Bridging Two Worlds: How Jason Brings Civilian Tech Expertise into the Army Reserves
As Reservists Day approaches, TechVets sat down with Jason, a seasoned service manager in the civil nuclear sector and an Army reservist with 13 Signal Regiment. His story is a compelling example of how tech professionals can bring critical skills into the Armed Forces—while also growing as individuals and leaders. Jason’s route into the reserves began in 2014, driven by a desire to do more with his career than his then-role in IT service management. He initially joined the RAF Reserves but found it didn’t offer the hands-on, high-impact tech engagement he sought. That changed when he discovered SGIS—a specialist consultancy unit within the Royal Signals. From RAF to Cybersecurity: How Alex Daly Found a New Mission with Cisco
Transitioning from the military to civilian life can feel like navigating uncharted territory. For Alex Daly, a Customer Delivery Security Architect at Cisco, it was a journey shaped by adaptability, opportunity, and support from TechVets and Cisco's military-focused programs. Alex’s story offers inspiration and practical advice for service leavers considering a career in tech. A career in service Alex began his career in the Royal Air Force (RAF) as an electronics engineer, working on radar, satellite communications, and even early video conferencing systems. Over 22 years, he gained hands-on experience maintaining critical systems across the UK, Cyprus, and beyond. This technical foundation, combined with the military’s ethos of problem-solving and adaptability, prepared Alex for a seamless transition into cybersecurity. “My introduction to Cisco came early - maintaining video conferencing equipment before platforms like Zoom existed,” he explained. “It was fascinating to see how their technology enabled global connectivity.” The transition: Finding a new purpose Reaching the 22-year mark in his RAF career, Alex realised it was time for a new chapter. The COVID-19 pandemic underscored the appeal of remote work and a more stable home life. Encouraged by colleagues who had successfully transitioned, Alex explored opportunities in cybersecurity, leveraging resources like the Career Transition Partnership (CTP) and TechVets. A pivotal moment came when Alex attended a Cisco Military Insight Day organized through TechVets. “Cisco recognized the unique skills veterans bring: discipline, problem-solving, and adaptability. Their support was a game-changer for me,” he stated. Upskilling with Cisco Networking Academy One of the most valuable resources Alex accessed was the Cisco Networking Academy (NetAcad), offered free to TechVets members. Through NetAcad, veterans can learn in-demand skills like networking, cybersecurity, and Python programming, earning certifications like the CCNA. Alex explained further: “NetAcad gave me the technical knowledge I needed to complement my military experience. The courses are industry-relevant and provide a solid foundation, whether you’re starting from scratch or refining existing skills.” Life at Cisco: A culture of support Joining Cisco wasn’t just about landing a job - it was about finding a community. Alex quickly connected with Cisco’s Veterans Network, a group supporting ex-military employees and fostering camaraderie. “It feels like home,” he smiled. “From virtual meetups to in-person events, Cisco’s veterans community helps you stay connected. Whether you’re a former corporal or an officer, the shared mindset makes it easy to integrate.” Alex also highlighted the advantages veterans bring to the workplace, saying, “We approach tasks differently—whether it’s pride in getting the job done or taking the initiative to solve problems. These qualities resonate in a company like Cisco.” Advice for aspiring tech veterans For veterans considering a career in tech, Alex’s advice is simple: Leverage Free Resources: Programs like NetAcad and TechVets provide a gateway into tech roles, regardless of your technical background. Highlight Transferable Skills: Military experience equips you with problem-solving abilities and adaptability - qualities highly valued in tech. Network and Ask Questions: Connect with veterans on platforms like LinkedIn or attend military-focused career events to explore your options. “It’s not about having all the qualifications,” he stressed. “Willingness to learn and showing initiative go a long way.” Your next mission starts here Alex’s journey is a reminder that the transition to tech is not only possible but rewarding. For those ready to take the leap, Cisco and TechVets offer a robust support system to guide you every step of the way. Start your journey today with resources like the Cisco Networking Academy. Josh Kime – Navigating the Transition from Navy to Tech
Josh Kime’s career journey is an inspiring tale of determination, adaptability, and a passion for problem-solving. After three and a half years in the Royal Navy, Josh embarked on a new chapter, diving headfirst into the world of tech. His story is a testament to how skills learned in the military can be leveraged for success in civilian life, especially in the ever-evolving tech landscape. Early Days in the Navy Josh joined the Royal Navy in 2019 as a Hydrography and Meteorology (HM) Specialist, where he primarily focused on surveying the sea floor. With a background in marine biology and oceanography, this role aligned perfectly with his interests. He was stationed aboard the HMS Scott, where he conducted deep-sea surveying across the Atlantic. Despite the job's appeal, after a few years, Josh realised that the path he was on didn’t quite match his long-term career goals. The Decision to Leave Initially, Josh had aspirations of pursuing a commissioned officer role, but his interest waned after observing the limited hands-on work in hydrography that came with the officer path. This led him to consider his next steps outside of the Navy. After much reflection, he decided to explore opportunities in the civilian world, specifically in tech, where he could challenge himself intellectually and engage in continuous learning. Entering the Tech World Josh’s first exposure to the tech industry came through TechVets, a programme of the Forces Employment Charity that supports veterans transitioning into tech careers. He was directed to TechVets by his career advisors at the Careers Transition Partnership (CTP). He quickly signed up for courses in coding and cybersecurity, particularly Coursera’s "IT Automation with Python" and Immersive Labs courses in cybersecurity. For Josh, the coding and cybersecurity world was appealing because it presented a constant stream of new challenges, a key factor that fuelled his desire to upskill.

From Soldier to Software Developer: Adrian Montague’s Journey
Adrian Montague joined the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst (RMAS) in 2020 and commissioned into the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME). During his military career, he served with 8 Field Company (Para) in Colchester before becoming a Platoon Commander in Lyneham. Before joining the British Army, Adrian studied Mechanical Engineering at university. Although he enjoyed his time in the REME, he aspired to switch professions to design solutions using his engineering skills as a software developer. He began studying Python in the evenings and on weekends and worked with DT Squad during his resettlement. Unfortunately, no full-time positions were available when Adrian finished his service. In this podcast, Adrian shares the disappointment of his initial plan not working out and his resilience and determination to secure a job as a software developer. He revised his CV nearly eight times, used feedback from unsuccessful interviews to improve his confidence, learned to sell himself better, and translated his military experience into case studies that prospective employers could understand. He also continued to build his portfolio and skills by participating in and winning Inversity challenges and taking part in hackathons. Fast forward, and Adrian had two job offers on the table from BT and Smart DCS IT. In this podcast, he discusses his decision to join the smaller, agile company, Smart DCS IT, and why he chose it over BT. Adrian now has his feet well under the desk in his new role as a software developer with Smart DCS IT and has recently completed his AWS Cloud Practitioner course. Want to follow in Adrian’s footsteps? Get in touch with TechVets, and our team will guide you on the correct pathway to becoming a software developer via www.techvets.co
