addiction and how they had to learn to grieve the life they thought they were going to have and create clear boundaries in order to stay consistent. They found ways to still love them for who they were, but not try to fix them as it was their job to decide when it was time for change. It took three or four years of staying consistent with this message before any real progress could be seen, and then when the kids hit 18 things changed even more.
This is the story of a parent who wishes they had been more proactive in advocating for their children when they were
younger, but still managed to support them in creating positive change in their lives. Through open communication and
respect, the parent was able to build a relationship with their now grown children and help them make decisions that moved them away from negative situations and towards a better future. The parent also shares the steps needed to create this kind of change with others, while respecting that it is not their story to tell. In this text, a parent speaks of the experience of rebuilding trust with their child after years of drug abuse. They emphasize that trust is something that needs to be earned through action rather than words, and that it may take time and effort to rebuild. They also advise parents to stay consistent in their approach, trusting their gut and understanding that their job is ultimately to give the child's future self a chance.
Marsha is the 6-time Bestselling Author of “When She Stopped Asking Why”. She shares her lessons as a parent who dealt with teen substance abuse that tore her family unit apart.
